Nice low poly Cygnus, looks to be around the 1000 mark. Yeah nice idea about brining it to the more modern standards, something I also plan to do myself when I get back on the BSG band wagon.

Thank you:). The ship has, in fact, 1561 polies... but that is because you have not seen the ship's belly yet and the bow guns are very detailed so I think the count is still very good.

Yeah, looks delicious!

Thank you:excited:, and wait to see how it will look when finished.

Hello:
And thank you Jetfreak, I hope I can get a nice result when the model is done.

But for the Cygnus to be completed, it needs turrets. Right now I have a complete mesh of the turrets big Battlestars have (Galactica, Pegasus), and since this is the Mark2 Cygnus, it will be using Pegasus style turrets and also some Valkyrie style smaller guns for defense (so it has less anti-capital ship than the MK1, but way better anti-fighter capabilities).

I hope you'll like the turret, it is the big one for pics or for when there are only a few of them on screen I guess, but it has 190 polies (19% of the polies Coxxon's turrets have) so Ithink that can help.

tonight I will start texturing it so it can be used with my other models... and also the version for older Battlestars with a cockpit. Thanks to the canon references they have somewhat different detailing, so Iam hoping I can get as much as I can of those :).

Hello:
And thank you Jetfreak .

I have a little update. Since I have been a bit busy I was unable to finish the model of the Cygnus, but at least I got the turrets done and placed.

Here are two pics of the WIP so far. What do you all think?

Oh, oh! there you go, now its perfect! I wonder if Maj would allow me to add turrets to his models for FO... Nah, I think I"ll keep a lower poly mod and then maybe a high poly mod expansion with your models. That would be cool.

Hello:

Thank you :) . As for poly counts:
1561
2437 (with Light Turrets)
5069 (with Heavy turrets)

I have mentioned this is the MK2 Cygnus, to accompany ships of the time of the Pegasus and Valkyrie, so the armament is different than the MK1. This model I made has 12 heavy KEW turrets and 10 light turrets of the Valkyrie class (the smaller of the two designs of turrets the ship has).

:Y I love it! The turrets give it such an extra bit of coolness lol, really great work Chile :)

Thank you very much Dan :) . I like the turrets too, and I tried to be very careful to place them as closely as the design say they are. And the turrets are 100% mine, mesh and texture.

Thank you, and well, it is your mod so you can decide what is best for it. Whatever you decide, I know you'll do a great job ;).

Thank you :).

Backstep would be real proud man, Cygnus really looks the part!

Thank you Jetfreak, I will send him pics of the finished model to Backstep and Ice-Dragon, I really hope they'll like my low-poly model :) .

And yes, I just finished it, so since this post is a bit too large, I'll just post a teaser. More pics in my next post :).

Now I need a little word of advice here, the Cygnus is 700 meters lenght (40 meters shorter than the Valkyrie) but it has Pegasus style turrets. So I am unsure if this ship is a Strikestar or maybe a Gunstar. What do you all think?

It really all depends on the role that you want it to have. It's it more aimed towards capital ship combat or fighter screening?

I see Gunstars as support vessels for larger Battlestars and Strikestars as mini battlestars that just don't have the fighter capability but can engage enemy capital ships.

In my new BSG mod I have done away with all those different titles except for Battlestar and Gunstar.

Hello:
I got from my files something Backstep said: "this is my original design of a Colonial Defender... it is meant to be a support ship to accompany battlestars in groups of 4 or less, the Cygnus Defender carrys a small detachment of Raptors, and has no vipers."

I was thinking in Gunstar because, like a gunship, this ship is small compared to the battleships but still has quite the punch, and I see the Cygnus to be anti-capital while Valkyrie's cannons are more into screening against enemy fighters as main role but still been able to attack capital ships. So I imagine those two ships would complement each other.

I also thought of Strikestar because it sounds cool :) .

I think Gunstar sounds good for the very reasons you mention. Plus I could see a Battlestar group having a large Battlestar as it's lead (Mercury cass for example) one or two smaller Battlestars like the Valkyrie and then at least 3 or 4 Gunstars for support.

Or alternatively a single Battlestar (would have to be a larger one as the Valkyrie wouldn't cut it in my opinion) and two Gunstars used for escort and support roles.

Hello:
I agree that Valkyries are better working as part of a group, but they are still Battlestars so maybe they can have a flag-like role depending on the circumstances.

But it sounds better that a ship like a Mercury class can take the role of flagship, with some Valkyries and Cygnus escorting. That sounds like the best, and since Cygnus are not battlestars, but they have quite the punch then gunstar sounds like the best choice for a classification right now  .

LOL this is EXACTLY how my battlegroup setup is in my mod. You hacked my desktop didn't you? :naughty:

I agree in my version, I have the Vigilant/Guardian Gunstars as heavy ordiance escorts, used to hit the enemy where it hurts. The Defender class ones as more as a anti-fighter screening vessel, hence the hangar pod, as it can hold a small amount of fighters and I see the Cygnus as a combination of the two, as a middle ground, good at both roles, but doesn't specialise in either. Jack of all trades kind of vessel.

Hello:
Well, it seems Adm_Z discovered one Cylon Sleeper Agent, right Majestic? ;).

But that setup is good indeed, we can all indeed imagine that happening in the series and in the game .

lol, yeah, My baseline unit is the valkyrie. You build about 2-3 of them and then 3 cygnus's and later on you get acess to the advanced shipyard which builds the mercury. A full fleet can either have a mix of 5 valkyries and 3 cygnus's or 3 Valkyries, 3 cygnus's and 1 mercury. Once you reach double gold rank, the ship doesn't count for the cap.:)

Oh, and I have just screened my datafiles, backed up and am getting ready to send my laptop in to the shop, so if you planted something there, it is either gone, or the guys at the shop can deal with it.:p

Hello:
Those sound like good ideas for a Colonial fleet, but don't you think we are forgetting a ship? a canon ship that appeared in Razor and was originally made as a possible Galactica redesign many years ago.

Yep, I am referring to the Berzerk class Escort :) . 1198 polies with no turrets and 2958 with all turrets (10 mid-sized ones and 10 small-sized ones).

What do you all think?

??

Indeed, that is one canon vessel the community is severely lacking at the moment. The only one available is.... inaccurate, to say the least.

Looks very good Chile!

I used MaP's version and orthos pics of the ship's designer as references to build mine. It might not be perfect, but I think it might be close enough (I hope :) ).

Of the three ships, Berzerk is the biggest, with 842 meters lenght, compared with the 740 meters of the Valkyrie and the 700 of the Cygnus.

I am very happy that you liked my ship :excited:.

If that is the case, why is it an escort? If it's larger than a Valkyrie and has roughly similar firepower, it's a full-blown strikestar (or whutever you'd like to call it).
