????? Attack Helicopter

Need a name for this one. Think I may need to shorten up the side profile?

It is not .What it is a ultra light fixed wing plane with a/an pusher propeller ; like this drone.

Sorry for the confusion the racoon should NOT post after 9 pm. lol I called it a helicopter but I was going for more of a VTOL with an inclosed-rotor system. Something like so. @Hellkite
chopper.jpg My rotor pods apparently suck :lol2:

Thanks for the kind words @Chiletrek Glad you like my VTOL

Finch VTOL

A few small changes to the side profile. I'm still not sold on it. I cut out about ten percent out of the cockpit and the front looks ok. Took out ten percent of the rear fuselage but I dont know if it helped. Suggestion needed.

Very rough top down view of a rotor pod.

I'm very happy how the front came out. :D Added a top radar dish (the dark grey oval). Internal forward radar in the nose (hexagon). Internal rotary missile bay (side view trapezoid). Went from a twin 30mm cannon to just a single (liked the looks of the twin but a single 30mm chaingun is probably better from a weight stand point plus more ammo).

Any idea how fast this thing would fly if it was real @Hellkite ? Figure titanium carbonfiber fuselage, twin turboshaft engines, and like twelve fat racoons in the cockpit?

The tiltrotor's advantage is significantly greater speed than a helicopter. In a helicopter the maximum forward speed is defined by the turn speed of the rotor; at some point the helicopter will be moving forward at the same speed as the spinning of the backwards-moving side of the rotor, so that side of the rotor sees zero or negative airspeed, and begins to stall. This limits modern helicopters to cruise speeds of about 150 knots / 277 km/h. However, with the tiltrotor this problem is avoided, because the proprotors are perpendicular to the motion in the high-speed portions of the flight regime (and thus not subject to this reverse flow condition), so the tiltrotor has relatively high maximum speed—over 300 knots / 560 km/h has been demonstrated in the two types of tiltrotors flown so far, and cruise speeds of 250 knots / 460 km/h are achieved

Thanks Hellkite for the great explanation of helicopter vs tiltrotors. Never really thought about it but the negative airspeed on the one side of the rotor explains alot.

I do have another stupid question for you. If both tiltrotors failed would the tail rotor plus rotor pods (is rotor pods the right term?) provide enough lift to allow you to soft land the craft or are we in flight brick territory?

Might I suggest you look up Command and Conquer's GDI Helicopters? They are famous for their tiltrotors helicopters. Over the decade (or two), they have changed and improved the design, so there are plenty of designs to look at and 'borrow' a few things from.

Thanks for the suggestion Admiral*Alex I'll give them a look.

I thought it would be brick territory but I didn't know. Hellkite can you think of a way to make a rotor pod that would generate lift?

Shouldn't they redesignate that thing the AS-LN13 Osplat? AH SHET! - Lucky Number 13 O-splat.

On a somewhat more serious note could they add some more wing to the osprey so it would have a little glide ratio?

Ok so what you are saying Hellkite is if I don't want my last few moments in a Finch to be trapper in a 300 knot brick's cramped cockpit with eleven other frantic racoons going apeshit push ever button there is I had better incorporate a cockpit ejection system?

So before I go to far with this idea looking for a little feed back. Like would it fly? @Hellkite

I'm going for a VTOL jet fighter with fighter speed (1.2 mach?) and hover/loiter capability. Twin jet engines and the circles on the wings are rotor pods. Thanks.
