Mind sharing that picture? I've not seen any Useless Class that resembles a Galaxy..

The U class is a TMP era dreadnought with downward swept warp pylon and "Cadillac finned" warp nacelles. The boom or plyon connecting the secondary and primary hulls is open and not a single solid structure. Above the primary hull is a floating arc or boom supporting a very large photon torpedo bay. I don't really think it resembles the Galaxy at all unless this is a redesigned ship with a differnt configuration.

Hmm, gotta agree with Spanky on this one.

Plus, I think given that most Federation ships share the same "hull with a saucer on the front and two nacelles sticking up out the back" shape, it's not really possible to single out the Ulysses as being an inspiration for the Galaxy.

Even in their jobs, they are different. The Ulysses is a Dreadnought, a weapons-heavy design for primary use in battle. The Galaxy is an Explorer, with most of it's hull space filled with laboratories, civilians, and support craft hangars.

Well, I think it looks closer to an Excelsior or a Constitution than a Galaxy. ;)

It only resembles the Galaxy from that shot angle. At that high of an angle you can't view how the pylons are downward swept or the open space in the boom connecting the primary and secondary hulls. At different angles it looks completely different. I can see how you would think that from this angle though. The connecting boom appears to have the same triangular shape as that of the Galaxy class. But its a competely dissimilar vessel in other respects though.

This may be the finest Freudian slip I've seen in a long time. I'm tellin' Joelt you said that about his favourite Fed ship :p

Seriously, though. You need to actually see the Ulysses class dreadnought to see how utterly un-Galaxy-like it is. The nacelles are bigger in scale to the stardrive, the saucer is round, the saucer support is split in two parts, and the support pylons are straight without the curve. Not to mention the "rollbar".

It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.

:D

I think I would have to say that all Federations "primary" ships are similar, regardless. As Atlantis pointed out, they all have the common features that makes them look "federation". But beyond that, they are each unique.

If anything, the Ulysses was a Fast Battleship version of the Constitution. Doesn't look much like a Galaxy IMHO

it looks familiar to the galaxy class
I personally do not see the resemblance.

He already knows. I've given it that 'nickname' when talking about it to him in the past. Feel free to remind him though. ;)

If that tag doesn't work (can never seem to get the syntax right without copy/paste) then can a moderator fix it.
It worked for me. :)
