It seems this week has been Intrepid galore, first Dan's awesome retexture of P81's Intrepid now this.

This model was originally a SFC3 model and was exported to A2 by Ryan and Fhares. I really liked the model (which for a time was being used in ZH I believe) but found 2700+ pollies for a light cruiser to be insane. Well I set out to change that, my modelling skills are very poor but over the last few days have increase quite a bit due to the Dominion stations work I have been doing for the TNG mod I am making.

Well back to the Intrepid, I used the DirectX tools in milkshape to get it low as possible, as always with them I lowered it as low as I could without any mesh damage. But as usual some of the textures were screwed up. Instead of simply retexturing the screwed up texture part (which I initally attempted but didn't work) I did a partical rebuild using the original part as a guide. The part I am refering to is the platform where the shuttle bay sits on.

Anyway after much regrouping, duplicating, retexturing and what not I got the end result. A good looking Intrepid class at 1625 pollies that uses 3 512 texture maps (done by Ryan).

I was wanting a lower poly count but I am happy with the result none the less. Getting more than a 1000 pollies off the model I think was a good effort for myself personally. I have yet to get permission to release this but if I can it will be included in the MSFC Dom Mod and if requested released here. If I can't get permission I will convert the SFC3 model and remap the textures myself and copy over the work I have done on this model.

SHe looks good. Question exactly what is the procces you poly reducing with the direct X tools I've tried working with it anuseally wind up with misshapen usless lumps.

Yes the direct x tools can really make a mess of the model and it all depends on the exact model on how well it works. Some models like this one had very little mess ups but in others I get things that resemble a torn apart garbage scowl rather than a starship.

I simply use a trial and error system and scale it back to a poly count I want. I then undo it and depending on the outcome I either go smaller (say instead of 1500 I try 1300 or 1400) or larger (1700 etc) and continue this trial and error method until I get a result and poly count I can live with. Then it's just a matter of texture and mesh edits if they are required which in most cases is the case.

So basically it's all guess work though a bit of feel and intuition comes in handy after the first attempt.

ill be hoenst, im not a huge fan of the texture, having said that, its better than i could do lol. but anyway, great job on the poly reduction, on a model that "small" it must have been hard to get rid of stuff without compromising th e look of the ship.

just shows why ur the boss! lol

It was actually a lot easier than it looks, at least for this model it was. It isn't perfect, there are a few errors I still need to correct and others that no doubt I will never spot but I am happy with the end result. Not bad for someone who has little to no modelling skills.

Looks good so far, though I'd alter the texture on the deflector dish so that the outside bit is blue as in the show, apart from that it looks great :)

I am doing extensive texture modifications to the textures as well. I have yet to look into the deflector but I will look into your suggestion soon.

Indeed it does look pretty awesome Majestic. :)

Thanks Trekie.

I remember this ship. I was going to use her in Zero Hour a long time ago, and I reduced a copy for myself.. I don't know what I managed to reduce the copy too, though I know it was under 2700 polies.

I remember this because I showed Ryan a pic of the ship when he was helping out with the project, he then decided he'd find the ship himself, and release it - something I wasn't too happy about, think we had words too, but yeah, I decided shortly after that, not to include the Intrepid, though I've since changed my mind.

You've done her justice Majest :) Congrats.

I do remember reading about that dispute on A2Files, it's nice to know what really happened as I can understand now why you were a little upset over that. Thanks Ash it was the most extensive model I have poly reduced, though it's Majestic not Majest. The latter are my RPG characters ;)

Texture looks a little on the side of blue-- I was always taken aback after seven seasons of TNG how anemic Voyager always seemed to look.... kind of a soft grey. But it's a distinction without a difference when the model looks THAT good. Well done, Majest. Looking forward to getting this one. :D

Since that screenshot I made the textures grey, much better in my opinion. I just need to get around to finalizing the model. ;)

Ahem, as you can probably remember (especially if you scroll up and read my previous post), I did say that I once had this model, of which was reduced by myself, for myself..

Anyway, to get to the point. Found an old CD earlier (spent some of today having a spring clean so to speak). Anyhow, on that CD, was my version of this Intrepid Class, along with a few other old ZH stuff.

On that note, first thing I did (after remembering this thread), was to check the poly count. Majestic, you have your version at 1625 polygons, with three 512x512 texture sets.

The version I have stands at 1159 polygons, though has six 512x512 texture sets. You are welcome to have her if you wish. Maybe you could use your textures and my mesh or something?

Well if you have no intentons of using it for Zero Hour any more by all means send it to me and when I get around to it I will look at the two models and see what I can do with them.
