You know, I've probably seen a bit more of the fandom than most here, having grown up with it. And the truth is, I don't care if they have Shatner or Nimoy or neither-- or a reanimated Jimmy Doohan, for that matter!

The truth is, anything that brings Trek back to life is GOOD TREK. We have to accept it as our only hope right now. It's better than nothin'.

But I honestly have to believe that they'll do right by this moment they have. JJ Abrams' vision is an open question mark-- I've gone from being an advocate of his quality work to considering him one of the most overrated producer/directors in Hollywood. I've watched multiple seasons of Alias, the first season of Felicity, and heard enough ranting about Lost to constitute two seasons' viewing. And I've seen most of his major film works, except for Cloverfield. (Same applies to Transformers, which was scripted by the same guys who wrote this script.)

I think we'll see a respectable film, paying homage to a classic franchise, but will it be enough to motivate new generations of fans into buying or renting the DVDs and watching such classic original Trek episodes as "Plato's Stepchildren" and "Turnabout Intruder"? Probably not.

More critically than that, will it persuade Paramount to produce a new original Trek series, or new games? Or for that matter, will it do anything to enhance the existing prestige of one of television's oldest and most appreciated franchises? Not a chance.

In fact, I'm TERRIFIED of this series doing well enough to merit a full original-series remake. Sooner or later you have to ask yourself how much longer Paramount can milk the cow before it's worth more for the beef.... :D

I think despite my widespread criticism of Enterprise (it would have worked if it was the first Trek series, as on its own it was good, it just didn't fit as a supposedly Pre-TOS show), the Mirror Universe shows did show that it is very possible to still use the original TOS uniforms and styling and still make an enjoyable, non-cheesy piece of action. I don't think there is any need to change what has gone before, except for updating the CGI, TOS Remastered Style (i.e so we don't get AMT/Ertl models on bits of string and dodgy looking guys in rubber suits as aliens).

Simply put, keep the style the same, just update it to modern CGI standards. As I said, think Trials and Tribulations, ENT-Mirror Universe and TOS Remastered. Or even, crappy acting apart, think New Trilogy Star Wars. Okay so the whole whiney Anakin/Padme "less chemistry than a lump of lead in liquid gold" thing was pants, but stylistically, they did capture the same feel as the originals, far more so than TMP or TNG (even though I love TMP, it was a big jump stylistically from TOS)

i just hope that the new movie isn't like ENT and totally junk the franchise. i'd like an armada 3 for god's sake. and A3 that includes the talent from these sites too. where activision supports KA2 or something like that.

i think that there's so much already riding on this movie, that it's failed already. BUT, i would love to be proved wrong. no i'm not sitting on the edge of my seat going "ooh new movie, can't... WAIT. Must... BE strong!" i will just watch it when it comes out.

Putting all on-screen canon aside, I think CrazyFrog's point he made in one of these threads about a alternative reality starting after Voyager stop that 20th century guy going back to the 29th century works extremely well. Due to the 29th century surviving, the Temporal cold War came about and thus Enterprise and the new movie in all new style ships.

If that is actually explained in the movie at the beginning or something then his could be a believable restart of the Star Trek franchise that all fans, weather hardcore die-hards or like me open minded more than casual fans can accept.

After CrazyFrog and I had that conversation in that thread I am now looking forward to the movie and after discussing it with a few people around my area we agree it makes perfect sense I just think that the producers should make a point of explaining it, even in roll down text or something at the beginning of the movie to explain this to the fans. Doing this would allow more fans, especially those die hard lackeys that always get into the fights with Star Wars lackeys, to accept the new movie while still keeping all the series canon.

please sir, please like our movie. it's not the same as you're used to. nor will it have continuing familiar faces. but it's the same as before just refreshed. eeehhh.. i don't know majestic. that was another reason i didn't like ENT was that everything older that dirt before TOS looked out of the 24th century. i will go watch it, but i'm not waiting for it.

No matter what they do some with love it, others hate it and others will say so so. I suppose that happens with every movie, I just hope fans will realise that of the movie doesn't get good ratings/views at the movies and DVD sales afterwards Star Trek may not come back for a very long time as if the studios and companies don't make money off it it ain't worth their time, effort and money.

I am atleast interested to see how they explain it. Star Trek is big enough that they could take many angles. It would be cool if they used mine though. LOL

I don't think star trek 11 is going to be a great movie.

I'm sure that paramount will kill TOS with this movie, because how in the world will you make a movie about a sci-fi series that ran in the 60s with the same feeling.

The actors that played in TOS have played the characters so long that they have become icons for the characters for them. I'm sure they will find great actors, but they won't have characteristics the old actors had.

Also the equipment they'll be using will probaply be modernized which would seem very odd if you compare them with the original equipment. For example the last star trek serie enterprise which was pre-TOS had sometimes even thinner equipment than Kirk had. This annoyed me.

But enough complaining from my side what do you guys think?

I'm really anticipating the film, at least they're still making one......

I wish they didn't have to delay it due to the strike, but alas they did. To me it will be easier to accept anything they do with this new film than what went on with Enterprise. The Enterprise series to me was more or less a way to explain the impact the Enterprise-E's visit to Earth made. No one ever mentioned the Xindi, the NX, the Temporal Cold War, or anything like that in any of the other series until Enterprise came around. The only things mentioned in any way were the beginning of the Federation and the Romulan Wars. The Eugenics Wars were pointed out as well but that had taken place I think some time before Enterprise (shows you how much I know of Star Trek history, of course when you miss too many episodes there tends to be gaps).

The actor for Shatner will no doubt be no William Shatner, but I hope everyone in that film carries the roles correctly and hopefully there aren't any major gaps. I think ST11 will turn out better than Nemesis did. In Nemesis you had yet another android claiming to be another one of Data's brothers, a mirror for Picard (apparently Sela had taken DNA from Picard or something, or whatever happened upon their meeting years earlier). Then the Enterprise ended up with way too many decks. What was it, deck 32 they said on Nemesis when I think the ship only has like what, 24 or 28 decks? And the fight between Riker and Shinzon's Viceroy ended with Shinzon's Viceroy falling like 200 feet to his death...from deck 32. Apparently between Insurrection and Nemesis they had increased the dimensions of the Enterprise by about two times (which would make it larger than the Excalibur class...which is simply ridiculous; if that was the case, why not make a new ship). It's like instead of adding sections on to a house you simply alter its dimensions so it's twice as large yet the bridge and engineering rooms are still somehow the same size as they were before.

Anyway, ST11 will probably be produced with the knowledge and understanding of what went tragically wrong with Enterprise, Nemesis, some episodes of DS9 and Voyager and so on. I am hoping for the best and expecting another Generations at worst (though I liked Generations a lot).

I hope they don't try and explain Enterprise by saying that the temporal cold war has changed what we know TOS as being. Thats almost as bad as the gold ol' soap opera "it was all a dream" sequence. Star Trek definately will have jumped the shark if they do that.

As for Activision supporting KA2, nah, I haven't made her buggy enough for Activision to consider releasing as a game. :D
