"Doug Liman Producing New Knight Rider Series
Source: Variety September 27, 2007

NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," hiring Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) to produce a Transformers-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.

Variety says the network is developing a two-hour pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature schedule allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.

Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside executive producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Productions.

The trade says the success of Transformers had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that small screen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.

It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original series, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, the series is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car."

Much as I love the original Knight Rider, i only have one thing to say to this:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

They've tried remakin it before. Knight Rider 2000, which was sorta 'meh' even though the pilot movie starred the Hoff, William Daniels (kitts voice) and Edward Mulhare.

Knight Rider 2010 - absolutely dire - the 'bad' car was built out of a wrecked stealth fighter after some sort of mad max inspired apocalyse, and the good guys car was I think a mustang with a heck of a lot of body armour and a rocket launcher in one of its front lights, and couldnt talk or do anything cool by itself until it was taken over by some holographic representation/ghost (memories a bit fuzzy on that) - it was godawful.

Team Knight Rider - worse than 2000, better than 2010. not that thats saying much. Had some memorable bits scattered between episodes, and 1 episode that was brilliant (KRO) and was good enough to get one season (2010 was a bad TV movie, and 2000 was supposed to be a TV movie/pilot show - apparently 6 episodes were filmed but never aired) which is more than the others did, but still not all that great.

I cant see any attempt at revival going well. The Hoff's been tryin to get a movie version made for the last couple of years and last i heard it fell through - because the studio wanted the car to not talk

if they remake it, i will give it a fair go, but i fully expect badness.

he'd be too old for it now anyway - unless they had it as a kind of sequel, with the Hoff's "Michael Knight" character acting more in Devon's role overseeing some new kid - which was the proposed plot for one of the movies they talked about and never materialised

That would still be (pardon the phrase) a "suck fest"....

the whole idea of it makes me want to go out and commit random acts of violence lol. well, maybe not random. more like directed at the 'geniuses' that want to revive it. theyve tried and failed before. learn the lesson already producers!

I don't know, this could be good. Depends what they do. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the original - have all the boxsets and am extremely envious of the guy that shops in Asda with a black TransAm :cry2: - but I don't think they done as much as they could.

Now there is such a thing as using a good name to much, look at Trek and what happened there. A Knight Rider: The Next Generation series would most likely have flopped more than a dead flower in the middle of winter which had just been trod on by a rather large bovine.

But, a new series after such a long time could be good. If they done it right. A few things that should be done in my opinion are these:

Avoid:
- Same actors. I liked KITT and his voice as much as anyone; but voices age and not to mention the fact that Hasselhoff was the worst choice for Knight that anyone could possibly make.

- Same plot. Set it a few years after, don't try to re-invent what works.

- A wholly CGI car. On a TV budget it won't work. It'd be better to have both a physical and computer prop

Include:
- Cameos and references. As much as we may not like it, Hasselhoff was part of the Knight Rider lineage so make a brief appearance as some sort of old man in a mental asylum saying things about talking cars.

- The idea of shape-shifting. If they can pull this off and make it look good then I'll watch the series. Of course ILM would be the best choice for this but I don't think they'd accept.

- Good voice actors. Peter Cullen would make an excellent voice for the car. And maybe a nice touch would be Frank Welker lending his talents to the arch-enemy.

Just my thoughts.

See, now theres a contradiction. For anyone who doesn't know, Peter Cullen provided the voice of Karr, Kitts evil 'twin' in "Trust doesn't Rust" - Karr being the original prototype vehicle built by Knight Industries and deactivated for being self serving and basically a danger to anyone in its way as it was programmed to put itself before anyone else...

Though to be fair, Karr did sound ace in that appearance. and was waaaaaay cooler than Kitt in my opinion...

all I can say is that UNless it has the Hoff and a 3rd gen trans am in it its not gonna work. But hopefully itll make the value of my car go up if it does.

(Btw ive got a Firebird that looks almost exactly like K.I.T.T.)

Edit: Picture size exceeded 600x600 size. Post as a thumbnail if it exceeds that limit please. -Crazyfrog1903

im so jealous of you right now. i always wanted one of those :(

judgin by the spoiler and wheel trim, yours is the '89 model, yes?

then again, they were interchangable, even the spoiler, so u cud easily convert the 89 to look like the 82 model. and vice versa i suppose...

(and before anyone contradicts, ive read about that on a site that deals extensively with customing pointiacs into kitt/karr)

Knight Rider Jr:
E! News - NBC's Son of Knight Rider - David Hasselhoff
"It looks like KITT has himself a new partner.

NBC has tapped soap star Justin Bruening to front a new Knight Rider TV movie that could serve as a pilot to a revived series based on the '80s action-adventure about a crimefighter and his talking Trans-Am.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the 28-year-old actor will play the son of Michael Knight, the original series' hero played by David Hasselhoff."

Interesting.
Not so sure on the whole Bot idea, sounds too cheesey even for Knight Rider and pretty blatantly taking off transformers following the success of the movie.

I still dont think its gonna work. especially if its not Kitt :D

lets face it guys... there is no way they could actuallly recreate the show any mroe than they could recreate the original galactica...

nobody would get away with being that up beat, overly moralistic and ... mulleted these days.

to be fair, i think the remake is a heck of a lot better than the original (meaning galactica obviously)

As for knight rider - any other attempt at a spin off has failed miserably. I dont think they can ever revive this one

travesty. complete travesty.

And two different vehicles anyway. different rear air scoop, and different wheel rims.
and where's the trademark LED on the front, or have they got rid of it like they did for *shudder* TKR?

Didnt the remake get canned completely anyway cos of the writers strike?

They should use an Aston Martin DBS, itd look much better :D

Wouldn't look right? But then it wouldn't be Knight Rider.

Have you seen the details for the pilot?
its got as much to do with Knight Rider as Knight Rider 2010 did - it shares the name and has a car that talks...

Isn't that the problem with any remake? I will give it a chance when it comes out.

To Australian viewers:
Andrew Mercado in yesterday's Sydney Sunday Telegraph reports that the new series will be coming on Australian TV possibly on 7.
