• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Greetings all :)

While the boss is away, he left me responsible to put this fortnight's poll up; so here I am - putting it up.

Now, recently there's been a little speculation about the decline of A2 modding and we thought it would be a good time to bring out this little number:

Imagine, if you will, that completely by surprise A3 is released. What would you do? Tell us now!

We'd have a field day no doubt. :p

I'd wait for reviews honestly, but no harm in going to the store too. Although its usually a month late in these parts.

If A2 was anything to go by...

Buy it. Take it apart to see how the odf structure works, before even playing it. Start modding pretty much straight away.

I'd buy it and play it at least for a week or so before I started to mod it, depending on what it was like to start with of course. It just better have the features we all want, as in the developers actually ask the A2 Community and actually do their best to add in most of what we want as well as not hardcoding anything.

True, but certain things I would like to see I don't think would be possible on the Storm3D engine, at least not in it's current version that Legacy runs on, and highly unlikely on the older version that A2 runs on. Things such as blowing a nacelle off stops the ship from going to warp is an example, entering orbit of a planet and seeing colonies from orbit and being able to target individual cities/colony towns is another. It's for this very reason Syf and I decided to look at making our own game, but real life has slowed that down to a halt currently.

The only way to do this currently on A2 was suggested a few weeks back by making the ship a research station and you can target individual pods, not quite what I wanted, nor I think the member whom found this way out. Hardcoding is our evil devil, I sometimes miss modding A1, not much in the way of hardcoding there. :)

But for now FO seems to be the closest thing to an A3. However like when A2 came out some like it others don't.

It would be nice to see an A3 running on perhaps a new engine with much more in the ways of options for not only the game but for us modders too. :)

Hehe, I wouldn't say it's impossible for A2 - just might not be desirable for a RTS  (at least for some folk). There will be a better damage visualization system coming 'soon' (Doca has some nice scripting, but it needs to wait for other coding features first), but you're right, it won't be allowing you to choose to target an engine, just the random effect that blowing off a nacelle equals engine failure, etc. I agree on all counts there (well, except that A1 had a lot of nasty hardcoding too  ) :) . Since I'm dangerously close to pushing this into stupid territory, I'll PM you a few morsels for thought instead .

I would go and buy it the moment it came to the stores. As it takes a long time for any games released in US to come to the stores in Norway, there's also a big chance I have had time to see the reviews as well before it gets available to buy in Norway.

I would go to the next games store, buy it and play the campaign nonstop until I'm done, then find some people here who have the game and arrange a game or two. Even is it isn't as good as advertised, come on, it's A3! OMGWTFBBQAWSUM! :yum:

Awww... Yeah, I have been the face of the MSFC Polling Crew for the last months. Because I was the one who posted the polls. But behind the scenes we're pretty democratic, aren't we?
Which reminds me: We're not a closed society. If anybody would like to help, he is welcome. Even if you just want to suggest a poll, post in the latest poll thread or send us a PM.

I do believe I would go buy it thought some of the features I would love to see are already in different games (think Sins of a Solar empire shows colonies and allows for building and targeting of them.
