There will be a new big screen version of Frank Herbert's Dune and this time it will be directed by Peter Berg:
MTV Movies Blog
"Ladies and gentlemen, the next huge sci-fi franchise has a director. During an interview with “The Kingdom†director Peter Berg, he confirmed the rumor that “Dune†is coming and that he’s the one that will helm it. Calling the plans for him to direct “a done deal,†Berg told me that “if it weren’t for the writer’s strike, we’d be in it right now.â€

Berg says that while there’s no script yet, they have a list of writers they plan to go out to once the strike settles. The helmer called himself “a huge fan of the book†and when asked about the scale of the film, he simply replied, “big big big.â€

As any fan of the Frank Herbert classic knows, “Dune†received the big screen treatment once before in a divisive David Lynch film. Berg said that while he’s “a big fan of Lynch,†he believes “that interpretaion has left the door wide open for a remake.â€"

I've been hoping to see a new version of Dune for a very long time. The original is my favorite book and I do like both Lynch's extended Edition and Sci-Fi's Director's Cut miniseries.

I like Berg as an actor, though I'm largely unfamiliar with his work as a director. Haven't seen the Kingdom yet; although I might have wanted someone a little more versed in the genre to helm it, I have faith Berg can do the job with the write writing and just as importantly the right cast.

However, it is my opinion that to do Dune right it should be done in a Trilogy. The problem with Lynch's version was that the book was so grand that way too much had to be cut even to fit the 3 hour version.

Since the first book is actually divided into 3 books; Dune, the Prophet and Muad'Dib, I think each book should be a 2-3 hour long film (Like the Lord of the Rings) in order to truly do justice to every aspect of the story and every character arc.

Here's hoping they manage to truly capture the essence of the book in its entirety.

A remake of a remake. I hope it turns out good as I really liked the remake. I must admit I never read the book but I do hope they take their time with it, spread it out more perhaps have a trilogy or even 6 movies.

Dune, what can i say about Dune...

Scifi at its peek. of course anyone who has read the books knows that...

More Movies of the series would do the World some good, and expose a larger population to Frank Herbert's masterpieces.

there is only one problem with movies: from the time there anounced to the time there finished seems like too Freakn' long.

UGH... another movie? well, hopefully they won't do so badly with it. (square shields? Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck? Blobs for Navigators?) Of course, I saw the miniseries first, which may have influenced me a bit, but, I really didn't find all that much good material in the movie. The miniseries, however, i thought was quite good, (except for the weird butterfly hats. what was up with that?) and I'm really not sure about how keen on a new movie I would be. There is simply too much material to cover in one movie, and, as we've seen with the latest harry potter movies, Hollywood tends to butcher the storyline. I don't think i could stand that. They'd end up taking out most of my favorite parts, and just ruining the story. I think that the Movie Dune is best left to a format that has more time at it's disposal.
