Hi all,

I thought I would start to post a few pics of the models I have for BSA. I will add posts of new models as they are finnished.

First off, the Colonials. What I will be doing with the mod is using the idea from the Dom in FO and needing to build prototypes for the larger battlestar classes 1st.

Here are pics of the prototypes:

TOS Gunstar prototype:

The cygnus class, Gunstar class and Columbia class battlestar look a bit odd/out of place, but i like how the other models look.

What do u find odd about them? Which Columbia class do u mean? TOS or TNG?

I presume because the texture style appears different in the screencaps: aka, the Gunstar and Columbia have this bluish tint with less variegated armor, whereas the other ships in that era definitely are much mroe grey and white, with lots of mottling. :)

ahhh, The plan is to retexture the TNS Cheetah and the TNS Valor using the same texture file as the Columbia thus making them fit better (and saving on overall memory usage as only using the 1 texture file).

Does that mean the Cygnus will also get an overhaul like this?:

Cygnus (1).PNGCygnus (2).PNGCygnus A.jpgCygnus B.jpg

This model is by Kreeargh, which I poly reduced and did some adjustments to, the textures are originally by Coxxon, which again I had to alter to work on the mesh. This little bugger took like 24+ hours to do. It's one of the motivations I got to start doing my own textures. I'm much better at BSG textures than I am at anything else.

No, the Cygnus looks sweet ingame so will stay as it is.

Hello:
Well, what I do love is how the tos fleet looks like, they all have the same texture style, which is very close to the canon, and since I have seen many of the models, then I can say they are also quite nice with the polygons, so the tos fleet is great.

As for the tns fleet, I do agree that some designs have many coloruing variations, but that might bound to happen. But who knows? maybe new extra models can appear or retouches to be made, but what it is important is that the models work and they have to be balanced :) .

Hard to describe, but the wide central body jumps out. It's a feature not found in other vessels.
Also the studs in the center to the engine (is it an engine or hangar.. dunno) look fat.

Would a pair of slimmer struds not make the design a bit more sleek and in line with the other designs?

Hummmm, If I had editing rights for this thread I would just replace the old pic with the new one. I have reclassed the TNS Gunstar, its no longer a battlestar as ingame it is a much smaller unit. I will tweek the design soon.

Anyway, here is the rebuilt TNS Valor (shaved some polys during the processes):

Better?

Very nice! Looks like it'll fit with the Columbia/Galactica and other ships really well

Relieved (and pleasantly surprised) to see you working on this mod again :D

Considering that this is the main modding section only MSFC staff have that ability.

Looking much better, also feel free to use the MSFC attachment feature it's free and has unlimited space.

Much improved I'd say, although I'd like to ask:

Are the pylons supposed to be that long? I know it's partly due to aesthetics but it'd be pretty vulnerable to attacks.

Thats y they have the heavy raised armor. Ill also add a heavy turret to each pylon.

Yea, now that you mention it, I can see how a thicker frame can make it work.

It's probably the angle of the shot which got me thinking. At first glance it looked like wings. :D

A rough guide:

TOSFleetscale.jpg

A rough guide (the 2 fleet pics are not to scale with each other. Its best to look at the TOS Columbia and the TNS Columbia been about the same size in order to scale TOS to TNS):

Hello:
Wow, I haven't seen this scaling before, it looks very good, I love how the tos ships look like. And I also love how TNS Colonials are gaining more uniformity in the designs.

My only nitpick is that the Valkyie is much smaller than that, in fact, it is the smallest battlestar that can be made because it's flight pods are barely able to support shuttles (the biggest ship in the scaling like that of Fighters), with 740 meters lenght.

But even if the scaling is corrected, due to the Valkyrie been a very modern ship, it can still have a high place in the techtree :) .

Yeah, the valkyrie is about the same size as the Cygnus, meaning a little longer than the flight pods on the Mercury. Mine aren't quite that small, but they are small.

If you are interested score, I made a halfway decent(non canonical) texture for that Berzerker that matches the colombia. Not quite the same model but I believe the textures would work. The textures on the engine section are a bit blown up, but you can have it if you want anyway.

Thanx for the offer on the beserk but I have plenty of Colonial ships (even enough for a extra ship pack). As for the Cylon fleet, thats the 1 that needs redoing. I have some done and will post pics soon enough.

I like it. Battlestar Galactica isn't really my thing (though i loved the original series when it was aired) but i like how the model looks.

Texture uniformity is rather important cosmetically for a mod such as Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica. Considering that all ships are built from the same source (i.e. species) having them match is while not going to effect gameplay, it will effect how one looks at the mod, how they perceive it and how they enjoy it. SO even if you're using different textures you I would recommend you try and get them to match, re-do the Cygnus to match the Columbia, the Berserk to match the Mercury etc.

I do my own textures but I understand many can't do textures so it's import to try and alter the existing textures or do a cut and paste of the other ship's textures onto the ship you're altering. Whatever it takes and you'll be surprised how much better it looks.

The Bezerk textures are taken from the original model by Charles Oines ( I will darken them a little) so they are canon to the show. As for the Cgnus It will be a love or hate ship. Iv seen it ingame amd it works well with the other models.

Chili, where did u get a size of 740m for a Valk? Every where I look has it down at between 1000m - 1200m.

Ok, these are the only Cylon capital ships I have for now. I will start on another in the next few days but after that my ideas run low (TOS ships based on Chilis work):

TOS Baseship:

TOS Attackstar:

Ok, Just done the math and I will need to make 4 TOS and 3 TNS Cylon ships to balance the sides enough :( Im sure it can be done though. Im also looking for someone who knows how to make bump map textures if anyone knows of anyone :)

The FO devs can, but in my experience, it always looks better if you do it yourself, simply running a bumpmapping filter on your texture to make it look more 3d. The game does not do a great job.

a bump mapping filter? Not sure what that is. The only way I know how to add a bump map is with a sep texture file added in 3ds max under the bump texture tab.

I don't know how it works in other programs, but in gimp you can bumpmap an entire texture by going to the filters/map/bumpmap and then you can adjust the settings to how you like. It works very well over all and is a lot simpler, but I am not entirely sure how it is done in a2 with the separate textures. I know the FO devs use them on FO stock ships though.

I know, it was them who told me how they do it, just dont know how to make the bump texture though. if that was done I could install it. Is gimp a free program?
