Hello all,

I've decided to create this thread to outline what the Parallels Release Project is and what is coming up next.

What is the Parallels Release Project?

The Parallels Release Project, using the "PAR" abbreviation from Parallels is a small project aimed at bring the content created from the old modification known as Parallels that was never released to the MSFC Community.

Parallels was a Crossover mod, meaning it had factions from various science fiction shows all rolled into one mod. These factions were all human based and all equivalent in technology status to help making balancing easier.

The races initially in in PAR were:
  • Earth Alliance from Babylon 5
  • Colonials aka Twelve Colonies of Kobol from Battlestar Galactica TNS
  • Galactic Empire from Star Wars
  • Peacekeepers from Farscape
  • Terran Federation from Starship Troopers
  • Tau'ri from Stargate

However later in the modifications production the Tau'ri and Terran Federation were cut with initial plans to have then in a possible later expansion.

What has recently been?

Recent releases:
Major:
  1. EAS Washington, Hyperion Class
  2. EAS Athena, Midwinter Class
  3. Colonial Music

Minor:
  1. Cylon's Imperial Models
  2. Stargate Meshes
  3. Starship Trooper Models

Old Releases:
All:
  1. Parallels Music Samples
  2. Earth Alliance Music
  3. Galactic Empire Music
  4. Tau'ri Music
  5. Terran Federation Music
  6. Imperial Fortress Class
  7. Imperial Quasar Class
  8. Imperial Tie Fighter Class

What is the difference between major, minor and old releases?
In a nut shell:

"Old releases" are releases that were released a while back, anywhere from a year or longer. Some of these will be getting a v1.1 release which is an improvement version on the v1.0.

"Major releases" are releases that have basically everything you need to get in-game and are what I believe to be substantial.

"Minor Releases" are releases that need work to complete, work that I simply don't have in me, whether it me due to my lack of abilities, lack of time or some other factor. They are released in the hopes someone else will take the initiative and finish them off and release then at MSFC.

What else is there is in store for the Parallels Release Project?

There are several little things I am working on and are outlined below:

  1. Battlestar Galactica Columbia Class Battlestar aka Battlestar Galactica
  2. Battlestar Galactica Mercury Class Battlestar aka Battlestar Pegasus
  3. Battlestar Galactica Valkyrie Class Battlestar Pack aka Battlestar Valkyrie and Variants
  4. Battlestar Galactica Solaria Class Battlestar aka Battlestar Solaria
  5. Battlestar Galactica Jumpstar Class
  6. Battlestar Galactica Raptor Class Assault Variant
  7. Battlestar Galactica Rangar Station
  8. Imperial Quasar Class v1.1
  9. Imperial Fortress Class v1.1
  10. Imperial Deep Space Manufacturing Facility aka Tie Factory
  11. Imperial Tie Bomber
  12. Imperial Tie Fighter (1496 Poly Version) v1.1
  13. Imperial Tie Fighter
  14. Imperial Tie Defender
  15. Imperial Victor Class Frigate
  16. Imperial Venator Class Star Destroyer
  17. Imperial Acclamator Class Cruiser
  18. Imperial Legacy Class Star Destroyer
  19. Peacekeeper Mini-Mod
  20. Various Shipyards

And no doubt more to come as I sort through my files from Parallels.

This thread will be constantly updated with news, new downloads, WIP posts and hopefully community feedback, suggestion posts and general discussions over the project.

Hello:
Besides of the Leviathans, I have lots of other ships that I plan to release, like the Rodger Young and variants, the Athena (the ship that appeared at the end of Starship Troopers3, but the texture is still a wip) and lots of Battlestars.
About BSG, I must be careful as I guess they may be featured in BSA too. But I am not as sure as I was told there are already many ships already included.
I hope those ships could be well received, and I am also planning to release them in Armada2files and in Valimar (if it is possible).
Good luck with your project Majestic!

Glad to see this is happening. I am a little surprised at how warmly my recent BSG based mods have been recieved. They are average in my view. Anything BSG based in PAR which is released to the Community has to be a good thing. The B5 stuff is also excellent. I was a latecomer to B5 but it is solid science fiction story telling with a great deal of quality materials. These are fine work and I really think the Community as a whole has undervalued the talents of Syf and yourself.

I love Starship Troopers and it did pain me to remove them from Parallels when I was doing it. I can't wait to see what you cooked up Chiletrek.

I was of the understanding that BSA was cancelled, Grethor last I heard disappeared and Score is now working on Stargate stuff.

Thanks Chiletrek and good luck to you too. :)

EAS_Intrepid did the modelling and textures for the majority of the Babylon 5 models in PAR, including the recently released B5 stuff.

Oh and that reminds me I forgot to add the following models which will also be part of the project:

  • Babylon 6/Clark EA Headquarters
  • EA Sagittarius Frigate
  • EA Olympus Corvette
  • EA Nova Dreadnought
  • EA Omega Battleship
  • EA Avenger Carrier
  • EA Thunderbolt Fighter
  • EA Starfury Fighter
  • EA Tanker
  • EA Construction Ship
  • EA Liner
  • EA Psi Corps Liner

And the list continues, even a few Star Wars, Babylon 5 and Stargate models by Syf too. :)

Additionally, I plan on releasing some more Babylon5 stuff. I will submit a Narn G'Quan cruiser either today or tomorrow. More stuff, like fully hardpointed Minbari warships and two other Narn cruisers will follow. Though these were not in Parallels, they complete the collection of Babylon 5 ships that you can download here at MSFC.

I will follow Maj's procedure of releasing hardpointed models, but with no odfs. Instead of a hardpoint map you will get the ms3d-file (as well as an .3ds file).

@ Maj: Can you open up a subsection for Babylon 5 in the Download area?

BTW: It is good to see all the models released. There's no use of these models when people cannot work (or rather play) with 'em!

I also suggest a HP map, as not everyone has or knows how to use MS3D. ;)

I will certainly look into it.

I agree with that statement, hence why I am doing this project. :)

I'd love it if Farscape went from #19 on that todo list to something much closer to #1 :p

This is great news Majestic. PAR was one of my most looked forward to mods.

Thanks, oh and that list is in no particular order. In fact my plan is to release COE Part 1 (the Cardassians) then get the Peacekeeper Mini complete and out. :)

I am just doing some of the almost ready and complete smaller files first. Most of these only require hardpointing and the basics like build buttons, wireframes etc to be complete.

Oh and the Battlestar Solaria is almost ready for release.

A little bit of background information now on the vessel.

The Solaria, was the prototype for the new Solaria class, designed to be more advanced than the Mercury class but also smaller. The Solaria was designed from the ground up to be the gleaming jewel of the Colonial Fleet. However during her first test flight the Solaria disappeared. Thought destroyed this put a halt on the production of the class. A year later the class went back into production, however she used more common technology like that found on the Mercury class.

The Battlestar Solaria however wasn't destroyed and in fact jumped accidentally way beyond the red line. With her FTL badly damaged and only able to make small jumps she slowly returned to Colonial space which too a full two years. Due to this she never got upgraded with Baltar's Program and upon her arrival she discovered the Colonies under attack from the Cylons.

The Solaria only barely manage to survive, albeit reported destroyed in the chaos of the attack to Colonial forces including the Galactica. She then escaped to a hidden colonial research and military centre that few in the Colonies knew about and from there launched guerrilla attacks on the Cylons in the Colonies.

The ship was built and designed by EAS_Intrepid, with some input from me during the design phase. I personally really like this design due to her resemblance to the original 1970's Galactica. She also has a poly count of under 2000.

It's great to see the PAR material making it to the community, I'm sure I'll be downloading and installing all of it as comes out :)

I was of the understanding that BSA was cancelled, Grethor last I heard disappeared and Score is now working on Stargate stuff.

No thankfully BSA is still going, Chiletrek joined the mod team a while back and has been doing a fantastic job working on getting it ready for release. Yeah Greathor vanished a while ago but the mod is still going, Score works on his Stargate mod as a kind of side project to keep from getting bored lol.

Pretty much all of the mods activity goes on on their forum, so I'd check there for updates rather than on FF.

First off I have to say I really like the look of the Solaria. I too am a fan of the original series hence why I was working on the tos basestar.

Second off..I feel there is not enough B5 stuff floating around for A2 so I am thrilled to know that more B5 stuff is coming out.

Third off...I hope BSA somehow is completed this year as I am eagerly awaiting it.

Fourth off....If releasing models I would make up some form of HP map just for reason that not everyone has ms3d and also assimview sometimes dosent work with some sods(namely FlOps ones)..

But anyways I am eager for more material from the par project. I am planning on making a 3rd install of FlOps to port all these mods into and create my own personal "when universes colide" type mod but Im sure I will have a hell of a time balancing everthing to each other.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:Keep 'em coming!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I might remind people, a HP map is a good idea, and note that an HP map can be a text document. I find doing the Text version is a lot quicker. Just have to know the difference in Port, Aft, Starboard, etc. But also one can use simple terms like "Top-Left Wing", "Bottom-Middle-Lower-Hull", etc. Final note, not everyone understands Naval/seafaring terminology, so you might stick with the simpler type terms.:)

Hey guys! I only today noticed I could come back into these boards as every time I tried I couldn't see anything on the page. Anyway great to be back!

You guys have done exceptional work and I am so extremely happy to see Parallels active again, this was one of the main mods that drew me to MSFC a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the new release of the Hyperion and Midwinter, wow those models look so terrific! So much more detail than the stuff we had back when I was working on B5A2.

I have no problems at all making my own odfs, God knows I made plenty of them, but I would like to request also the HP maps because I do not have any program to view the 3ds files or any modeling programs to help me see the hps to make my odfs.

Such a fine choice of races too! Can't wait to see some of the BSG stuff and the Peacekeepers. It's too bad about the Terran Federation side and the Tau'ri but if it's too much work Majestic then don't sweat it, the mod will be awesome as it is. And thanks to Chiletrek for the work to be released, love the Rodger Young!

Of course the EA is still my fave and I can't wait to see the Omega and the Nova!!!

You guys rock!

That's awesome, you're sure living up to the title :Every mods biggest fan". :)

First off I have to say I really like the look of the Solaria. I too am a fan of the original series hence why I was working on the tos basestar.

Yes I always look at it as a TOS Battlestar rebirth. I even think if the two series were ever connected, maybe the Colonials of TOS found old Colonial diagrams of the Solaria (badly degraded) and used them as a basis for their Battlestar.

Second off..I feel there is not enough B5 stuff floating around for A2 so I am thrilled to know that more B5 stuff is coming out.

Yes more to come for sure.

Fourth off....If releasing models I would make up some form of HP map just for reason that not everyone has ms3d and also assimview sometimes dosent work with some sods(namely FlOps ones)..

:thumbsup::thumbsup:Keep 'em coming!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That was our (the PAR team) biggest concern, the balancing. I think it may have been subconsciously why I removed the Tau'ri... transporters the other groups don't have them and gave the Tau'ri the advantage that and shields.

They'll continue to come, when I get the time.

Hey guys! I only today noticed I could come back into these boards as every time I tried I couldn't see anything on the page. Anyway great to be back!

Yeah we had some issues with the site, hence one of the reasons for the new skin. I would personally like to apologise for that.

You guys have done exceptional work and I am so extremely happy to see Parallels active again, this was one of the main mods that drew me to MSFC a couple of years ago.

Really on B5A2, well here we have a legend. I did not know this, after all these years. You find something out everyday.

In the defence of the B5A2 models, we must all remember it was a different time back then, gaming standards were not as high as they are now today and many modders have discovered new ways of doing things, things not possible back when such mods were created. B5A2 even while outdated is still on my top 3 favourite A2 mods that have been released.

I have no problems at all making my own odfs, God knows I made plenty of them, but I would like to request also the HP maps because I do not have any program to view the 3ds files or any modeling programs to help me see the hps to make my odfs.

HP maps are going to be a standard with all PAR files, so no request is required. I want to make it easier for modders and anyone who downloads it as anyone can make a odf right? But not everyone can find the hardpoints on a model, right again? :)

Such a fine choice of races too! Can't wait to see some of the BSG stuff and the Peacekeepers. Yes we choose the races rather carefully. The Colonials, Earth Alliance and Peacekeepers were the first, followed by the Galactic Empire and finally by the Tau'ri and Terran Federation. Out of the last two, the Terran Federation was my favourite and fit into the mod better. I may one day see about going back and making a full race for them, we are talking after all current projects are completed and released here.

I too am looking forward to Chiletrek's releases, gotta love the Terran Federation.

Oh no a legend by no means, though I sure got a huge ego boost out of that LOL.

I wasn't a huge part of the mod; I went under the name of Ghost Rider and started with the team back in B5A1 making all the mod's build buttons and then moved onto B5A2, making the first set of build buttons and the Admiral's Log pics. I think all my build buttons were replaced with much better ones but I think the mod still uses my Admiral's Log pics. I made my own personal A2 mod combining lots of other stuff and using B5A2's assests I would get in Dev releases so I never had B5A2 as they released it; my own Parallels if you will. :lol2:

Oh the models they released back then were great for their time and the modelers sweat bullets to make them; I thought they held up really well against the ones used by the cancelled B5 Stamods mod. I became good friends with Paul White (Known as Coffee Boy then) who made the Artemis, Orpheus, Hecatoncheires, among a few others for me personally and the team liked them so much they put them in B5A2. Paul even made for me an unreleased SA-43A Hammerhead from Space Above and Beyond which I added custom markings for and still use ingame to this day as well as the USS Sulaco from Aliens.

Thanks for the HP Maps, those are always a Godsend. I remember using Storm 3d back in A1 to see and edit HPs which was a pain but the limited capabilities of A2's Storm 3d prevent even this.

I love the Terran Federation, too bad Armada didn't have ground battles like SW: Empire at War otherwise it'd be awesome to see the Troopers attacking in squads alongside their Marauders.

In any case, I more than look forward to seeing the PAR releases as they come and judging from the level of quality of both the new and old releases you made I can safely say it will be one of the best mods A2 has ever seen!

Absolutely. I haven't seen the models from the B5 Stamod. Are there any images or downloads still somewhere on the net?

The B5A2 models were good, indeed.

USS Sulaco... I'll see if I can get my hands on some schematics or a high poly 3d mesh and build it myself.

What I'd really like to see are the infantry units from the original novel. A tactics game based on Heinlein's book would be the best sci-fi-ground forces sim EVER.

Don't get me wrong they have stood up very well, so much that till this day people play the mod, I among them. They still look very good.

Yes A2 had a lot of things taken out or hardcoded, this included it's viewer as I used to change models back in my A1 days for my own installs as well.

Yes quality is the key here, I want to do PAR justice and at least have proper releases with everything there.

I just noticed I forgot the Admiral Logs pic for the recently released Solaria, it will be included with the Mercury which is rounding up for release after I fixed a hardpoint error.

Hi Intrepid:

I poked around for a bit but Stamods died after 3 server switches back in 2002 so I doubt any of their pics are still online. They never got very far with the B5 mod, only 5-6 ships they showed off on their forums but never released.

I remember I loved their Nova Dreadnought better than the one we used because our Nova used alpha channels/transparencies?, I forgot what it was called, for the cannons. Meaning that the cannons on our Nova were a flat sticker which looked good only from top view. Their Nova had the cannons properlly modelled so I thought it looked better albeit it slightly undetailed. Still both did the job.

I'd love a blend of the Heinlen novel and the movie a la the Starship Trooper Chronicles myself...I love both the book and film :)

I know what you meant regarding the models. In fact part of the reason I can enjoy much more detailed models ingame today is because the computer I now have is much more powerful than the one I had back then. The models have evolved a lot over time as much as the comps. The models nowadays heavily reflect that.

I still have the very first released B5 models for A1 and comparing the very first A1 Hyperion to your new Midwinter is like putting a biplane next to the F-35 Lightning.

Hey,

Indeed computers do play a role in today's Armada 2 modelling. However the engine still has the same limits obviously that being only so many pollies can be on screen at once before lag. It was why Parallels was going to be less on swarming ships and more on smaller fleets, due to the idea and concept behind the mod and the complex designs requiring larger poly counts to get the quality we wanted.

Now the Mercury is almost ready for release, I should have her up sometime on Sunday as I still need to do the HP map and readme, and this evening I am going up north with Katala to have dinner with some friends and tomorrow it's house hunting with a couple of inspections.

However rather than make you all wait, I have produced a couple of screenshots of the ship for you to look at. The rest I took will be for the download file description.

Well today I began modding in some of the releases from PAR into FlOps....I picked the solaria first just cuz Im a BSG nut and I have this to say...

"WOW"

Thats all I can say. Im gonna be bold and say its the best BSG model for A2 to date. Between the hardpointing and poly size....but especially the tex..and are those Lightmaps that make the hull light up when heavy ordinace is fired?

I even took some pretty screenshots....its not often I get inspired to do screencaps....but when I do I go nutzo, especially with the solaria.

I will attach one my fave.....

Anyways I just wanted to give you guys a big
And thank you for such a great model to shoot up the toasters with:D

Nope, it's phong lighting, all the models I convert to A2 I apply phong lighting too. As you have discovered it really brings them to life.

You're most welcome, it's the entire reason behind these releases and getting feedback behind this makes it all worth while. We want you all to be able to use them as it's useless to have them sitting on our hard drives doing nothing. ;)

Hallelujah! More new stuff right now and obviously more new stuff to come. Solaria is a nice model. For those whom want her fully in game I suggest taking the ODF from Mike McKeon's Valkyrie and adapting it. A2 PP X has a set of BSG physics which should do nicely. I think I named them Battlestar2. The BSG Colonial Weapons Pack has some good weapon choices as well. None these adaptations would require any more than using Notepad and adding the finished files to the game.

In my install, Solaria is a Missile Boat, or more accurately, an Aegis-style cruiser whose primary weapons loadout consists of six missile launchers and eight secondary batteries. The missiles have a long range, a longer reload time and a good sized warhead which does about half the damage of a Rommie Plasma Torp. In addition to the complement of Vipers and Raptors she carries, I had ideas for a pair of Special Weapons which would match her loadout. I cannot currently get the ones I have to work properly. Perhaps someone else would like to take a whack at them? Here they are:

1) Track While Scan. Allows a ten percent increase in hit probability with a corresponding 10 percent increase in damage to all allied/ friendly ships within range of the Solaria Duration is about fifteen to twenty seconds. Against Cylon vessels, due to their innate abilities, these improvements are only five percent.(Cylons can use the Colonial Defense Network software to degrade the effectiveness of this Special Weapon.)

2) Countermeasures. Reduces the range and accuracy of enemy Torpedo and missile based weapons by ten precent. Again, against Cylons these are only reduced by about five percent, due to the CDN software with all those back doors Number Six coded into it. Duration is ten to fifteen seconds.

Hello all,

The Beast (Pegasus/Mercury Class) is complete and ready for upload. But considering there is already several models of her floating around I thought I would hold off on her until I get another BSG model complete, the Galactica aka the Bucket.

So soon the Bucket and the Beast will be coming soon to MSFC.

I am very happy to see people enjoying the releases, some feedback on the actual files themselves would be appreciated as well as it will help people decide whether or not to download them.

Keep the feedback coming on the files and here in this thread, it really motivates me to get these out as soon as I can. I have even halted work on COE until I get a good proportion of the PAR files out to you all.

Now a request, anyone who is mildly good at making textures for models and is eager or willing to make a few for some of the non textured models I have from PAR please PM me. It will help to bring the quality of the PAR content up to better standards than my own plain attempts.

And beauties they are man, top notch work all around.

Although If I may, I'd like to offer some critique to further improve them.

While everything is superb, like the textures, hardpointing and built-in speculars, I did find fault in the material settings of two battlestars. The Columbia and Solaria.

You see, they should go completely black when there is no lighting present.

See here for comparison.

Compared to the Sovereign, they still manage to stand out a bit. (The sovy has no visible textures apart from the lighting while the battlestars still have some hull visible).

It's a minor flaw and I'd appreciate it if you can fix it man.

Do any of the other models I have released do that, Pegasus, Hyperion, Defiant? Reason I ask is that I have the exact same material settings on all my models since I started work on Yesteryears and checked all of these before releasing them.

EDIT: The only thing I can think of is maybe I need to re-convert the textures and lightmaps.

I haven't checked the other ships, but only the two seem to have the problem currently.

EDIT: The only thing I can think of is maybe I need to re-convert the textures and lightmaps.

Not at all, its in the model itself.

Well they are the same settings I Have always used and haven't had any issues. If you or anyone else could send me your/their material settings I'll try those out and if they are the problem I have a lot of work ahead of me.
