Hello:
I did some tests today and guess what: We can have mobile research labs in stock A2! :excited::excited:.

Now, I think it is thanks to the FO Patch (same that allows for Unimatrix-style bases, replace weapons, ...) but we can now have research ships... I still have to test actual research but this is still so awesome :plan:.

Dawnstar class?
That's what I thought. If it were a bit more bulky, it would come pretty close. Though I guess that would be more like matching the Galaxy rather than the Connie.

That's easier said than done.
Yeah... I picked up Civilization: Beyond Earth, the Deus Ex series, Fable Anniversary, and RWBY Grimm Eclipse.

Let me know how Fable Anniversary is for the computer. Been mulling that purchase for a couple of years.

It's always fun to find that someone who did voice acting for some Star Trek games also appeared in Star Trek somewhere else. Iris Bahr, who voiced Telsia in EF 1 and 2 also voiced Sirta D'Qua in Away Team, played the cadet in "Endgame" who asked Janeway about Seven. She apparently also did some voice work for Armada II, but I can't seem to figure out which units she did voices for

I might have just answered my own question. It seems she voices, at the very least, the Federation colony ship. I've found a few others, like Martha Hackett voicing the Klingon BOP, Vaughn Armstrong voicing the Fed cargo ship, and Jonathan Del Arco voicing the Fed frigate. Apparently the women who played Miral paris and Alyssa Ogawa also did voice work for Armada II, except I can't figure out what they did.

Still 32-bit and using DirectX 9.0c. The underlying game is still very much Fable 1 with The Lost Chapters, with the original mechanics, audio, and animations intact, despite the move to a different engine. I was hoping they introduced the Fable 2 real estate system, but it's still the same as the old Fable 1 version.

Despite all this, the UI has been given a massive overhaul. The HUD is still about the same, including the ability to access your inventory without pausing, but the menus are very different. I'm not entirely sure what I think about it. Here's a screenshot I found to give you an idea.
1384489127-6.jpg

I navigated the main menu a bit with a mouse, but it's very clear that you're supposed to use a controller for everything, so that's what I did. There is a new alternate controller scheme in addition to the classic one; the new one is the default. The new controller scheme is almost like the one used in Fable 2 and 3 with melee on X, ranged on Y, magic on B, and run and interact on A. I generally like it, though there is the occasional oddity, like puting your weapon away with LB. Unfortunately, with the new scheme you are limited to one available spell at a time. If you hold down RT, you can switch your spell with B, but you won't have additional spells on X and Y like in classic. That may put Will heavy characters at a disadvantage.

As far as I can tell, there are exactly two changes to the gameplay itself: the old Hero Save system has been removed in favor of simply letting you save during a quest (meaning Bargate Prison shouldn't be nearly so bad now) and a new difficulty level has been added. The new difficulty level removes Resurrection Phials and makes enemies tougher. I haven't tried it, so I'm not sure exactly in what way they're more challenging, but they're supposed to be more dangerous, somehow.

There's official mod support, including a very small amount of content on the Steam Workshop. I highly recommend getting the FXAA Remover. FXAA hurts my framerate, doesn't look as good as real MSAA or MFAA, and the Nvidia control panel couldn't even properly disable it in FA.

There are also two DLCs with new armor and weapons. I didn't buy them so I'm not sure how you acquire these items, but it looks like one includes things like the clothes and weapons that other characters use and the other mostly has odds and ends, like lute and dead fish melee weapons. They are also on sale at the same discount as the main game, 85% off.

Lastly, there's the graphics. The game looks much better than the original, with higher poly models, HD textures, normal mapping, and new shaders. It also supports whatever resolution you want. I'm running it at 1920x1200. Retaining the old animations looks kind of odd, but it's a huge improvement, overall.

It's only $5.24 (USD) on Steam right now so if you're ever going to get it, now is the time.

... Wow, there is so much cool stuff on sale. I'm having trouble deciding what I want. Also, I kind of haven't bought a new computer game since... uh, about 2009, I think. So I'm kind of out of the loop on what's really good. Any special recommendations on what to grab?

What kind of games do you like?

If you like sandbox RPGs, then Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are both good series. I can also help you pick a particular one of these depending on your personal preferences.

If character/story-centric RPGs are more your thing, then Mass Effect is a must have.

The entire Civilization series is on sale if you're a 4x fan. 5 and Beyond Earth were pretty controversial, but I actually like them quite a lot. BE is also essentially Alpha Centauri 2 so that's pretty cool.

Bioshock is an excellent shooter series in the vein of Half-Life. 1, the Burial at Sea DLCs for Infinite, and, to a lesser extent, 2, also have some survival-horror flavor.

The new Tomb Raider games (the 2013 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider) and the Uncharted series are solid adventure-platformer types with gorgeous scenery.

Mirror's Edge is a first-person action-platformer with an incredibly robust free-running/parkour system. There's an emphasis on getting up to and maintaining a high speed while engaging in minimal combat, like the early Sonic games. The original is short and is basically a tech demo or proof of concept, like the first Portal, but Catalyst is a complete game, also like Portal. Catalyst is also a reboot so you don't need to have played the first one. Didn't bring back Rhianna Pratchett as the writer, though. Don't get them if you're susceptible to motion sickness, though. And maybe if you're afraid of heights.

The new Doom is supposed to be a spectacular retro-FPS with a run-and-gun play-style.

Life is Strange is an interesting narrative-centric game with an emphasis on choice. Time travel is both a major story element and a primary mechanic. It also gets much darker around the mid-point.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising is not actually on sale, but it came out in 2001 so it's cheap. It's an action-strategy game, a genre so small that Hostile Waters makes up a third of it. The other two thirds are Carrier Command and Carrier Command: Gaea Mission. Features writing by Warren Ellis and narration by Tom Baker, AKA the Fourth Doctor. Need to disable the automatically-enabled compatibility settings to get a decent frame rate, though. They're not necessary, anyway. Also, stick to 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions since the game is V- and tends to clip the UI off in 16:9 and 16:10.

Wow! That's a lot of great advice, thanks a ton! :worship:

I fondly remember playing Daggerfall (not when it came out, though - I'm not that old!), so that series sounds right up my alley. Should I just go for the most recent one, or do you recommend one in particular?

Oh yes, the Civ games are pretty neat. I played Civ3 a lot, good times. I'll look into these.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the series. Do you happen to know if the older games still work on Win10? My XP system is slowly dying and I don't want to have to rely on it...

I'll check out the rest of your suggestions, too!

No problem!:)

Well, TES games kind of vary.

3, Morrowind, has a slow pace with mechanics often based on percentages. Chance to hit, chance to pick the lock, chance of spell failure, and so on. The game world is entirely hand crafted and features non-respawning named bandits, hand placed loot, and a relatively small amount of random loot. The landscape is very alien and the local Dunmer/Dark Elf population has a very well developed and odd culture. The only game where the Fighters Guild, for instance, is a job first and plot second (there is a story line that's tied to several other factions, but it's not in-your-face like the other games). This is the one that showcases the lore the best. However, many people hate the 'dice-roll' combat, the draw distance has not aged well (though MGE can fix this), there's not much content for high-level characters, and it doesn't have a compass to lead you to your objectives, instead relying on directions given by NPCs which aren't always clear. It's also the most crash prone. If you get this one, be sure to get both the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions since they fix the journal and add some nice content for high-level characters. You'll also want a Tribunal delay mod since it's supposed to happen after the main quest.

4, Oblivion, removed the vast majority of the random chance stuff and replaced it with things like always hitting in melee and a lockpicking minigame. The world was procedurally generated, then touched up by hand. The hyperlinked text dialog was replaced with fully voiced dialog, though there is less of it. Dungeons are huge and filled with semi-random enemies with semi-random loot and equipment. The most common criticisms of Oblivion are its art direction, over-reliance on level-scaling, questionable writing for the Guild plot-lines, and not featuring much lore while also contradicting more of the previously established lore than any other game. Probably the most controversial and very much a love-it-or-hate-it game. If you get this one, the Shivering Isles expansion is actually my favorite part of the game.

5, Skyrim, scrapped the old magic system and built an entirely new one. Along with the new magic system comes a new weapon/spell equip system that allows you to choose which hand you want something in. For instance, I like to play with a sword in my right hand and a spell in my left. You can also use two weapons or spells or a shield with a weapon or spell. Attributes (strength, endurance, etc.) have been removed in favor of perks and choosing whether you want to increase health, magicka, or stamina at level up. Easily the most stable game. Usually criticized for the very short faction quest-lines, lack of alternative ways to complete quests, and removal of several existing mechanics, including NPC disposition, gear degradation, several spell effects, and attributes. If you get this, the Dawnguard expansion adds new factions and overhauls vampires and werewolves, Dragonborn adds a new landmass with plenty of content, and Hearthfire lets you build a home from scratch. Also, if you have the game and all expansions on Steam by October 28th of this year, you will get Skyrim: Special Edition for free. SE features a 64-bit exe, new graphics, and includes all the expansions. We'll know more about it in a few months.

If you get any of these, be sure to get the Unofficial Patch for the game. I really can't stress that enough. DLCs also feature their own unofficial patches.

Oh yes, the Civ games are pretty neat. I played Civ3 a lot, good times. I'll look into these.
I think 3 was what I started with. The biggest change that Civ5 made was that they removed most of the unit-stacking mechanics. After playing against Russia in 4 and their super-stacks, I can see why. Combat has been appropriately overhauled to make up for it.

If you get Civ5, be sure to pick up the Complete bundle. The expansions have some nice improvements and the cost of buying the game, the expansions, and all the DLC individually is around $100 USD. Complete is currently at $12.27.

For BE, the linear tech-tree was replaced with a radial tech-web that you're free to explore in whatever direction you like. Late-game factions might share just a small portion of their tech. The affinity system is also pretty interesting. It's basically your philosophy to life on this planet. Purity is about retaining Earth culture and the original human genome, Harmony is about going native to an extreme and using genetic engineering to adapt to the planet, and Supremacy is about technological superiority and cybernetic-based trans-humanism. You also get to customize your faction. Just a few options when the game starts and more as it goes on. The expansion replaced the diplomacy system. It has some interesting features, but it still needs some work, in my opinion. I haven't played without the expansion so I'm not sure what else it changed.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the series. Do you happen to know if the older games still work on Win10? My XP system is slowly dying and I don't want to have to rely on it...
I have had no issues getting 1 and 2 to work on my Win10 system. I installed them and they worked right out of the... well not box, but you know what I mean. They have widescreen support, too.

So, apparently Apple is renaming OS X to macOS. I'm not sure if this is a good way to refresh the brand in the public consciousness or as dumb as renaming Logitech to Logi. Thoughts?

That's just corporate craziness... For the last few years we've got some awkward rebrands like XBox One, Office 365 and Adobe Animate. The list goes on.

So I caved and bought one last thing in the Summer Sale: Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity. I keep hearing it's good. I suppose I'll find out when the download finishes.

Apparently, this Alex Wollas fellow has been proliferating my custom HAWX skins into GTA without my permission or credit...

Shamless rip:

I'm not really sure what to make of it. I mean, the damage has already been done an he's ripped a fair bit more too. Too little too late I guess, "Grand Theft Aircraft" is ironic haha.

Will given that you hosted on deviant art so you hold the © Copyright on it Jetfreak
in fact it listed as " ©2013-2016 Jetfreak-7 "
I saw a button to report stolen content. If the folks at that website handle this like we used to at FF, there's a good chance to get it removed.

In unrelated news, Steam summer sale is now over. I showed some real self-control and only bought things I was likely to play - which, given the fact that I don't really game a lot, turned out to be very few. Nevertheless, I'm happy with my new games, and I hope you folks are, too! Perhaps it's time to start a thread to organize some sweet MSFCian multiplayer gaming.

No problem! What did you wind up getting?

Unrelatedly, my wireless mouse seems to be dying. It's started becoming randomly unresponsive, skipping across the screen instead of gliding across, and changing batteries, switching to the other OS, and switching to the laptop don't prevent the issue. To be fair, I only paid $15 for it and that was a couple years ago. I wound up ordering one of these. More buttons and a cable. I guess I'll see how it turns out.

I grabbed Civ5 Complete and Bioshock 1. The latter one I have already finished, but will probably play a few times over again in the next days. It was huge fun, and the setting and story are simply awesome. I'm probably going to pick up the sequels next time.
I was going to pick up Skyrim, but decided to wait for the next sale. I already have a considerable non-game backlog of stuff to do, due to my massive workload the last months, and having a TES game to play through would NOT help with that, lol.

EDIT: Oh, and I sent you a friend request on steam. My account there has the same avatar as here so I'm easy to recognize. :)

Those are good choices. You might try looking for the Bioshock Triple Pack Bundle during the next sale. Since you already have 1, you should get the cost discounted from the bundle, getting you 2 and Infinite at a discount.
