• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Does running it with A2 cause any game lag?

In a heavy battle, you'll need to have plenty of RAM to prevent lag. That, and a good CPU. If your running an older system, then avoid large battles.

Mine's fairly new, and I've run programs in the background with A2 before. I'll have a look at the programs free trial, and see if it causes too much lag for the vids to be of any quality, if not then I'll pay the licence fee.

Thanks for the link Syf :)

There are also other programs that do the same thing. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but they are there. One may venture to look for a freeware program that does the same.

It's not an illegal program... maybe banned (though I don't see why anyone would ban recording one's own screen). Fraps is a simple desktop recording program, just a bit more advanced than the screen-capture/print-screen functions built into windows. I do recommend one has plenty of RAM when using a program to record videos from whats on your screen.

Fraps is not a free program mind you. Currently costs $37. They allow people to test it out with a typical trial period, in which one can record upto 30 seconds, and embeds a watermark on the top of the videos. The full paid version doesn't have these limits or watermarks.

It's banned (illegal..I don't mean illegal as contraband, but illegal as in you get caught using it, you will recieve a "blackmark" on your account)((Runescape is strict about these things, they super strick on RWT, cause people would sell accounts for real cash on ebay)) because people normaly will post the vids on youtube, don't ask me, company is based in Cambridge, England.

I only played RuneScape for a short time, and yeah I'd heard about the whole selling accounts for money thing, another reason why I stopped playing, it all seemed a little dodgy over there.

I am still using the trial version, there is no time limit on how long you can use it for, at least there wasn't when I first downloaded the program. :)

I have experienced it with other freeware programs, but never much at all with fraps. I just got to see about forking out the $37 so that I can get rid of the watermarks.

There is also a program called Snag-it. It does the same thing as Fraps, and is $39.95 for a single user. I'm not sure about it's performance, as I haven't played with it. But I do have a copy. Perhaps I should take it for a spin and see.

Well...not that I complaining or anything...but DUH!!! Seriously man, I think that might be a good idea since we're all talking about it.

Well that's the procrastinator in me "getting around to it". It, along with other programs I want to play with, just it takes some time getting there.:)

Ok new word....Physics?

Physics are used in armada 2 to set the way in which a ship moves through space, they use the same file format as most coding files in armada 2 (.ODF) and set things like how quickly/sharply a vessel can turn, how long it has to accelerate for before entering warp e.t.c.

Through careful programming of the physics files, you can get a ship to move as it would on TV, or how the real laws of physics would cause it to move, and thus make it look more realistic ingame. E.g, a large battleship would turn slower than a small scout/fighter craft would.

Also, there are coding commands that allow you to set what physics files a ship uses in the game.

Hope this helps :)

Lightmaps = Literally, a map for lighting. Its what makes the ships in KA2 and other mods have glowing engines, windows etc.

Phong Lighting = A lighting method for A2 that, when used with weapons and objects that have a certain few lines of code, "backlight" models. Namely, a phaser that is yellow will emit a yellow glow on the hull of the firing vessel. A red photon that shoots out from a torpedo launcher with make anything near it glow red. Its a form of dynamic lighting.

Well i think this is the place i should ask this ... so ... basicly i'm new to modding armada 2 ( i've just learned how to play with the odf files :p and got an ideea about some other aspects of the game ), and i just can't find the way to add a new specie ( adding models, textures, techtree, gui and this stuff i did but where do i declare the specie ? ). Tks. Hope someone can explain in less master-modder terms :) .

Look in your game's 'odf' folder, then in the 'other' folder. There are six race files, fed.odf, kling.odf, rom.odf, borg.odf, card.odf, and species8472.odf. These are your basic 6 race files.

Now, on to creating a new race.
For the following example I'll use the Chodak, but for whatever race you want to make, replace "chodak" with whatever you want.

Make a copy of fed.odf and name it chodak.odf
Edit the lines in chodak.odf to match what you want. Most importantly are the following lines

name = "chodak" (this is also the name you should put in each ship's odf file to link it to this race)

instantActionSlot = 6 (this number is where in the IA menu it will be. On a stock install, choose 6, as 0-5 are already being used).

Once you've done all this and got the numbers how you want, go into races.odf (also in the /odf/other folder), and add it in, like this:

race8 = "chodak.odf"
(race0-7 are already taken in the stock file. You can swap these around with no problems, of course. That goes for the Instant Action Slot numbers too, so long as you make sure you don't have duplicates).

numberOfRaces = 9 (if it was 8 before, change it to 9)
(By the way I am guessing as to the numbers, i don't actually have Armada installed at the moment).

If you need any more help, or have any questions, send me a message or email, I'd be happy to help if i can. =)

If in further need check out the download section in the Armada 2 misc folder, there is Westworld Big Book of Modding and is the best guide to modding both Armadas and includes a tutorial on how to add a new race to the game as well.
