Hi all um here is just a thoery (in universe) as to why you never sore shields on ships during the battles on DS9.

On the last episode of season 2, we sore the a galaxy class ship get ripped to pieces by a dominion attack ship. the captain of the galaxy says that the dominions poleron torpedoes are getting through the shields and instructs his crew to reroute power from the shields to the weopons.

now this got me wondering, maybe all the ships did the same during all the following battles with the dominion. either way its a possible thoery. anyway Id love to here any other thouery as to why shields were never used. thats in universe thoerys though as I already have a good idea why they didn't in reality -Budget- lol.

A good theory yes, and one that would work. I would have thought though, that in fleet engagements, they'd have been equally as worried about their shields as well as their firepower. Starfleet had time to figure out how Dominion weapons work, heck, Sisko even captured a Dominion ship (one that crashed on a planet).

I'd still go with the theory that the captians simply forgot to turn their shields on. ;)

i can see it now

"Right we are going into battle... have we got everything? Ship.... Check, Weapons.... Check, Crew.... Check, Packed Lunch.... Check, Right! off we go!"

Tbh i was thinking the same thing as you LP. Why bother wasting the power if they are useless?

but i thought they after the Death of the Odessy (correct ship?) they would have tried some deffence. or it could simply be that by the time we get to see the ships shooting there were no shields left?

Ya although Now that i have watched a few more episodes You can see that The defiant has shields on, not visualy but it is stated that Shields are failing thus they must have them on. You know what I think they do have them on but that Fed ships are made out to be so crap that a couple of Cardasion Compressers can destroy them. Stupid lol seeing that Cardasion ships are made of paper realy. ah well we all know the real reason so I'm just gonna stick with my first assumption iut made more sense lol

The hull-hugging shields I believe didn't came into use before Nemesis as we have no reference to such shields prior to that movie.

And if you think about it, almost no ships in the entire series have we seen shields on (meaning we have not seen any shield flares then they were hit). If we go after the fact that only ships we see shield flares on have shields, then over 90 % of all ships in the entire series (all of Star Trek) has no shields. And that you know is not correct.

Thus I say that even though you don't see shield flare, the shields could still be there and online. ;)

PS.: The only ships I have seen shield flares on in the entire ST series are: Enterprise-D, Enterprise-E, Voyager, Defiant, another Defiant, an Akira, a couple of Bird of Preys, Scimitar, that unknown enemy in the episode "Silent Enemy" (ENT), a Borg Cube, a Borg Sphere and the Delta Flyer.

PPS.: I have not seen the entire series, so bare with me if there are more ships we have seen shield flares on. :)

I suppose so lol. Still it just doesn't explain as to how ships get blown to peices by one shot of a cardy compresser beam. I mean putting aside the Sitak and Majestic there were tons of other ships that would have lasted longer. unless of course the Dominion gave the technology to the Cardasions to impliment there weapons technology. Well either way the series Rocked in my oppinion and well a few battle seens that were a tad unrealistic is no biggy

Defiant's shields were activated during the war, they just didnt flare when hit but i didnt see any hull damage so maybe they just pulled the shield bubble as close as they could to the hull . Not hull tight shields but a tight bubble to conserve power that can be used for weapons :yum:

Or the older ships proberly didnt even bother to activate them, too long to modify the shields and its kill or be killed afterall . Why waste power on defences that wont do much good when you can throw it into the Weapons and kill the enemy before they kill you !

Tbh i didnt really care about the lack of shields in the fights, more destruction made me happy :excited:

I will admit that the original reason I got DS9 was to watch the battle sceens lol. (at that point didn't own any trek or other Sci-Fi) and I was really pleased with what i sore during the battle (save the mirand's getting blown up at every possible moment in time, are they just trying to get a message across -We are an out dated pile of scrap mettal- lol, maybe not but it looked that way)

Thats also why I got season 6 first. but as you get into it I just found it better even after watchinmg every episode of Voyager and TNG. plus it has the Cary's and O'Brian lol (O'brian must suffer -the writers always made such an episode every season lol- )

but tanks all for the debate lol

its all to do with tuneing the sheilds to deflect energy or matter, thats why the jemhadar were able to ram the odessey while her sheilds were up (cos they were tuned to defelct weapons blasts not ships!)
