Thought, yes :D
It's the old saying measure twice cut once. I keep looking at the pictures and try to envisage the most efficient way of building the mesh.
Unfortunately, the British weather has uncharacteristically given me a couple of good weekends to do the gardening... so I haven't had much time to build.

Thankyou.
But it's been more than just the keel!

I'm shocked at how quick this is progressing.

Thing to note, whilst this is just a frigate I suspect that the poly count will be a tad high for spamming. I suspect that she'll be in the 2000poly mark by the time she's done., although there are some elements I could remove if necessary. (The conversion doubles the maya count, so the above would be 1756 in milkshape if my math is right)

I've taken a few liberties on the nacelles as I felt the rectangular look didn't fit. They are an irregular octogan in crossection, triple bussard collectors and two grills. Hope you don't mind.

Bigest problem at the moment is the "bat tail" on the underside of secondary hull. I may have to drop the idea completely and revert back to a conventional finish unless I have a sudden burst of inspiration.

Update, I managed to cut the lawn back a bit :lol2:

oh, and I also did a bit more on the ship.
Peredhil_020711a.PNGPeredhil_020711b.PNG

Apologies for the double post, I've hit a slight snag.

Somewhere along the line I've accidently duplicated the mesh and fused the two together. This is the source for a few difficulties I've been having. What this means is I'm having to go over the mesh and delete a layer of polys one at a time (I don't want to delete both layers!).

Now for the glass half full types, this is actually a blessing in disguise as it means the poly count has been effectively doubled (I had thought the design looked a tad rough for such a high count), which means I should be able to get in more physical detail without making it A2 prohibative.

The Carpenter shipyards apologies for the inconvenience and promises a 10% reduction on the next vessel constructed.

EDIT - down to 610 faces (1220 Milkshape polys)

As I now seem to have polys to spare (new count 1380), I rounded off the hull a little and built the impulse engines and tricobalt launchers into the mesh.

Next up is a bit of smoothing on the secondary hull. I've gone for a more conventional configuration.

You know Hellkite, the 2D images just don't do this design justice. I wasn't originally a fan, but having spent time working on the detail I've come to realise she's a remarkable little ship.

Revisions to make the hull flow a little better and look a little smoother. I think I'm at the limit of what I can do here.

Peredhil_020711h.PNG

Count is 796faces / ~1592 polys.

Hellkite -> KJC -> Maj -> Jet ->-Maj -> Jet -> Download kitten

I thought Terra was the Upload Kitteh, not the Download Kitten. Am I on the wrong forum?

I would personally add more poly's to the saucer and nacelles. Considering the poly size of the Seraphim, I think a higher poly version of this design wouldn't hurt. Maybe get it to 3k thats about half of it's bigger sister.

Also are you using Sketckup to build this? If you are I think I can convert from that format now.

I agree with Majestic, a little more smoothing of the hull wouldn't hurt. That said, the progress has been really great.

I'll take another look att he primary hull. I've been trying to keep the count down because she's a frigate, and my little hiccup hasn't helped matters (I'd have added more smoothing as I went alolng if I hadn't though the count so high).

As with all my meshes, this has been done in Maya 5. The propriatry formats are .mb and .ma (maya binary and ascii). Direct conversion may not be a simple process as the developers changed the format in a later version (mb is incompatable and I have to go into the ma text and change headers to make it work). As before, I convert to .obj for sending.

Smoothing is always a good thing :)

Kjc you have done a remarkable job on her the only thing that I would add is the tricobolt launcher's turret Bump on the bow.

Other than that I'm more than pleased with it It a truly remarkable bit of work you have done

I actually moved that up and integrated into the forward hull. If you look at my last pic you can see it in the fork.

I see but that is were I stuck the sectary defector dish

Yes I like redundancy it a Military thing" :lol2:

But The tricobalt warhead is a long range subspace weapon whose high-yield detonations can tear holes in subspace. Tricobalt devices are not a standard armament of Federation vessels and yields are calculated in Tera-Cochranes, indicating that its mechanism is somewhat similar to the general reaction in a warp field.

I would not want that lock on forward very limited firing ark

My reason is the ship would have to turn and face it target given away that see and has a lock on the cloaked ship
