• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

So, spawning from this thread, MSFC I thought I would show pics of my attempts at getting ships to look more like FO ships. i know its not everyones cup of tea, and I'm not even sure it is mine. It is just another style, and i figured it would be fun to see what I could do. Here are some shots of what I have done so far.:)

the flourish actually ended up looking like the original textures.

Yeah, the Feds for FO have inherently grey textures. Funny thing is, I actually lighten them for my personal build :lol2: It's nice work having them match. They look armored now.

I'd also suggest registry removals too.

 that is actually a good idea. Too bad it is a little beyond my abilitys at this point. I am experimenting though, hopefully I'll figure it out some time.

ok, so someone suggested that I get rid of those black triangles off the main hull of the Acuiescent. I said it was beyond my ability's, but apparently I don't know what my ability's are.

Sufficed to say, it turned out pretty well, and I am curious what y'all think.

In addition, I tried my hand at the Interceptor class, and the Achilles. They didn't look much different...

Good texture adjustments are more art than science. With lots of retries involved. This isn't a bad start. The details are crisp and the colors are even. One of the things I do when removing registries from textures is to first 'supersize' the texture in question. I resize it by as much as 300%. I then use a brush size of not more than 5 or 6 pixels in width and height to paint over the registry. Doing things this way, I am only affecting a very small portion of the texture at one time. When I am done, I return the texture to its original size. Any shading errors or mistakes I've made are canceled out by the reversion to the 'normal' size.

I liked the triangles; I thought they added character. They probably could have used some more detail, though. Either way, you did a pretty good job.

Yeah, I took it as more of a challenge then anything. I liked them too. Mal and Dom didn't.:p I was just surprised at how seamlessly they dispersed.

Not bad there, those lines seem to a bit heavy on the Achilles though. Must be why I was never too fond of bump maps.

Personally, I liked the random triangles on the Flourish myself , adds some uniqueness to a future ship.

The clone tool is your friend here. I usually clone a empty areas and duplicate it over the registry. I recently did this with a Cardassian texture, removing the Cardassian logo from it.

It works rather well especially if there are lines on the model. Most models these days however don't come with registries as most don't like them except for hero units.

Yeah, those I need to re-do. I don't like how they turned out. I liked the triangles too, but like I said, somebody wanted to see what it would look like without them. they said it made it too dark or something.

As to the registries, thanks for the info guys, I think I"ll try those techniques on the textures.

I smell a perfect modding guide tutorial coming up :yum:

In any case, I think that latest pic looks pretty good, although the lines as Jetfreak said still seem a bit heavy to me

Nice Vacuum cleaner. :lol2:

I never have liked the heavy bump maps that FO uses, it's just my personal taste. However for the goal you are aiming at you're doing well Zaxxon.

Heh, maybe.

Looks good. Just need to add some red glows it looks like.

There are actually red glows there. They are just kinda hard to see in those shots.

And thanks Maj. I am not sure either, but it is a style as I said, and thats all I'm trying to mimic. Certain parts are too dark, as was stated, but I'm still learning.:)

Here is a redo of the Achilles. i think its better than the last. Also, there is a comparison of the textures on the Aquiescent class, or what ever you want to call it.

Those are some fine tough little ships. :p

Improvement is clearly showing there, they'd fit in quite nicely. Also never try overdoing the edits. Sometimes too much detail ruins a model's clean lines.

Thanks, and yeah, things can easily go over the line of good to over done. Sofar, its not too bad, but the good thing as i can always start from scratch as I am not doing any serious edits.

Thanks man. Here is yet another attempt at the Interceptor. I really liked that origional texture on it. I'm not sure how I can change it at all without making it look terrible.

more to come.

OK, tried again, and It looks better. I toned down the bumpmap and redid the shading. I think I am gonna leave it as is. Not as dark as I would like, but I think that it will be over done if I make it too much darker.:)

That came out pretty nicely - crisp clear lines, and a nice match for FO-type textures I think

Tried the EVO again, and I think this time it actually looks like a FO texture a lot, minus the bumpmapping of course. :) I'm very happy with the way this one came out.

That looks sweet, nicely done. I wasn't a huge fan of the white. TOS and TMP yeah sure but not TNG era. You've done well.

Thanks Maj, it means alot. I think I've finally figured out the formula to get them the same look as those in FO. Here is my latest attempt at the achilles. The best so far I think.(for the Achilles at least.)

I think I might apply this new technique on the Aquiescent, just to see what it will look like.
