Future of mankind Spacecraft
Contest Ends on Monday - 1st of September, 2008.
[fieldset=Introduction]
Welcome everyone to the first MSFC modeling contest.
We are proudly launching the first ever modeling contest here on MSFC. We would like to thank all the people that have taken an active interest in this contest. None of this would matter with you.
Now to the contest.
The contest is simple, All participants will be making a 3D rendered model using the render software of their choice. The entries will be judged by our panel of Judges on a variety of factors to make it all fair.
Here's a little concept story of the basis of the modeling contest. This is 150 years into the future.
It is the Year 2158. Mankind has finally achieved FTL space travel. This is the first spacecraft to ever be able to reach another star system in a "short" period of time. This ship is the pinnacle of modern man's technological achievements.
Now about the requirements of the contest.
Each modeler is to make their own version of what mankind's first FTL (Faster-Than-Light) capable ship would look like. You may be "influenced" by what you have seen on T.V. or Movies, but this has to be an Original design.
Now, to make it all fair, there is a 10,000 polygon limit.
All models must be submitted to MSFC for verification once complete.
There is a 7 week time limit for all entries.
And finally, all models will be hosted for access by all members once the contest is over.

[fieldset=Rules]
Rules of the contest
Rule #1.) Have fun and Enjoy yourself. We don't want people to not have fun with something like this.Rule #2.) No cheating! Cheating is classified as 2 ways. Using another Artist's work and claiming as your own. Or attempting to have someone else model for you. Also in this rule falls any "attempts" to bribe the judges.
Rule #3.) Proper Permissions and Credits must be given to any materials used for textures that are not made by you.
Rule #4.) Do not Hassle or harass the Judges or the modelers.

[fieldset=Judging]
Here are the Judges and the guidelines for judging.
The Judges are as follows:
Hellkite
Cyberash
Knight
Now on to the processes of what they will be judging each model.
First off, the contest will be based on a 10.0 point "half" system. This means that there is a decimal system in play.
A model could receive a total of 10.0, 9.5, or as low as a 5.5.
It's up to the judges. They will post an explanation of their vote, as to "why" they gave this model a score of X.X.
Here is the rating system and what each factor is worth up to in points.
Model Design:
2 points
The rating here is to be decided on based on how clean and how solidly built the model is. Any noticable open holes, and smudging, smearing, or other noticable defects in the model and overall look and feel of the model.
Originality:
3 points
This is simple. The more original the design is, the higher the score rating here will be. If it's based on Star Trek, Star Wars, B5, Stargate, etc, it will get the lowest score possible. Note, basing it on current real human tech is not a negative. Current real tech is original. As long as it's not the Apollo craft, or something that NASA is currently testing. After all, this is about a craft 150 years into our future, and is FTL capable. So this means strapping a couple warp nacelles on the NASA Spaceshuttle will get the lowest possible score here, same as the NX-01 Enterprise.
Poly count:
2 points
Here is where polys really count. If the Polys are too high or too low, then it will show, and effect your score. Remember, a max of 10,000 polygons are allowed on the model. The only exception to this is if you make a Diorama with a couple models. But again, this is limited to a max of 10k per model with a max of 30,000 total for a Diorama. A Diorama is a "Scene". This can include something like a hanger with a rocket plane and a bunch of things to make it look like a scene out of a movie or game or something. But if you submit such, the primary model will be the object of scrutiny.
Plausibility:
2 points
This here is about "How real it could be. Is there a major basis for your model in real science? The closer to real "it could be", the higher this score will be.
Textures:
1 points
This area of the ratings is a bit of an issue. Some modelers are not fully skilled in texturing. However, Textures are part of modeling. So, to make it fair, and encourage texturing your entry, you can earn a half or full point here. So, without a texture, a model has a maximum high score of a 9.0. But, add a texture, and you can earn a full 10.0 max score. As for the ratings, if it is textured poorly to fair, it will get a half point. If the Textures were well made and thought out and fit the model, making it a great model, then a full point will be awarded.

Now, the final order of business to kick off this contest. Any threads showing off "WIPs" should be made here in the 3D art section with a title of Contest Entry WIP - your username here -A08, replacing the line "your username here" with your USER NAME. So my entry WIP thread would look like this -
Contest Entry WIP - SYF - A08
You may make a WIP thread and post progress of your model there.
Now As for the Final Entries.
1.) They Must be formated in 3DS or MS3D format and sent to myself. I will examine the models for poly counts and confirm them to the Judges. Any model exceeding 10,000 will automatically be disqualified from the contest. Sorry, Rules are rules.
2.) You must post at least 16 images (not te exceed 24) of your final entry in the official final entry thread. That thread will not be available to post in until the second week of July.
3.) All entries will be hosted on the site for all members to access. By entering the contest, you agree to allow members of MSFC to use the models for thier use, with the expection of including in content to be hosted off MSFC. This includes mods and imaging purposes. Also note, All 3DS models will be converted to MS3D format regardless and both versions will be hosted.
Contest Ends on Monday - 1st of September, 2008.
