Atlantis to End with Its Fifth Season

Atlantis will end with its fifth season next year but Atlantis will continue in what is hoped to be a series of Atlantis movies (presumably straight to DVD) like its parent SG-1.

The fifth and last season will end on a cliffhanger with the resolution to be in the first Atlantis movie:

I heard about this yesterday and I have to say I'm disappointed, I was really hoping that Atlantis would last at least as long as SG-1 did. As long as there are a fair number of movies to come for both Atlantis and SG-1 then it's not so bad.

the only good thing about that is that it gives me time to catch up. i always liked Atlantis. even though i hadn't been following it as closely as I'd like too...

I think one of their mistakes with the show is introducing too many 'leader' characters, I mean to date there have been what, 4? 6? different so-called leaders of the Atlantis Expedition? And it's only 5 seasons? I can count 3, for the 10 seasons of SG-1...

But it is disappointing to see this happen, I just hope we get to see Carter again by the end of this...

words cannot say how dissapointed i am with this, well at least we can look forward to some great crap coming from the networks, lets all get excited cos American Idol will be back on, or how abot big brother, why bother with quality shows lets just film people sleeping!

Read this last night, had to re-read it earlier today to make sure I got it right yesterday, and I have to say, I'm pretty annoyed with this decision. Yeah sure, DVD-movies will continue the show, but not in the same way, and I don't think they'll be half as good.

It seems as though everyone is giving up on Atlantis, so that they may continue with Universe. Personally, they should have given Atlantis her 10-year season, and then taken Universe on from there. Atlantis (alike SG-1) should have had 10 seasons.

I completely agree with you, Atlantis is still more than fresh and interesting enough to keep going for at least another 3 seasons (if not 5+). From the article I read on this it seems they think both SG-1 and Atlantis will do better as DVD movies than television programmes, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see whether they're right, if not maybe they'll go back to the original television approach.

I agree Ash I an too annoyed by this Atlantis should get at least 7-8 seasons in my opinion. It appears to me that the production staff are just bored and want to do something new, namely Universe. While I am sure we will come to love Universe like we did with Atlantis I think they should give the show a good run before ending it.

The film/tv industry are just going down hill especially in the sci-fi genre and soon we will only be watching re-runs of shows 10 years old with no new content.
