A couple of days ago I bought on DVD the Starfleet TV series which I only heard about before.
Despite the name this has nothing to do with Star Trek.
It is a Japanese puppet series that takes place in the year 2999. Originally aired between October 4, 1980 and March 28, 1981 on Fuji TV in Japan and it was originally called X-Bomber and created by Go Nagai.
The series was renamed Starfleet when it was dubbed in English for broadcast in the UK.
Reading from the DVD sleeve the influences for Starfleet are Star Wars, Anime and Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds. In fact Gerry Anderson is on the documentary of Starfleet included on the DVD release.
