• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

Natural Disaster in Newcastle

Newcastle on Australia's east coast and the home of Jess and myself on Friday and Saturday had a natural disaster to the same level of the Newcastle earthquake back in 1989.

It hit on Friday afternoon roughly at 12pm. It started when a tanker ship (Pasha Bulker) in Newcastle's harbour got bogged on Friday due to the severe storms, on Friday afternoon excessive rain and wind storms flooded much on newcastle including my own workshop in Broadmeadow.

That night it hit again with far more power, much of Newcastle and the Central Coast was flooded, power out to more than 100,000 homes (thats why I haven't been on) and currently the death toll stands at 9, with several of them being children. Winds were as strong as 100km/h and waves reaching 8 meters in height.

This all has happened on the Queen's Birthday long weekend with many preparing to go away, taffic and massive road closures as well as people going out to see the Pasha Bulker has caused massive traffic jams in the Newcastle region.

We are lucky to not get any damage, just lost some food in the fridge and freezer.

We now have power which was the major problem for us, you don't know how much you rely on it till you go without for several days.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to get online. I am glad to hear you and Jess are ok. You are right about electricity. You never realize how much you use it until it's off for a while.

Oh wow, I am glad to hear that you two are doing ok, and my prayers are with those who were devastated by Mother Nature's bipolar moment.

I hope things are going better by now in your area. Don't you guys feel too alone with all this weather problems. Here where I live, it's almost a daily heavy Thunderstorm or ten. Each one brings strong force winds, and a big chance of twisters. Lately, the storms blow in after midnight too. Most people around here are sleeping at that time.

oh dear lord, i'm glad you're all okay. i DO know the power thing. a couple years back the power grid in the northeastern u.s. died. it's the STRANGEST sight to be living in a city and not seeing stars one night. then the next it's like civilization died and there's the milky way. it was like that for 3 days for me. plus i work at a hospital AND i was at work when it happened. i had a nice 14hour shift that night. but yeah... no power is insane:yuck:

Looks quite bad. I hope nobody was injured too badly. Going to be a real pain to get that Tanker off the beach though.

I know exactly what thats like. You think thats crazy, two weeks ago a tornado went over my house. Last week one threw my neighbours car on top of his house. Sucks. Here in a day or two another storm system is coming in and it already looks scary.

Tornadoes are not good, we are very lucky here as we rarely get them.

At first i thought you meant Newcastle in the UK .

On a more serious note, i'm glad to hear that you and Jess are ok, and were lucky to have very little damage to your home :)

At first i thought you meant Newcastle in the UK .

Nope, Newcastle in AU. Many Australian cities where named after UK ones, the states were even named after UK people and locations such as the states:

Victoria (After the Queen of the time, 1770's)
New South Wales (After Wales, the new Wales of the South)
Queensland (Name is obvious)

A little bit of trivia for you all.
