I would like some new models of the Species 9341 mother and entity for Super Classic. They're not critical to the 1.0 release (I can use the original Activision models if need be) but I would really like something with more than a dozen faces and a 256x256 texture. Animations and multiple variants would be nice, but not necessary.

If you would like to split up the work, that would be fine. For instance, if somebody wants to model and someone else wants to make the texture, go for it.

Hello:
I remember that some time ago, Blade/Apoclaydon wanted me to try to make new Species 9341 models, so your topic brought back those memories  :D .

Fully-looking organic models are tricky and hard to make, but at some point I was thinking to redo the Mother and Entities following the A1 ingame models as well as the original concept pic.

So, if you have time (like 200 years  ... sorry, but my modding to-do list is huge), I can try to make my own version of them.

Sure. :) Like I said, they're not critical so take your time. They're only in one Borg mission and one or two multiplayer maps. If anybody else wants to try too, go ahead. I really think that having multiple models would be great for the organic look.

Perhaps ask TUN he has done some organic models for Sigma (with animation) and may be able to help. He has an account here on MSFC if I recall.

Hello:
That is a good idea since I cannot do animations (but I know people that can). But I think you have nothing to lose and lots to gain if you ask TUN.

Ok, despite my best efforts I'm curious. I don't think I recall Species 9341, got any images?

yeah i to wanted to remake these once but the animation of those tentacles would be a real pain, even in 3ds max ;)

Looking at the original concept image for the mother craft it actually looks like the spines dweren't supposed to move as they seem to thick. I wonder if that was the original way the models were in game but someone at activision thought it would be more visual for them to move??

Besides. Who's to say they have to have animation seeing as most of species 8472 don't have any animation on their ships?? and yes. I know this is supposed to be a space based entity, but even the crystaline entity didn't have any moving parts. it was just implied that it was a sentient being.

Just a thought.

They do seem rather rigid on the concept mother, but the concept entity seems to have two tentacles forward and the rest trailing. That style may work well for a non animated entity model.

TUN did express interest in modeling them in the PM, but said he may be a while as he is busy.

Also, nice to see you again, MAP.:D

Hello:
I agree with Cabal: It is always good to see you are still around MaP  .

As for Species 9341, I do think the new models have to be make closer to the original concept image. I guess the smaller entity's limbs could be good to grab on asteroids, ships, sibling entities or their mothers. I suppose they all could have some animation, but I guess they could still look good without it.

Got bored on my day off. Yours to use if you want it.
Critter_small.png

Includes .obj and .ms3d files (2240 polys) . Not uv mapped or textured (I have enough things to texture :p )

That looks fantastic, kjc! I'm going to hardpoint it, throw together a basic texture, and take some screenshots.

And here they are. I didn't try to UV map it and it really shows. =/ The texture was also thrown together pretty quickly. The green things are supposed to be veins.

I need to do more work on the texture and UVs, but the model itself is great. I'll say again, though, I would like to have multiple models, so if anyone else wants to make one, go for it.

Not bad if I do say so myself :D

I hate doing veins, they're stupidly hard to get looking right. On my Wraith ships I resorted to drawing a spiderweb of single pixel lines, making sure that they were continuous and branched in one direction, I think I used two colours for the larger ships so there were two layers of interweaving veins.
For my Whitestar I took a different approach and "cut" grooves into the texture. There's a description and rar'd psd example on page 31 of my thread. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs or anything as these actually look quite good already, but just throwing out ideas.

I may take a crack at the big jobbie when I get fed up of my current round of texturing (probably tomorrow morning :lol2: ).
