• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

Try somthing more like a Bell 212 with your tail section.

Bell!! Wash your mouth out with soap. Westland all the way :D

At the moment I've gone for a three poster arangement utilising a dual boom high tail configuration.

Oh I remember Airwolf very well :D Probably one of the things that pushed me into industry (now if I could just sell my jetcopter concept...)

Tis funny really, I saw a boxset of season 1 in my local CEX shop for £3 on Saturday - needless to say I gave it a good home and will be having myself a marathon session once I finish my current viewing of 24.

Airwolf is one of those that I want to build... just its waaay down the list of priorities.

looks good

but I have a Question

I see not The tail rotor , ducted fan or even NOTAR to counter the torque, are you planning on using two main rotors which turn in opposite directions, so that the torque created by one rotor cancels out the torque created by the other or coaxial contra-rotating main rotors, which means that both rotors spin around the same axis but in opposite directions?

Apologies for the confusion. This isn't a helicopter, it's a VTOL gunship. And whilst I know it's not necessarily technically as feasable as my last one, this uses direct thrust for lift. If you look carefully you'll see a grey exhaust nozzle built into the stub wing. Theres one on each side and a third between the tail pylons making a three-poster configuration. These nozzles are two-dimensional thrust vectoring.

Now if I were designing it for real I personnaly would go for the coaxial rotor configuration, but I'd probably try for a lower aspect design than the Russian Kamovs by using a more rigid rotorhead. Coax BERPS... mwhaha :yum:

I like this. Looks kinda like a next gen version of the GDI's Orca. Now with Stealth Technology. Very nice indeed.

Thanks. Orca was definately a source of inspiration, as was the Halo transport and the Wildcat and Apache helicopters.

I'd heard of the disc-rotor concept - I didn't realise that it had the retracting blades. One of the dafter ideas to come out of NASA (and they've had some daft ideas)! And it still suffers the torque issue, you get around it by running one of the auxilary turbofans running hotter than the other. And those tubines are still dead weight in the hover (just like the X2 and X3s propulsion units). It's unneccesary anyway, and I know that a BERP IV can reach 200kts indicated and still not hit the low speed stall so blade retraction is a bit moot as well.

That'd be it. Where did you find that? Never seen a coax 5 blade before.

Yep, contra-rotating BERP blades.

And of course Meerkat. AW have unvieled the 159 Wildcat, the Lynx Mk9a is being called the Mildcat in theatre, so I feel Meerkat is a logical progression (besides, the comparethemarket.com adverts are the best thing on the tv at the moment - simples! :D ).

Think I need to finish this properly as a helicopter. The original design was supposed to be submergable and hence have undercarriage doors, however usually thats just dead weight so I may model the retractable gear in.

Something I've been working on when bored. Originally it was going to just be a testbed for some new techniques I want to try, but I've gotten a bit carried away on the basic mesh...

Thanks, I probably will do more on it. And no, not a trek battlestar (not intentionally anyway), but you're right I am trying to draw design influences from elsewhere.

Anyway, the reason for this endeavour was to experiment with the grill effect, par example:
ship_04.PNG

I have seen construction on SciFi Mesh where people have built a whole grilled ship and then layed armour plate on top. Now whilst this will create the best visual effect (I assume) it is a.) Time consuming and b.) poly heavy. So I'm trying the other way round. Build the Outer hull and then cut away the grills.

This is the best way to do it actually as it does use a lot less poly's. Another alternative is to have the grills as block and the underneath have a single face that overlaps underneath for the main hull. However this makes it harder to texture correctly but does create a few less poly's. I have done things like that in the past to try and keep poly's down.

I have decided to see how far I can push this one. And I don't feel (too) guilty about not working HRM because I'm listening to BSG soundtracks on youtube whilst doing it :D

Anyway, more WIP shots
