But would WANT to live on a tall ship from times past, or in the modern worlds ships.

would I want to?? I have.

her name was the RSS Huntley (schooner rigged crew of 11)and she was a replica of the rather famous HMS pickle , fought at trafalgar and rescued several folks from the after... including a naked noblewoman and a motely clad jester...

Many thousands of folk every year take to the seas on similar vessels, some for military training (because even the navy thinks there is something to be gained from the understandings of wind wave and teamwork that a sail ship provides) and some for simple pleasure (monster-hotel-come cruise liner or tall sailing ship... not a difficult chocie)

I'm not saying that they would be anywhere near as fun when the high velocity rounds started flying, but how many round the world motor boat races do you know about?? and can you really tell me it would capture anyone's imagination to the same extent?

if you meant on a tall sailer under the historical conditions, then that is anothr question altogether and it might be worth pointing out that for the time period conditions on lots of those ships were better than the equivalent person could recive on land (most of the C19 naval Tars were volunteers by quite a margin.. but i guess the alcoholic equivalent of two bottles of modern white rum a day, on top of the beer, sort of helped.)

Constitution Refit, love everything about TMP and Wrath of Khan.

A close second would be the Sovereign, first TNG era Starfleet ship that looked like an actual military ship and not a luxury liner.

There's a top 3 list for me:

1st place: Intrepid Class (sleek, elegant looking and fast)
2nd place: Galaxy Class (fed explorer and another cool design)
3rd place: Constitution Class Refit: (instant classic -nuff said)

Well, a ship like the Scimitar could be probably very hard to assimilate, so...

But yes, an assimilated Scimitar could be a very scary thought, especially if the Borg get their cybernetic hands on all that Theleron radiation!

As with Babylon 5, I like the Starfleet Nova class  (What a difference is scale and function these two classes have...)

Small, endurable and built for what Starfleet is meant to be: exploration!
You know, the B5 one is a sledge hammer :D

I shall always be a fan of the Excelsior Class. It shares the same unique design that started trek, from the TOS Enterprise, through to the Ent-A Constitution Refit. It goes without saying, that the Excelsior will always be a favourite of mine.

In addition to that though, I also like the Galaxy, Sabre, and Akira. All for very different reasons.

In regard to other races, the Klingon Vor'cha is going to be one of the top dogs, as is the Bird of Prey. These ships are a legend in their own right.

Can't say I'm a fan of the Intrepid or Sovereign though. They do look ok, but they don't really do it for me.

Out of the entire range of ships available... ..the Ambassador class.

Not sure why, but its design seems fundamentally right to me.
Plus the fact that we rarely saw it in canon helped there, made it a little exotic.

If I'm allowed to go with non canon, I'd be a shameless self publicist and support the Huitzilin (Hummingbird) class. Think intrepid, now think of it being stretched out and reduced to 10-15 decks, but with the extra length compensating for the loss of decks by making the existing ones longer. Long nacelles, double curved into a classic 1930's Tear-drop rear wheel cover form (Think Talbot T150 SS Tear-drop coupe).

Designed it as a post TNG ship intended to be a high speed courier, designed to take personnel or equipment across sectors at high speed, handing them over to a more multi-purpose vessel or outpost, then serving as a science cruiser between these duties. But, canon only so I cant. Nevermind.

I'd say the Sovereign-Class, with the Defiant-Class and Intrepid-Class close behind.

Creed I agree with you there. Being an Ex-Naval Sailor I can say this for a fact the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) Is still Commissioned and is Considered Cream of the Crop Orders, if I was to get orders to a Boat I would want it to be her. and as Picard said "Wind in your hair the stars to guide you..."

Now for the assimilation of the Scimitar well the Borg would have to be fast because one shot from that Theleron Weapon would Stop even the largest Borg Cube in its Tracks with in a Minute.

As for my Fav ship:

Feds: Nova, good little ship.
Cards: Keldon (Obsidian Order Version.)

The Borg can easily neutralize the Thalaron weapon before its 7 minutes loading sequence is complete. Yes, Nemesis stated it takes 7 minutes for that weapon to load. ;)

Oh yeah, another thing; Starfox, this thread is for canon ships. :)

My favorite Canon Star Trek ship? I have two of them and you're going to make me choose? I choose...

Klingon D-7 Battlecrusier

All you Federation grass eaters out there can keep all those fancy-schmantzy Starfleet ships. I'd rather ship aboard an honest warship than a "science and exploration" vessel. Which mounts weapons. For the Empire! For Kahless!

My personal favorite is the defiant class. That ship to me looks bread for war more so than any other ship in trek to me. Death does indeed come im small packages. Then a close 2nd is the k'tinga...for me at least.

We are a like Thunderfoot.

I always loved the Constitution class both the TOS and Refit versions. I also liked the Excelsior class though not the Ent-B type. I also love the D7/K'Tinga class, gotta love the TOS/TMP Klingons they had spirit unlike the TNG ones.

Mine is the steamrunner. Always struck me as an interesting design not used on any other ship:)

If this was the "Favourite Canon StarFleet Ship" Thread, I'd have to think a long time about it. There are three of them I really like, the Steamrunner, Akira and Galaxy.

However it's not just StarFleet, which makes things a lot easier. I say: D'deridex! With the Galor being a close second. But if I had the choice, I'd take the D'deridex.

Top Faves

UFP:
Intrepid (Very Agile and Adaptable. The design rocks too)
Constitution Refit (This thing is a classic and very photogenic.)
JJPrise (Seriously developing a soft spot for the hot rod )
Sovereign (The epitome of a modern TNG design.)

Klingon Empire:
Negh'Var (Nothing says Klinker power projection better.)

Romulan:
D'Deridex (Awesome ship to behold.)

The Dreadnaught from Valiant. Sorry
Well, great! I love it, too. Although I think that all of the Dominion designs are good. The DS9 people obviously had a great designer.
