BBC1 controller Peter Fincham has commissioned ITV Productions to make a movie based on Bram Stoker's 1897 vampire novel Dracula.
Shooting begins next month on the film, which has been adapted by Hearts and Bones writer Stewart Harcourt and is expected to be one of the channel's centrepiece programmes at Christmas.

It is being overseen by the outgoing head of ITV's London-based drama department, Damien Timmer, and department controller Michelle Buck. BBC Wales head of drama, Julie Gardner, is executive producing for the BBC.

In the production, which begins filming in Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, Marc Warren plays the role of Dracula while Rafe Spall is Harker, the English solicitor whose first meeting with the count begins the story.

Sophia Myles, who starred as Lady Penelope in the Thunderbirds feature film, plays Lucy, the vivacious friend of Harker's sweetheart Mina, who is played by MirrorMask actor Stephanie Leonidas.

Line of Beauty actor Dan Stevens takes on the role of Lucy's suitor Holmwood, while David Suchet, best known for playing Poirot in the ITV dramatisations, plays Harker's teacher and vampire scholar Van Helsing.

The film is being produced by Poirot producer Trevor Hopkins and directed by Bill Eagles, whose other work includes the feature film Beautiful Creatures.

Hopkins said: "Stewart Harcourt's script paints a compelling and intelligent new adaptation of this classic story. Riddled with syphilis and sex, it penetrates the surface of Victorian society and plunges us into the dark heart of Dracula. And we've assembled a cast of some of the finest young rising stars of British TV.

The producer added: "This is my personal take on the classic Bram Stoker novel. And I hope its scenes of sex, horror and disease will blow the cobwebs off traditional period drama, and provide a classic literary chiller perfect for a dark winter night.""
