I'd just like to point out this new space combat RTS, called Sins of a Solar Empire.
YouTube - Sins of a Solar Empire Game Trailer

It looks like it is a cross between Armada, homeworld, and civilizations. It slated to be released both in the EU and N.Am countries on Feb. 4th of this year (just about a week away actually). It's for release on the PC. I have not checked to see if or how moddable it will be. But it looks to be capable of very very large multi-player online games. That, and a in-progress game can be saved... That'll be a first. Anyways, it sounds awesome, and I plan to buy it sometime shortly after it's released.

I will share my experience and opinion on the game here in a week or 3 after I get it, play it, and can make up a proper review.

One can check it out at thier site:

Interesting, looks a lot like homeworld in my opinion and I never got the hang of that game.

Actually ingame multi saves have been around for ages. You can do one multi save in A2, the problem is getting the same people back together. I don't think I have ever managed it, because you always just play which whomever is available at that time.

I have been watching this for ages because its on the Stardock mailing list and its only improved through the betas. I doubt I will end up getting it in the end though, I don't really have time for games now.

Hmmm it definitely looks awesome, probably one I'll buy, just not right away... I loved the Homeworld games, especially the first one, and this looks just as good if not better...

I myself have tried beta 3 (a friend of mine has pre-ordered it and was kind enough to let me have a quick game - which lasted 4 hours) and must say that I'm going to get this game.

Put simply - its like homeworld expanded. The basic gameplay is centred around a sort of Rise of Nations style - planets represent territories and you have to conquer others.

When the ships fight then it looks quite good; not as good as homeworld 2 but still better than stock A2.

Essentially, its a long and boring game. It takes ages to research stuff and build a large enough fleet to do anything. Strangely though, its addictive to a degree I haven't seen since Neverwinter Nights.

Graphics wise, I could run it on a 128mb graphics card and a Gig of memory with a 3.07Ghz processor at full.

In short; I'd recommend that if you liked Galactic Civilizations - enjoyed Homeworld and have some time then you'd likely enjoy this.

Of course, I've only played a beta with one race and that wasn't fully made. Who knows what the actual game will be like?

Well it seems like it would be a fun game, at least for me. I like a resource and research rich game. That, combined with room for massive fleet battles makes it a game I have at least got to try.

So far, everything I hear about this game is music to my ears.

I didn't realise on could save a multiplayer armada game in progress... I'll have to check it out.

Ive got it quite good so far though i think the ships are two small and theres not enough focus on capital ships.
On the official forums there are quite a lot of good looking mods, stargate, babylon 5, star trek etc. Does any1 know whether there is a milkshape exporter for it.

My apologize for bringing back an old topic, but I've got to say that I am in love with this game! It is a lot like Homeworld though with a bit different gameplay as in you can jump across different worlds and "space junk" instead of traveling through regular space like you do in the Homeworld series. And when they say that the games can last a while...they're not kidding  The current one I'm working on now has last about five days total.

The biggest thing I think they could have done better with the game is add at least animations. All of the turrets and extendable launch bays are static, and while in a way it doesn't matter since most of your time is spent zoomed out far enough to keep an eye out for incoming hostiles it would be quite good for eye candy, along with the ships actually coming out of the yards when they're constructed instead of appearing in front of it.

While on the subject of Stargate and Sin of a solar empire, I did give the Stargate Invasion mod permission to use some of my original designs.

My apologize for bringing back an old topic.

I don't see any problem with bringing old topics back with relevant content, I don't see why so many sites do. If we didn't want them they would be deleted or trashed.

This truly is an amazing game! The pirate raids are a tad annoying, every few minutes, setting back any attempts to do any exploring or expansion. But once you figure out how to do it, it's pretty cool.

And the fact that it's quite well moddable is the icing on the cake =D

Looking at how this game is set out, it's very much like what I plan my Blade Runner mod to be. So I am considering making it a mod for this game instead of (or maybe as well as, who knows) Armada.

Hehe, I'll remember that; there are a few old topics here that I'd like to post in, though don't worry I won't become a forum Necromancer ;)

True, especially when your ready to send a fleet after a fortified enemy world, though they are quite handy for leveling up Capital ships .

I haven't looked into modding it yet, but already there are a few things that I'd love to tweak with the game.

*Blows off the dust*

Well, it seems my new powerful gaming laptop does not like this game. Or the game does not like my laptop. I installed the game and launched it. After clicking play on the game's launcher, it acts like it is loading but I just get the busy spinning icon. It seems it does not want to load the display. I can't do anything because the computer thinks the game is running. I had to reboot the computer through cntrl+alt+del.

Ive encountered an error where Ill be playing.. and then quit out of the game.. but the game won't close..so when i try to go and play again.. it tells me that its already running

Thanks for the info guys. I went into the settings file and edited it to launch in windowed mode. It seems the issue with the opening cinematic. Once the game launched, I was able to go back into full screen with no issues.

I got a question about the Star Trek Armada 3 mod. Does it change the campaign as well or is it just for quick play and online play? I have already downloaded it but have yet to install it. I was just curious.

So a funny thing happened. I downloaded and installed the Star Trek Armada 3 mod. Went back into the tutorial for a little refresher. Everything was going fine. Took my units to the next planet as instructed and that is where things got a little weird. Coming at me was Miranda class frigates with the Dominion tag on them. My units began engaging and I watched. As the battle raged on I got to thinking that someone should have been defeated by now. So I examined on of the ships and realized that even though it was being shot at by several of my ships, it was not taking any damage. Then I examined one of mine and seen the same thing. The ships were shooting at each other but none was taking any damage and the tutorial could not progress.

Amazing that the tutorial even loaded. It's actually broken. It's recommended that you play the regular Sins tutorial for a game refresher.. the STA3 Tutorial will be removed with the next update

I did indeed turn off the mod so I would be in stock Sins. It is a shame that they will remove the tutorial from the mod though. I think with some work to fix it, it would be a great addition.

I do wan to look into other mods too. I know there is a Star Wars mod that is pretty popular and I wouldn't mind looking into a Babylon 5 mod if there is one available.

ooh wow.. maybe the stock sins tutorial is broken too. What I did was put it on the smallest map possible on the easiest difficulty to learn how to play...

Nah, I turned off the mod after I discovered the glitch.

LOVE Sins. Before STO came out, it was all I played. Now I binge this between bouts of STO and... other games. Finished Horizon Zero Dawn recently, went back to Sins, for kicks. I've actually modded it too... nothing crazy, just replacing and adding ships. But I am particularly pleased with replacing the "stock" orbital hangar for each faction with an armed space station, to act as a mid-level orbital defense platform. Very effective, and not overpowered!

Sins was always on my 'to do list' until one day friends suggest we give the Star Trek Armada 3 mod a try which I'd been pestering them to play with me at our occasional LAN parties for ages.. we became so friggin addicted to Armada 3.. just so good.. then next thing we knew we were trying the Star Wars mods, the Stargate mod, the Mass Effect mod, and we really fell in love with the Halo Sins of The Prophets as that one changed so much of Sins and looks amazing.
