I'll admit that I know very little about planes, but I know a good model when I see one and that, Dino, is a good model .

Some excellent work on the scenes aswell. Masterful use of editing if I may say so :).

Aw! thanks mate - much appreciated!

Its not to bad, huh? The simple barrel shape of the Wildcat really helped me out on this though... Much simpler than the Spit, Hurri, or even the 109... Thanks!

Great stuff Dino.

Mate, you inspired this. I seem to remember you mentioning about having Aircraft Carriers... I then thought about how Spits didn't really operate from carriers (apart from Operation Torch - the Allied landings in North Africa)... The Seafire did though... as did the Sea Hurricane, but the exploits of the Fleet Air Arm really pale in comparison with the US Navy, US Army and the US Marine Core Aviators in the Pacific War...

So I figured; Wildcats, Hellcats, Corsairs, P-40s, Brewster Buffalos, A6M Zeros, Hayabusas, Bettys... That's the way to go! Chuck in the Big E (The USS Enterprise), the Hiryu, the Soryu, the USS Wasp and some other assorted badass warships and we got ourselves a ho-down!

Oh WOW! F4F's over Africa! Schweeeet! Want More Planes! Wasn't this version of the Wildcat also flown by the Cactus Air Force off Guadalcanal?

Yes sir, it is. At least I think it is - there are so many different types of Wildcat it's difficult to keep up... F4F-2, -3, -4, -5 (built by Grumman) then there are teh General Motors variants (GM-2, GM-3) There were fixed wing models, folding wing models, specials made for the French, there was the Martlet (the dumb name the FAA (Fleet Air Arm) gave the Wildcat). There were two gun models, four gun models, six shooters... Some came with the Wright Cyclone radial engine, others with the Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp... One thing I love about the Wild Cat is that there was a variant for everyone, and I mean EVERYONE!

Man Wildcat:thumbsup: Ant seen one of thoughs snce Midway:cool:

Tee Hee, I know what ya mean!

As for the Cactus AF, I think this is a little more representative;

Oh thanks I feel honoured, I've never inspired anyone before so it's great to see I've inspired someone, rather than me being inspired by others for a change. :D

You are sure getting better with modelling and textures, that's some first class work there. I might not know much about planes and modern planes but this is great quality and realism, in any-case I have my heads above the clouds more than I do in them. :lol2:

Hello:
And I agree with Majestic, they look very nice. Can I ask what plans do you have for these models? maybe you can make some movies, or a mod .

Keep it up!

Hmmm - that my South American chum is a good question... a bit of a poser you might say...

The answer is somewhat metaphysical...

Which is just another way of saying that I am not too sure; I could;

1) Release the models as textured meshes, and just let y'all play around with them...

2) Try to put them into some sort of A2 air war mod...

3) Just convert them to SOD, give them a wee odf type thing, maybe some weapons, then release then as a stand alone release... you could then strafe Birds of Prey with Spitfires and dogfight Bf 109s with Defiants to your hearts content...

Would that be a Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu(Type 4)?

Looks legit by the way, always loved bombers. Any chance of a B-17 one of these days?

I must confess that axis aircraft are not my specialty (and are usually ungly critters in my opinion). But I'm with Starfox here, looks just like a Betty. Though according to wiki shouldnt it be a single cannon on the dorsal turret?

(Wiki is your friend, but sometimes wrong)

Sorry, no - it IS a Mitsubishi, but not an Army design

Thanks! It was fun to make - although I think a Flying Fortress would be extra mega kingkong omega poly heavy - this model is sitting at 15,000...

Looking great DinoJR. :)

Thanks matey!

DINGDINGDINGDING! A case of Saki and an awesome Samurai Sword to that gent there.

This is indeed an Mitsubishi G4M - "Betty" to the Allies. The heaviest bomber the IJN built during the war. Very fast and very long range, but sadly at the expense of crew protection and any armor what so ever... Even the Japanese called it the "Type 1 Lighter" or "Hamaki" (Nihongo for Cigar).

Apparently there were reports of these guys getting shot down from small arms fire, due to poor sealing on the fuel tanks (I think they used "wet wing" construction) i.e. the whole wing was the fuel tank...

Gee - I don't know - I was really just playing around with the guns... I think you could be right - the G4M1 had a single 30 cal MG in the dorsal position, the G4M2 a single 20mm cannon... (according to Wikipedia)

It is indeed a Betty. I have shot down a bunch of these in Aces over the Pacific

I am actually on the look out for a good quality Pacific Theater combat flight sim... Any ideas? Older game preferably...

This is the color scheme used by the early Zeros

picture.php

I think this is the color scheme around the time of Pearl Harbour...

picture.php

I think this is the late war scheme (when they started using the gray / olive camo scheme...) Also, bonus points to anyone who knows the significance of the White bands around the national insignia...

Also, more bonus free extra stuff!

I gots to playing around in PSP9 an, well, see for yourself...

EDIT: on second thoughts, those would look much cooler without the weak text in the corner... I shall correct this travesty forthwith...

Great work Dino, these look great. I love the fabric looking images at the bottom. How did you get that background effect?

If you don't have one, I highly recommend you get yourself a DeviantART profile and become my friend. :lol2: You'll get a little more exposure on your art, some people have even gotten jobs through the site.

Keep them coming, I love the effect you have with the engines, is that done through alpha channels?

I believe the stripes were used by the various squadron commanders and CAGS as a means for pilots to quickly ID the boss on combat. Makes sense. We used the same idea on tanks.

DJ, if you're looking for a good WWII based flight sim which will test you thoroughly, UbiSoft's IL-Sturmovik series is about the very best one I know of. And it is a true sim. I have the Pacific Fighters expansion as well. Another excellent game highly recommended by moi. Corsairs of VF-17 vs. FW190Ds of JG26 over Western Europe is not anywhere near historical but it is a real blast! I need two more kills to make ace and I am flying a bomber escort tomorrow.

You make some stunning planes, dJR!

I had a project a while back where I modeled the late successors to your planes: F-86 Sabre, MiG-15 and MiG-21.

Just a wee picture I made from 2d renders of the 3d models... This was a lot of fun to make and is also my new desktop...

As for all of your comments on the images previously, thank you all so much - Im glad that y'all like the pics! I certainly get a lot of satidfaction making them!

The idea was to make them look like oil paint on canvas... So I used various artmedia effects in PSP9 - the "weave" effect in the background was probably the easiest effect to introduce, but had the biggest impact..

The prop effect is really just a material setting in MS3D... Nothing too difficult... It does make a big difference though...

The big E! Looks great! Is that your model for it?

Only thing that strikes me as off is the coloring of the cockpit, seems just a little too blue. But that's just me.
