MSFC CONTEST:
Future of mankind Spacecraft
rjbwip1agq9.jpg

Ok I'll get the ball rolling.

My design will be using a kind of gravity drive for FTL (think of the ship from event horizon) and as such has limited artificial gravity (about 0.5-0.7 g) So far I'm a little over 700 polys in so a lot more still to come.

An awesome start RJB. I suspect you'll be a hard one to beat (If that's even possible).

Well I did think of giving myself a handicap of only 5,000 polys to work with but we will see, the contest is still very young.

Got a bit more done and I'm just under 6,500 right now.

My plan is to use 1k to finish the under side, 500 poly to do the top, 1k to finish the sub-light engines and have 1k left over to do some extra details.

That's coming on well - I like the design of the ring thing at the back and how it links with the main front bit (how technical )

Nice plan on how to use the remaining polies as well, do you have any plans for textures? In my experience they take longer than the actual meshing.

I have a feeling that this contest is going to be a hard one to win ;)

I've always been a fan of functional designs and this is no different. Since the focus of this contest is on the first FTL ship I wanted my own design to focus on the FTL drive itself since it's the main theme of this contest.

AS for textures, I have not decided what I want to do yet. I want to see where the ship is at when the modeling is done and work from there.

Well for the most part for my models, polygon count does not matter. (my new ships are around 500k if not higher) But having a limit, it helps having a bit of a plan. Get the base model done, work on the polygon heavy areas and then divide up the rest over the whole ship.

Glad you like it so far.

Well next round I may judge since I can give a bit more input back to people.

Thank you jeddy and thank you to all of you.

I know that you were joking, give me some credit. lol. :p

But I do want to judge for a round since it will give me a chance to get more involved in the process. Be part of both processes.

Thats good, any cheating will not be tolerated lol:lol:

I was avoiding commenting on any WIP thread, as I personally think its a conflict of interest. However, I will say I'm impressed with the quality of the WIP's so far. And thats all of them, not just RJB's.

Ok I'm now sitting at 9,930 polys, I'll try to squeeze a bit more out of it to get as close to 10k as I can.

Now that's a ship. Beautiful - hard lines that still seem to flow together into a smooth shape. The detail's excellent - not too much but enough to show that its not just a bare slate, as it were, needing textures. Excellent

Favourite bits - The engines, the windows (nice glow effect on them), the ring thingy (like the raised panels on it - looks a little like a stargate) and the front.

Just a little thought, those cylinder's at the front; hard to tell from the renders but they look to be quite smooth, If you need some extra polygons you could maybe reduce the side numbers on them. It won't do much but it might do a panel or two.

I find the trick to detailing is to keep everything on the same scale while also being evenly spread over the whole model. It's not the easiest thing to do but once you start getting a flow it almost does itself.

When I have sometime I'm going to do a bit of a fluff write up on the ship and its FTL drive to go with my final entry.

Since they were a more viable item I went higher on the polys on purpose. If they were more hidden away I would have done 6 sided and not 12. I also did a look over of the model this morning and reduced its poly count to 9778.

Here is a lightwave view of the model.

Early Start on textures.

For the most part I think I'm going to keep it simple but I'll make up for that with a nice lighting rig. (Running lights and such.)

Sweet...

Now I'm gonna have to do some light magic (if that's possible) just to hope to have a chance.
