Well considering I now have the model, thanks to the dedication of KJC, I have started texturing her. I haven't got a great deal done thus far, as due to the conversion process I had to split the mesh up into separate groups so I could texture her which took a fair few hours.

Well anyway I have started on the saucer as it seemed the best place to start and have started to get shield grid lines and a phaser array in. I am going by my own feel and will alter it later to match more what Hellkite is after.

Looks like a good start to me. Which mesh are you using out of interest?

The thing to remember is that she's a big beastie, so some textures should probably be smaller than you would otherwise normally do.

It's the low poly mesh, it's around 5k in poly's. The first one you sent me as I had already done considerable work to her before you sent me the mesh with the shaved 500 poly's off it. I have already partially reduced her in places and plan to do some more as I progress without compromising the quality of the model. To be totally honest I don't expect to get her much lower than say 4,500.

Yes that's already something I have come across with the escape pods I have just put on. My current plan of attack is to get the texture parts in, roughly where I want them, then after all that is done, I'll go back and tweak them so such things as windows, escape pods etc are the correct size for the size of the ship. :)

So the poly count roughly doubled in the transfer... that will probably cause a few issues with the high poly mesh (about 50k on my end)

EDIT - A lot of my poly reduction came from the indented areas, you need to double row them to maintain the sharp edged cutout post smoothing. So around the edges of the warp grills and bussard collectors, and around the hanger doors, bridge module, the saucer "wedges", anything like that will probably have polys that can be cut.

This'll be one to watch, can't wait to see what you can do with her Maj. Just remember the scope of the size and all the usual parts. Keep in mind that the windows should be generally smaller to show a massive ship.

Hello:
I might need to read or re-read this thread, but a 5k ship is not a common poly-count if intended for ingame, still, I guess it is a hero ship so it is not bad, in fact, at that count, I guess it has lots of interesting details that I am looking forward to see. I just hope you'll all try to keep the number of texture files to a minimum, because that also helps a lot for ingame (and renders).
Keep it up!

Off-Topic: Yay! for my post number 350 here :excited:.

Chilietrek, originally the ship was not intended to go into A2. The request to make a 3D version was made, and I agreed to build the mesh with the caveats that it would be built in maya and I didn't know how to texture. The final maya mesh came to about 50k polys. Majestic kindly volunteered to texture the ship if we could find a way to get it into MS3D. Exporting it in.obj format allowed Maj to use it. What he has is the base mesh (I build a base first, force the detail, then smooth) that in maya was around 2500 polys, but multiplied in the conversion.

As for going in game... well, if its in MS3D now, why not :D . She's a big beastie, and a one of its kind. So a higher than normal poly count shouldnt be too much of an issue (I hope...).

Hello:
Well, I may have misread then, or I may have ate a "0" since I read 5k and no 50k, me bad, lol.
When the model is fully done, maybe a low-poly version could be done, this page is full of great modellers and texturers and I bet they can make a low-poly version that will look great ingame. But I admit that since the big model is in ms3d, then I can imagine eye-candy pics been taken in A2 and/or FleetOps... and I surely look forward for that:thumbsup:.

Just to update, while I haven't done much this is still high on my to-do list. I have however been taking a break from modelling and such. I will get back to this when motivation reasserts itself once again. :)

I have been working on it a little, adding some details and what not. Not enough progress to show off yet. But there is development happening. I have actually kind of taught myself some new tricks recently with the BSG textures so I'll probably be going back and re-vamping much of what I have already done.

Due to the conversion process I have been forced to completely pull the mesh apart which has slowed down my work on it. It's still on my to-do list and plan after I finish my current ships that I am working on to get the bugger textured. :)

Just a note that I have done some work on this today, coordinating much of the model to the blank texture. This model will unfortunately not to be to my usual standards, due to the extreme difficultly of the mesh and getting all the correct sides so there will be texture stretch in places. I have ripped it apart as much as I can, it was due to the exporting process (from Sketch-up to MS3D) that made this so difficult.

Thanks I plan to have it complete before my wedding, so I have put a time frame on this one, something I don't normally do.
