Big E!!!:excited: Sweet work man.

Thanks, thanks very much!

Awesome! Great tributes!

I figured I did one for the Japs, so I better do one for the USN...

The big E! Looks great! Is that your model for it?

Only thing that strikes me as off is the coloring of the cockpit, seems just a little too blue. But that's just me.

No, its a picture of the Enterprise taken from a Catalina I think, in 1942... If the source was telling the truth... Google images and Wikimedia Commons are your friends!

And now you mention it, the canopy IS too blue.. also if you look real close, you can see the pilot is transparent... [/FACEPALM]

Hey guys - Hellkite got me all nostalgic for the Good old war birds of the US of A... so I made this...

picture.php

Yeah - the P51 D... aint she pretty?

Also, an Idea occurs - how cool would it be to have an MSFC Squadron?

You know - Kinda like what ISS - Enterprise D did with the Star Trek models - each member let me know what aircraft model they would like, and what to call it / registry number and I can texture it... Make a bunch of pics... you know...

So, If you want, let me know if you want;

Spitfire (Mk 1, V, or IX)
Hurricane (Mk 1, IIa, or IIc)
Mustang Mk Iv (UK version of the P51k)
P-51d
F4F Wildcat
A6m Zero
Bf 109E
G4M Betty

Plus any tips on the sort of nose art you would like... You know, if you want...

A shame there is no P47 on the list DJ. It is my absolute favorite WWII airplane. If you did do one, I'd like very much for it to look like Robert Johnson's from the Wolfpack.

Sure TF, I could do a Jug for ya - in fact, let it be my next project! - I love the late war USAAF designs - the varied nose art looks amazing too!

I'm not all that familiar with aircraft designs, that's what I have Jetfreak and Hellkite for. :lol2:

However if there are one of those big bombers in there I would like one of those, if not then whatever plane design you would like to give me. As for art how about the colours of MSFC? I could even get you a copy of the PSD version of the MSFC logo so you can pain it on the hull somewhere too.

Republic Aviation's P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the Jug" was short for "Juggernaut" its the largest, heaviest, and most expensive fighter aircraft in history to be powered by a single reciprocating engine.

A B-17 would be legit, I've loved those things ever since I saw Pearl Harbor as a kid. I think I only bought that movie for the battle scenes...

I think a G4M Betty is the closest to what I am after. After reading Zelph's post I hit google and found that the B-17 was actually what I was thinking of. :)

B17s, bah, Avro Lancaster Mk1 has far more class (of course I could be biased being a Brit :D). But my All time favourite is the de Havilland Mosquito FBVI (4x .303s, 4x 20mm, capability for 8x underwing rockets, and an internal weapons bay, all in a small, agile, fast airframe). However if I recall the Mozzie wasn't that successful in the Pacific theatre, glue kept melting.

I am somewhat partial to the B25 though, especially as you could argue it's Carrier capable...

Anyways, good work as always dinosaur, I'll have a think about the MSFC sqn idea.

B25, B17, anything that has that large bomber feel is what I like. I am not someone who likes only one.

Heh - yeah - the Jug's a beast, huh?

So, so far we have;

Thunderfoot - P47 Thunderbolt (Robert Johnson Special)
Majestic - B17 Flying Fortress
Zelph - B17 Flying Fortress
dinosaurJR - P51 Mustang
kjc733 - B25 Mitchel (or maybe a Mossie...)
Hellkite - P47 Thunderbolt (although wouldn't you want a replica of your P38?)

Ok - thats a pretty eclectic mixed unit... We need more recruits! MSFC needs YOU!

Also, its ok, I took the MSFC logo straight from the site and played around with it... You'll see...

Sweet, also a question/request. If it's at all possible to get the below image on there somewhere, even edited, that'd be amazing. If not though, no big really. :)

OK, I have nose art now.
picture.php

I was thinking the sword on the top side with the fuller running along the line of symmetry and the lines parallel to the blade furthest out would be near the middle if you were looking at the plane from the side. I hope that made sense.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should have done something simpler...

Thanks DJ! You Rrock Dude! Beautiful pics! All of them. I see you've chosen to model the C rather than the more well known D or N versions of the Jug. The Wolf Pack was the 'other' fighter group in the 8th Air Force. The media of the time tended to concentrate their attention on the 4th FG, which came out of the RAF's 'Eagle' Squadrons. Much more glamorous, like the Flying Tigers in China. The thing which makes Johnson unique is he never lost a member of his flight when he was lead. He spent down time training others aand after a rocky start he quickly learned the value of being part of a team during aerial combat.

No mate - thank you! You really introduced me to a chapter of history I had over looked previously - Johnson, Gabreski, Zemke, names that as a massive WW2 aviation buff I should have known, but didnt...

I really got into this project - I actually made both variants of the Jug, but Johnson's tour ran out mid '44 - he never flew (as far as I know) the later bloc 22 onward "bubble" P47 d in combat - only the good ol' Razorback version (also a P47 d - but an earlier manufacturing block 01 - 20, I think) - so I decided to model and texture the second P47 he flew "Lucky" - together they scored 22 confirmed kills (until an unnamed pilot crashed it for him:oops:). I decided to leave off the nose art, as it was a little too "adult" for this site...

Here is the later P - 47 for comparison (sorry, the later P-47 is in its birthday suit - not been painted yet...;

picture.php

I also figured, since you asked so nicely, that you should get double the Juggy goodness - so I added "Gabby" Gabreski for good measure - its an earlier P47 that he flew - up to February '44 I think - after he upgraded to a later type P-47... I might do this one too...

What really gets me excited about these brave men that flew the 7 ton Jug in combat is that they were up against smaller, lighter and far more maneuverable foes - the 109 and 190 were far lighter and had higher turn rates... But the majority of Johnson and Gabreski's kills were against 109s and snub nosed 190s... only a few 110 and 410 kills mixed in...

Also - I am so ordering Thunderbolt! from Amazon...

DJ, one of the more popular misconceptions about the Jug, and the Lightning as well, is they were less maneuverable than their opponents. There was no airplane in the ETO I am aware of which could out dive or out roll a Jug. Later on when the P47 was refitted with the four blade "paddle blade" prop there were very few which could out climb her as well. Johnson mentions this again and again in Thunderbolt! Good read, BTW. Martin Caidin has a couple of others you may enjoy as well. One is called Zero! and is a fascinating view of the air war in the Pacific from the perspective of the Japanese pilots. He interviewed Saburo Sakai who was the Imperial Navy's ace of aces. Another is his book about the P 38. Caidin was part of the 14th Air Force staff as a historian, so he is very knowledgeable and can speak the lingo as well. Another book you may enjoy is named, Horrido! A series of interviews and reminices of the WW2 German aces, like Galland, Hartman, Ruedel, and Gunther Rall. Thanks again for the Jug pics. Using them as wall paper for my desktop!

Wow - thanks TF - that is an honor indeed. And I shall look out for those books - I have a growing interest in all things in vintage aviation - talking of the P38, Ive been reading about "****" Bong, great man... Also, just last night I bought IL2 Sturmovik - 1946 on Steam - it is quite frankly one of the best flight sims I have ever played - it can be super realistic or it can be a pick up n play shoot em up - thanks for the recommendation!!

Favourite mission so far - Pearl Harbor, scrambling in a P-40... Its fun to see how many kills you can get before you finally buy the farm...

DJ, I have Sturmovik as well and all the addons and expansions. You just ain't lived until you try the custom missions where you can get as ahistorical as you like. F-4U1A1s sweeping in over Abbeville at angels five and shouting 'Wakey, wakey!' over the radio is a blast! I have really enjoyed some of the winding matches I have gotten into online in a Jug or a Corsair! It is a great flight sim and I really like split essing right down the deck in my Razorback with a Bf109g centered in the gunsight and swelling until he fills the windscreen.

Sometimes I even manage to avoid auguring in after the kill, lol.
