• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Sigh on this Covid-19 mess. How are you all holding up on your sides of the world? Is it as bad as the news say?

The latest has the Philippines locking down the capital due to rising cases. But where I am at NZ it's still business as usual, but you can tell people are getting worried regardless.

Fear tends to spread faster than anything else.

I went to Taco Bell today, for example, and if we want to get a drink refill, we now have to ask the employees for another cup, instead of refilling one we've drank out of already. Also, instead of getting our own lids, straws, napkins, and hot sauce, we have to ask the counter for those as well.

Add to that that a number of sporting events have been shut down or prohibited from having an in-person audience.

If you want good, solid info on the coronavirus, strengthen your hyperbole-detection skills. Make sure you apply them to both government sources and private sources of information, no matter what side of the political isle you or the source is on.

So far the only people dying from this are immuno-suppressed individuals (including elderly people). Still a good idea to prevent the spread so you don't infect an immune-suppressed friend or family member, but keep in mind COVID isn't KV.

"Fear tends to spread faster than anything else."

That is true

But keep in mind there are common sense steps to help improve your odds

Clean your hands often
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact

Take steps to protect others

Stay home if you’re sick

Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
  • Throw used tissues in the trash.
  • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Wear a facemask if you are sick
  • If you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a facemask if they enter your room. Learn what to do if you are sick.
  • If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask). Facemasks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.

Clean and disinfect
  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

Simple common sense things that we all should have been doing all along

Aside from the usual scare, and having my day job being blasted with idiots buying up toilet paper like it's the end of the world (I work in retail), to me it's just another scary virus that's about due for a vaccine just in time for election season, same with Bird flu, Ebola, Swine flu etc.

The problem with this one is the extended incubation time without people being symptomatic. With diseases where it is obvious fairly quickly it can be contained, people showing signs can be quarantined before they have much chance to pass it on. In this case, people are going over a week before they show obvious signs, but by that time they've already passed it on. How many people do you interact with in a week? The simple fact is that it's already too late and I can guarantee that the actual cases are far higher than the reported cases - just people aren't aware that they have it yet. There needed to be a blanket ban on travel to/from the initial afflicted areas, but in this age of "globalisation" such control is impossible (especially in Europe). The only way of stopping this now is if everybody quarantines themselves for a month - but that isn't going to happen.

The other problem with this one is that it's new. The transmission rate seems to be a little higher than flu, but it's new enough that those figures can't be confirmed (and again, without blanket testing we don't know who is infected). Equally the mortality rate is something of an unknown(although so far again at flu like levels). Our best data comes from China, and therefore isn't necessarily reliable (not because they're trying to hide it, but it's a large population spread over a large area. Do they know how bad it is in the rural areas?)

The best thing to do at this point is stay healthy so that when/if you catch it you fight it off, and to be considerate to those around you. I'd wager that there are people who have had it but only suffered mild symptoms and so haven't reported it. I'd also wager that these people have gone to work and spread it on. So play it safe, it may not seriously hurt you but it may do to someone else.

People are dying, this can be a killer. But so far it seems to be people with existing underlying respiratory conditions rather than being fatal in of itself.

And to all those people panic buying pasta and bog roll - if things get bad enough that supplies of "essentials" like that dry up, then I humbly submit that there won't be the water and power to cook your pasta anyway. And for please, stop stealing antibacterial gel and face masks from the hospitals!!!

Well ...

According to the test I took at the VA ... I have Covid-19

It feels like the flu/ cold at this point ... but should be okay I'm in good shape for my age .

So I have quarantined myself away from my family and took up residence in the apartment above my garage for the time being.

Yep Bachelor pad time for this old boy

Thanks

I got it from going to the local civil airport would be my best guess , given there has been a outbreak there. It seem to be from a Charter flight were one of the passenger was infected.

As to how I'm doing I just feel a little under the weather.

Feel better man.

I'll be glad when this is all over and done with. I'm sick of hearing about it, but hey, at least we're not hearing about Brexit anymore (how convenient for the Tory Wankpuffin in charge...).

The landscape will be very different after - I think a lot of small business will disappear because they can't survive the extended shut-down of the country. Which is a shame, as (certainly in hospitality) they tend to be the better places to go eat, certainly more so than mediocre chain restaurants.

People are showing the worst sides of themselves. Frankly, i'm beginning to hope it does devolve into the beginnings of The Walking Dead, so we can start smacking people in the head!!

Well, that sucks. On the bright side, plenty of time for you to leave Sci and me even more in the dust on Destiny.

As to how I'm doing I just feel a little under the weather.
Symptoms are similar to the flu for most people, but definitely call someone if you start to feel worse; it causes organ failure in a small portion of the population. They're also recommending not to take ibuprofen for now since some patients had a bad reaction to it and they're not sure if it was related to coronavirus or not yet. They're also recommending against naproxene, to be safe, since it works in a very similar manner. Acetaminophen seems to be fine.

Stay strong Hellkite and a speedy recovery to you and all who have got this.

For everyone else, lots of health and stay safe. Looks like this one might take a while before it is nipped in the bud.

From what I have been told and have read, it would be best to use Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help with fever and headaches, do not issue Ibuprofen (Advil). Have the doctors prescribed something for you to take?

Get better soon Hellkite.

Fight on through it Hellkite. And keep on telling us how it goes - purely from a selfish perspective it's useful to actually know first hand what the actual progression of symptoms is, instead of what the media says (some of which is oversimplified or the usual media panic stricken garbage).

Regarding Iburprofen, the issue is that there have been no properly controlled studies (that goes for a lot of medication). On the one hand it treats some of the symptoms (yay), on the other hand it reduces antibody production (booo, but that actually may help with reduction of inflammation and immune response complications in serious conditions), but on the other hand again it may help inhibit viral reproduction (yay).

I've started watching a series of videos and this one actually discusses this in more detail.
