• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

That is amazing modelling work, I really like the station. It reminds be vaguely of Halo, an old and incomplete unusual looking structure.

I love it.

Also have you complete a Fleet Ops version of the mod? Even an incomplete beta or alpha? I am asking as I can only find the stock A2 version and I really looking forward to playing the FO version. :)

Aye there's a beta out with the first two playable races: Sigma Beta 1 Mod Download, Star Trek: Armada 2 Mods and some maps with NPC races flying around. I should have the other (probably unbalanced) races out in a patch by December if all goes well.

Are you waiting for 3.1.4?

I tend to keep most of my models under 2000 polys, though i think the purple creature I made is about 6000. I'll have to double check as soon as I get back to my comp with 3DS. Knowing my luck it's a bajillion polys

To me everything can range up to 5000 polies in general, 12000 for limited units.

Indeed, 3.1.4 has a lot of helpful features that will solve quite a few issues. Notably the multiple cocoons, that way I can get rid of the frustrating Refit method the V.R.A. has that everyone hates. I also really need some of the dev tools they have like the ones that automatically make damage values in odf's. There's just too many odf's in Sigma to manually input every single damage value :cry2:

yeah... I will hopefully release 1.0 of my mod after adapting it to 3.1.4. It will fix a ton of problems I am currently having.

And if the devs were to share, I doubt there would be many more things to mod as it would make it so easy, mods would be spit out every week.:lol2:

It's best to keep poly counts down, have them as low as possible. A good modeller can make a low poly ship look almost as good as a high poly ship. Would you believe it if I said I have never personally modelled a model over 3k?

I think TUN is on the right track keeping his models down in poly size, it makes me like Sigma even more, as I am a low poly specialist. :)

Sadly almost all of Optec's balancing and ODF making tools are tied into an 'AI program' he wrote - and unless you are skilled in C++ and Delphi... you're gonna have real trouble getting it to spit out the proper values  . He wants to separate those tools out from the AI so that you don't require 10 years of learning to get them right :lol2:

Right now the best thing would be if somebody could keep working on RCIX's LUA beast as well as the other quite neat ODF maker tools on FileFront, so that they can be continually upgraded for 3.1.3+

What Dominus said.

I might just release all the playable races soon in the meantime then, though until those dev tools come out they will just be far too unbalanced for multiplayer.

My feelings exactly - it's just going to be too hard I fear to balance something with that much complexity (i.e. so many units and passives!) without becoming a slave to the machine :cry2:

Hey... TUN... listen.. uh. I have been playing the demo. And I only want to ask. With regards to economy, will it be less topsy turvy in the first complete version. One race I need 2-3x ore moons than money moons, and the other is the vice versa. I was just wishing to know that the economy kinks will be worked out.

Aye, I originally planned for the Zevs to have more need for Gold and the V.R.A. more need for Ore, but as you said the economy does feel topsy turvy. I might still keep the mentality that each race needs more of one resource, though the cost difference probably won't be as dramatic.

Hello:
About poly-counts, it is nice if you can keep them as low as you can, but I admit that there are designs that are too tricky to keep them as low as we wish.

Sigma looks superb, I suppose it really dominates the map it is included and that must make for a breathtaking sight.

Keep it up!.

An aspect of Sigma that I am planning is cinematics. Unlike ship models... sadly it takes me an eternity to make organic animated models. My first cinematic model has taken me weeks to get done, and I've not even rigged it yet. Here's some progress of my first model for cinematics:

Might recognize her from my icon. I think I might have made her a bit too creepy...

Looks fantastic! Really well done. Can't wait to see what you come up with next. Sigma is quickly becoming my favorite WIP around here, haven't been that excited about a mod since AOW.

Hmm... looks real nice. I can only imagine how much the Cinematics would take up your time and resources. But don't let that stop you. You're doing great.

I agree. Of course I don't know how much you have planned. But doing full cinematics for your campaign may take a whole lot of time. I only hope you can bring this project as far as you want. :)

Indeed they will take up a bit of time, fortunately though they are my assignments for my classes so I thought I might as well take out ten birds with one stone. I'm kinda of stuck moving forward until the next FO patch comes out though, so I guess this will keep me busy in the meantime.

heh, thats why I've been experimenting with textures recently. Trying to pass the time until all my bugs can be fixed. After days and days of searching my install for the mysterious sound related bug, I find out I wasn't the one who made an error.

but this next patch is sure to make a lot of people's days, including mine with the bug fixed and the comprehensive defense weapon. Well worth the wait if you ask me.

Thanks a bunch everyone.

I have a playable demo for the last three races up and ready, though I'm a bit wary for posting links to other websites for the download... is it alright if I give a link to Megaupload and A2 files?

You can give a link to MegaUpload and if you like Terra or I can download it and then upload it to MSFC.

Awesome, I'll just link it to megaupload for now and then host a more polished release here on MSFC.

So one would only need to download the version released here rather than the previous beta's and patches?

That's the idea, mainly to save filespace and whatnot since I'll delete patches from megaupload when a new one is ready. Right now the newest release is really unpolished, I played some multiplayer matches today and the balance is reeeeeally bad at the moment. It's more of a showcase to give players an idea of how the last three races will play I suppose.

Some more screenshots of a few games I played. Dominus and I have been doing multiplayer lately and some pretty insane stuff has been happening.
