Well I recently got some modeling software called Blender. And while I almost freaked out when I first got a look at all the toolbars and options (and thats only the visable one hee), however I put my fears behind me so to speak and dived into the oh so detailed tutorials (pdf's, videos all the stuff I could find) and I am now proud to present my first Star Trek model.

Now while I do realise that it is no way near a masterpeice I believe that if i continue im sure I'll get better.

So um here they are:

first render.jpg

first render2.jpg

first render3.jpg

first render4.jpg

The next two: I removed the smooth option so it shows the model more clearly (well thats what I hoped to achieve anyway) so here they are:

first render5.jpg

first render6.jpg

Well, anyhow: These are just my first attempts.
I was trying to make a Constitution class but its not a great comparison. I'm just glad it looks at least a bit Federation, hehe.

Well feel free to leave any feedback or what not all. Comments are greatly desired hehe. Thanks for reading and I'll post more soon (hopefully better)

P.S. I'm sorry but they're all thumbnails. I'im not anygood at posting pics, but just clicking on them shows the same picture anyway. So it doesn't make much of a difference (I hope)....:p

La Patience, this is not meant as any offense, but please make sure that you stick to proper spelling, capitalisation of letters and grammar. Partially it makes things very hard to read, if you do not follow these rules...
If you need any help with spell checker software etc, you can contact the site staff at any time. - EA

Just keep practising. If you are interested in programs that are a little easier to learn and to get into modelling with, you should try Milkshape 3d, which is as a 30-day shareware available in the MSFC download section.

Indeed that looks a lot like my first attempt though it was a Daedalus class, which I never finished and actually only recently went back and completed started from scratch which is now available to all in the downloads section for Armada 2.

I have to agree with Intrepid, try Milk-shape 3D if you are having difficulties with Blender. Milk-shape as Intrepid said is free for 30 days then it's only a small free of around $25 for a lifetime registration key.

It's also quite easy to learn with.

Just keep at it like I am doing and you will surprise yourself at what you can do.

Let me add to the mentioned price.

In US dollars, Milkshape 3D is now $35. But in Euros, it's a bit less because of the currency market.

But I agree with Majestic and EAS. Milkshape is an easier rendering tool to use. However be warned, it is intended to be a game model level renderer. Meaning it only is useful for making models that are intended for games. Called "Low Polygon" modeling (no more than 20,000 polygons is recommended, or else you risk a sever crash with lose of the model ...on most PCs. This is also effected by the PC, which a high end system will allow up-to 60,000 polygons without a crash). Blender on the other hand, even though it is 1000 times more complex, is capable of rendering models with millions of polygons, so hence is capable of a much better looking model. But these blender made models are not recommended for games.

Now about the model... For a first timer using blender, that is great so far.

But nice first attempt its a hell of a lot better than my first trek ship.

Well here is my next batch of models I have done. The first two models are just some I did while exploring the program but the last is a full on attempt.

The first one is my attempt to model an Excelsior.

excelsior attempt.jpg

excelsior attempt. in space.jpg

excelsior attempt. in space2.jpg

excelsior attempt.jpg2.jpg

The next model is my attempt to make the saucer section of a miranda class but its incomplete right now.

The next model is not star trek related. it is an Atgar laser turret off of star wars 5 empire strikes back. I realy tried with this model and I believe it is my best so far.

Well that is all the models i have done over the past week. any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'll post some more when ive made them ok.

The SW Laser Cannon looks great, the Miranda just needs the nacelles worked on and she will look just as good.

Mind if I ask weather you intend them to be game models or rendering models?

I'm not sure what to make next so i'm going to let any of you decide. However please could it be from either star wars or star trek as i'm not as sure of the designs of other Sci-Fi ships.

Also if you do would you if possible have a picture I could use as a reference when modaling it.

thank you for your help in advance.

Do not model anything SciFi. Model something that is very familiar to you, maybe an object that you can grab and look at all three sides...

a calculator, for example...

I do not mean this is a joke! Really try it.

Well how could i refuse my first model request

EA I shall model the greatest calculator in existance (a scientific one)

Now to go and hold the calculator for an hour or two (that is a joke).

EAS has a point. The sum of a modeler is what they are able to learn to see , and recreate, then imagine. The sad thing is, most modelers start with "let's make this super-cool thing I have just seen on TV" type approach. It's great if you have a goal, and stick with it. Continue to try, experiment, and over all learn to improve your skills. That is the real goal of the modeler, admitted, or not. Even I am constantly "experimenting and learning", even with the same tools I have been using from day one. And another thing that a lot of would be great modelers fail to do, is practice your 2D skills too. Both in things like drawing on paper, as well as improving your skills with a 2D image creation and editing program (like MS-Paint, Gimp, Adobe Photoshop, etc).

Don't laugh, it is very important. (I still use MS-Paint after over 15 years of using it, and I get better and better at it each day).

:thumbsup:Ya I understand now about having to start slowly and working your way up. I only started because I thought it would blow an hour at home when I was bored but now i'm really into it.

So ya im learning and learning more about how to model through tutorials and by messing around.

Also I absolutely love drawing and I've dramaticaly improved in the last year. now im on par with some of the art students here and im not even taking art (I dont like to paint, just to draw).

Thanks for the helpful comments maybe one day i'll be a really good modeler like RJB (ya I hope ha) but theres only one way to get there and thats through practice (lots of it if im o get to his level).

thanks:thumbsup:

like anything it just takes time and dedication to get good at it. For my first year of modeling most of my modelers were rather crummy and with the help of tutorials and other modelers I started to get better so stick with it and you will get better.

That is true, my first ones were bad but recently I have been surprising myself after Syf gave me a few tips and I put some more time and energy into it, since then I have been pumping them out faster than I could imagine.

Actually, I was talking about the general game modeler. They always start with s spaceship from one of the shows.

Yours on the other hand RJB, are tops!

And with enough practice, I think you can get as good, LP.

Thanks all of you.

Im currently working on the calculator and am thinking of putting some texture onto it (must learn that)

also I started a Y-wing before that so im gonna finish it up and im practising with keeping the poly count low. (you know for the competition)

Which reminds me I have done some concept work for my original design for the competition so im looking forward to that to.

This is shaping up to be a real hobby for me.

Ever since EA gave me that good advice about modaling something I can touch, I have been modaling random house objects.

The yesterday I found a tutorial on Lighting and reflectivness so Im happy to show you this render which I did after reading the tutorial.

Best render thus far.jpg

Now I realize its not exactly sci-Fi (in anyway actualy) But im starting of slow. Blender isn't the easiest of software but im gonna stick with it.

Im getting better and soon id like to have a fully trxtured ship posted but until then im gonna learn every aspect I can.

Now just to keep this post a sci-fi one here is my progress on the Y-Wing (low poly version)

Y-Wing head.jpg

and here is the wire frame for it

Y-Wing head wire frame.jpg

Thank you for reading and I hope that in the future i will give you some real good eye candy hee

Ok here is some renders of a ship I have just done.
The real point of doing this was to try out a new method of making armour plating without using textures.
Id like to say thanks to RJB for giving me the tutorial so here they are:

Original Ship.jpg

Original Ship2.jpg

Original Ship5.jpg

And here is one which I have added some colour to (nothing much realy)

In space2.jpg

well as always thanks for reading

Glad it helped you.

Now that you have the basics of paneling you get to work out how to keep it original looking over the whole model. (welcome to my world lol  )

Hello everyone, Im happy to say that I can now texture fully (after watching a very long tutorial about it).

So I decided that it was time that I stop messing around and try to make a full on model. The following images are of the model I'm working on, Its half way finished and it took me 5 hours the yesterday to get this far.
It is a trek model but not a federation vessal. I'm going to leave you all to figure out what the ship is lol but i'll give you a hint, its from the starfleet command universe.

well here is the model so far:

Leoperd WIP render.jpg

Leoperd WIP render2.jpg

Leoperd WIP render3.jpg

well thats all the renders of it so far, all my modeling work is going into it. Also I realize im not the best at texturing so It doesn't look brilliant but i'm happy with it so far.

Anywho thanks for reading and I hope for some feedback okdokie.

A tip for posting attachments, when in the upload screen open the images in a new window by clicking on them after they have been uploaded. Then in the new window address bar copy the link and add them in the following:

This would avoid you spoiler tagging the attachment thumbnails.

You're getting better, texturing is a little tricky but funny thing is I learnt to do it before I could model but my success was limited. It's much easier to texture a model before it's re-grouped too.

Keep up the good work as you are improving with every model you make a post here.

Contact SquireJames. I think he has some references, not sure what.

By the way, that is a 500% improvement on your modeling skills.

Go to battleclinic, it's a SFC3 site, google it. It has thousands of models and an entire Lyran section as well as many other species and you should be able to find a starbase there was well as some texture maps if you require them.
