The overall shape seems very similar to the Nimitz Class carrier. Did you base her on that?

No I didn't base it on any particular naval ship. I just liked the shape of them and thought that if we were to go into space wouldn't we use a trusted design, and one that moved similalry i.e. a ship (although obviously a ship cant go up,down lol. I'm actualy changing the bridge right now as it doesnt look to good (well it was a very early design).

I'm gonna look into the nimitz class carrier though may help me with the shape (although I'm trying to make an original one obviously lol)

Well here is the ammendments that I said I was doing lol basically I'm starting to shape the ship into something more ship like (not just a rectangle). I'm not finished with the bridge yet as it is no way near detailed enough. I've got hardly any polys used up yet (around 500 so far) and since were alowed 10000 I have a lot to play with. Also i'm gonna make my own textures for this and so that should be fun.

attachment.php

well here it is So far it looks like a carrier but that will change soon enough I'm just exploring new designs and keeping some parts of one and changing the rest. Plus I'm gonna make some cannons so that will be fun.

Also I was thinking of putting a lot of space into making a powerplant kind opf thing as if it is the earths first FTL ship I'ts going to take a lot of power due to imperfections. Its like PC's not so long ago a killabyte was huge and now people don't even notice such a tiny pit of space lol. I remember looking at an advert selling 32 killabytes of memory for £30 pounds :lol2:

That's a great improvement right there,

Well here is some further improvements including the power plant at the back. since it is a first FTL ship I would think they wouldn't be at the pinnicle of FTL drives so this will be a more energy hungry one.

Also several mends to the bridge and well just have a look lol.

Looking great, sure is a good looking model. Though I do agree she looks more like a naval than a space ship. Some additions or changes in the model may be needed but I like where this is heading.

Ya It does look a bit to much like a naval ship. However with the amount of time We have got I'm sure it'll look spacy enough and the textures will definently make it look spacey lol. thanks for the encouragement though, its really motovational hee

Nice idea and execution. I like the way that the reactor can be seen on the aft part of the hull - makes it seem like the main priority was getting it to work.

Never used Blender before - but it seems you know you're way around it; keep at it

that is a very nice model, while it still looks naval, i think it still has an air of Spaceyness, the bridge area looks like the ships in starship troopers.

and from the VERY little ive seen of Sace: Above and beyond (Being teh picture of Syf's ship in Crossovers) it looks rather like that in my opinion.

either way, its very nice and definately giving me a run for my money ^^

Well if Im right about a poly being a triangle face then that means i'm at around 1500 polys so far (double all my squire-rectangle faces). it is extremely blocky lol. I just want a good over all shape before i try to be detailed heh. but your on in terms of the competition Jedd. this is gonna get messy :p (JK)

Hi everyone I'm going to be posting my next update soon but I'm experiancing some health problems so it won't be a big improvement lol. That and the fact that I'm still working on my incomplete cheetah for my models and renders section and the fiction i'm writing it's kinda hectic. but anywho thanks for all your comments and if the ship looks like its from space above and beyond then i'm amazed, never seen the show once or herad of it before coming here.

gonna look into it hee.

Ya thanks RJB I have a heart problem and well its been getting worse recently (palputations, irregular heart beat, throbbing pains where my heart is the whole lot) anyway I have done the engines and I have forgotten to put the renders on my flash pen (stupid).

Alas without a visual aid its hard to describe the changes hee. basically I have removed the back agian and added a huge engine. its hard work trying to get a cylinder to conet to a square face all those wasted polies. but heh it looks the part.

well I will uplaod the renders tomorrow and to make sure, I will put them on my memory pen as soon as I get home.

I am saddened to here of your health problems getting worse. I hope it improves soon for you.

The model looks great so far. Sorry guys, but I have to disagree with the S:AAB reference (I have the full blueprints of the Saratoga). It's much different. Only some minor similarities really is all I can see. I'd say it looks more like the Nimitz class carrier warships of modern US Navy than the S:AAB carrier. But that's not a bad thing.

Now off I go to prep my entry.

My girlfriend has that problem too, irregular heart beat so I can understand what you're going through. Hope you can get it fixed, she is seeing a doctor as soon as she moves to see if they can find the cause and fix it perhaps you might want to think about doing the same. ;)

True. however the General shape brings the Saratoga in mind. i defiantly agree. it resembles the Nimitz Class more.

Ya thanks all about my health and the ship I can't really see any similarity's other than the bridge... sort of ha. Um my father has the heart problems and I think its been passed on, but he is taking tablets and I'm going to see a docter about it. Actualy I have been to see one about it before but they said i'm fine (ya I feel fine...not).

Any who back to the model, I have it here and I'm realy pleaed with the engines. so here it is:

Well there they are. I'm realy happy with it but I had to do some smoothing on either side of it as it looked dodgy heh.

Well Next I gonna give it more shape and start adding turrets and panels to make it look better and I'm gonna look into making a metal texture.

well thanks again all for all the comments.

Bye Bye

That's the one problem with working in a limited poly environment, is that often you run into that dodgy look. Being able to work around it is what makes it an even greater work of art.

Looking better.

Ok today is a very big change on the ship and I'm going to explain why first. This weekend I went to my friends and he showed me different methods of using blender and different tools I could use. he did this because I told him about my model and the problems I was of adding any thing, and all the polies I had been waisting trying to connect parts to the ships body. well he showed me some very useful things and I went home liturally took the ship apart and built it again.

It still has the same idea about it save the navy ship theme as I couldn't find any where to put any thing without wasting more polies getting there.

also I have founda new way to render the image so now it is more clear and I've made it so you can see the wire frame on it.

well enough blabbering on..... here she is:

Well there it is, Its at 1480 something polies now so lots to work on and hopefully you can see that there is lots of faces I can build upon. I still have the power plant and the bridge, and This time while it doesn't look like a navy carrier, I still wanted it to be a carrier type ship so there are alot of hanger space on the ship. the method which helped me the most was this:
I would grap to adjacent vertecies and scale the both to 0. this would over lap them and then I would simply delete the doubles. now both objects would be together and I wouldn't have to ad a new minute face between them to connect them together.

well I really want to know what you think of the change, I still have a copy of the original but I really think this is a much better way.

I'm liking the remake so far, I'm assume the large part next to the bridge is the power plan which I think is great (FTL may need a lot of power).

If any of the existing theories are right, then FTL would in fact require a power-plant 10,000 times greater than the most powerful source of energy our current level of technology can muster.

I think this new redesign looks awesome. The lower poly count that is obvious will also allow for more detail work to be made. Great Job on the redesign LP.

Well here is how the paneling detail is going thus far. I must admit since this is my first time really doing anything off the top of my head it is really hard. plus put that with my inexperiance with modeling and boom you have a second bit model.

I'm kind of stumped as to what to do. I have an idea but whenever i try it the decimate button says "non-manifold mesh input" and wont count the polies. i can see how many faces are on the model from the top. but that is counting all squares and triangles so it isn't the actualy poly count.

I think if it pursists i'm just going to say stuff it and just ignore the decimate button and try to figure out how many polies I have on my own.

well enough talk. here is its current condition:

Well sorry for the crap reselution but its the colleges computers. I'm really going to try this weekend to do something with this other than add cubucal panels. maybe shove a grand cannon on the underside of it. and well generally play around with it and say stuff it if the program doesn't like it heh.
