• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

    Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

    We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Ship mods keep crashing game

Playing STA2 and have added multiple ships, stations, and weapons to the game to play with the wide variety of ships from Star Trek. However, there are a few ships, Like Enterprise-G, Prometheus, and others that when I tell a shipyard to build them the game shut down. I am trying to learn about modding but I have a lot to learn. What is going on or what can I do to fix the mods to be able to build them? I have a newer computer but wonder if it is a resolution issue.

Hey, and welcome! :) There are a few different reasons why a modded game crashes. The FO.net Bug / Crash Checklist is a great resource to find the cause: http://guide.fleetops.net/guide/modding/tutorials/bug-crash-checklist

In this case, the most likely cause would be a typo / misspelling in the ship's ODF file, or one of the files included by it. Check the quotation marks in particular, it's easy to forget one.

Welcome.

Terra is spot on in his advice. Look over your ODF files. Additionally I would guess the problem is a missing physic or weapon file that is crashing the game.

If you still need help we will need more info so:

1. I take it that you have successfully modded a completely new ship into the game and everything works fine?
2. Have you down loaded and read the "Westworlds Big Book of Modding"? Lots of good info in there and I still use it from time to time. You can find it here at the bottom of the page. http://armadafiles.com/files/armada-2/tutorials/page-3
3. Does the game crash as soon as you click on the build bottom for your new ship? Or does the ship build and as soon as it completes the game crashes? If you zoom in you can see your ship building in the yard. Or does the game crash after the ship moves? Or does the game crash after the ship fires its weapons?
4. Post a copy of your odf for the Enterprise-G. This way i can look over it and see if something sticks out to me.

Hope this helps. :racoon:

Actually, because I am just learning (real green) I have not done any of the modding myself. They are files from http://armadafiles.com/ that I downloaded and put in the appropriate folders and included the needed lines in the tech folders and sprite files. My current mod I am trying to install but it keeps crashing is the Prometheus one (http://armadafiles.com/files/armada...y-and-future/prometheus-class-mvam-10/details). I tell the yard to build it and it starts building it and right when the ship is coming out as completed the game shuts down.

Ok so your ship builds that means that there isn't a resolution issue. It also means that the Sod and texture files are ok and in the right spot so we don't have to worry about any of this. I thought that you most likely had a missing physic file but if you copied the Prometheus files straight into your game that shouldn't be the problem. If I remember right I had problems with the Prometheus class too, but its been to long ago for me to remember what it was. So what I would recommend you do first is // out the special weapon in the fprometheus.odf file. You want to change the file from this:

//MVAM
weapon4 = "gMVAM_sep"
weaponHardpoints4 = "hp01"

to this:

//MVAM
//weapon4 = "gMVAM_sep"
//weaponHardpoints4 = "hp01"

So what does this do for you? Well by removing the ships ability to split into three parts we can hopefully narrow down where the problem is. This way we limit any problems to just one set of odf files. So try this and then load up the game and see what happens. Then report back and we'll go from there.

Hey Navy I had some more time to look a little closer at the Prometheus downlaods. There are bugs in the 1.0 version of the prometheus files according to the comments. I suggest you download the 1.1 version and follow the install instructions.

This is the version you want. http://armadafiles.com/files/armada...y-and-future/prometheus-class-mvam-11/details

As a side note I try to always download the latest version of a ship. Generally any problems have been fixed in the later updates.

Well done @Hath :clap: I was looking for an updated version, but I didn't have much time and couldn't find anything. Good find.

Thanks for everyone's help. I went in to the ships that I wanted to add and put "//" in front of the weapon sections. then built the ship in the game and it worked. Then one by one, added the weapon till I found the one that killed the game. Then worked on that weapon to make it work.
On a side note, what do you have to do to be allowed to download from MSFC site? I find things that I would like to try but the download button is still replaced with "No permission to download"?
thanks

Thanks. I really must have missed that section.
