Primeval is Doctor Who's rival on ITV on British television.

Found out from an ad that Primeval is among the new shows to be shown on 9 this year.

It is also one of the shows that Michael Idato assesses in the Sydney Morning Herald Guide but does not seem to be impressed with it:
"Primeval (Nine)

From the makers of Walking with Dinosaurs and (the slightly less thrilling) Prehistoric Park comes the television version of Jurassic Park III. (A chilling omen ... did someone say Tea Leoni?) Top visual effects and all that but surely the dinosaur thing has been well and truly pumped dry?"

Now that does sound interesting. Dinosaurs, I have always been interested in them. :)

ITV is backing Primeval with a heavyweight marketing campaign:
http://www.brandrepublic.com/bulletins/media/article/627450/primeval-heavyweight-push-itv-takes-doctor-who/
"Primeval get heavyweight push as ITV takes on Doctor Who
by Darren Davidson Brand Republic 23 Jan 2007

Primeval: ITV to challenge BBC
LONDON - ITV is backing the launch of its new £6m science-fiction dinosaur drama 'Primeval' with a heavyweight marketing campaign.

M&C Saatchi has created an off-air campaign, encompassing outdoor and press ads, while ITV's in-house promotions agency, ITV Creative, has produced the on-air activity.

The creative introduces members of the cast and attempt to recreate the high-tempo pace of the series with action scenes and the strapline, "Time for adventure".

With effects created by those behind 'Walking with Dinosaurs', 'Primeval' is to take on BBC one's 'Doctor Who' in the Saturday tea-time slot. It tells the story of dinosaurs breaching time to appear in modern London. It has a script by 'Rome''s Adrian Hodges and stars Douglas Henshall and former S Club star Hannah Spearritt.

David Pemsel, ITV's newly installed group marketing director, said: "'Primeval' is a bold scheduling step into Saturday night family drama. We believe the series will have both a wide ranging family appeal as well as becoming cult viewing for aspirational adults."

Chaka Sobhani, creative director at ITV Creative, added: "'Primeval' is a visually stunning and enthralling new action drama for ITV1 and it's been a fantastic challenge to match the excitement and adventure of the show in the promotional campaign."

The launch of the campaign comes as ITV reveals it is launching a research programme to test emerging formats for advertises.

Ad Innovations is part of a wider initiative, spearheaded by ITV's rebranded sales department Customer Relations, to work closely with advertisers."

SFX's article on Primeval:
http://www.sfx.co.uk/page/sfx?entry=sea_monsters_and_centipedes_in
Here's what the first paragraph says:
"Sea-monsters and centipedes in Primeval
It’s a family drama going out on Saturday evenings, it’s got time travel, a Scots leading man and a sidekick played by a blonde pop-star-turned-actress. It’s fair to say that ITV’s Primeval has invited comparison with Doctor Who, but it’s a lazy association to make; the new show’s more of a Stargate-esque ensemble piece, with a team of experts called in by the government to deal with prehistoric monsters who’ve wandered through rips in the fabric of space-time."

The debut of Primeval on Saturday April 28 is TV WEEK's Pick of the Day. The review says that the show does not take itself too seriously and it's a lot of fun.

Episode 1:
A good start to the series.
Solid start at the beginning with that scene of Cutter's wife.
Terrifying whenever that dinosaur turned up and Rex flying in that building was cute.
Interesting casting info: During Easter I saw Douglas Henshall as Arthur Conan Doyle in the BBC TV movie The Strange Case of Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes in which he played Doyle. Doyle had written The Lost World which featured......dinosaurs. So in that movie Henshall had played a man who had written a story about dinosaurs and now here he is on Primeval as someone who investigates dinosaurs!

Episode 2 on Saturday May 5 like the first episode is TV WEEK's Pick of the Day. The reviewer was impressed with the giant spider as seen in the trailer at the end of Episode 1.

Episode 2:
This is a case of the trailer looking better than the episode.
Did not gripped me as much but still a passable episode.
Connor remarked about liking Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. I for one understands how he feels (although in my case it is much more to do with liking the person playing Buffy rather than the character herself).

Episode 3:
That crocodile like creature was sure scary and it should not have been surprise that Helen Cutter would be brought back to the present one way or another.

And this thread died because.....

Primeval I think is a good show, aside from the Time Travelling.. Each show, of which has time travel in it, is all different. I guess everyone has a different idea of how it would effect time and such.

Anyway, Season 1 has finished, and ended quite well. Will be interesting to see what Season 2 gives us.

I don't like the tone of that remark. It wasn't meant to sound offensive.

It is just, the series (in my opinion) is good, and the thread went dead. I was (in my own way) asking why that was.

I see you've found your way into the DW section, Tycoon. Are you a fan too? I know I am.

While I'm a bit off topic, Theta, Thank you far all the wonderful Informant posts. You Rock!

Tycoon, the last post by Theta on this thread was on May 12th. That's hardly died out, you know what I'm saying. Theta is our official DW informant, and often creates threads of different series and such. I myself usually read it, but I myself only post if I know a bit about the series or topic of the thread. Anyone can post/reply any time they wish. But I think often, most members just read what Theta is posting. But none the less, Theta's postings are one of my favorite things about this site. Yes, things here are much different than on A2files.:)

Let's be a bit careful here guys. I don't want this to turn into anything that would require further staff intervention. I hope this will stay on topic from this point. No harm done... Yet!

Back on topic.
So this series is just starting out? Any ideas if they are going to try to port it over across the Atlantic ocean yet?

Over here in the UK, Season 1 of Primeval has finished. I forget how many episodes there were in total, but there were a lot more than three. I saw his post about the third episode, and assumed the thread had gone dead afterwards.

Indeed Theta is one of our longest running members here and if it wasn't for him MSFC wouldn't be what it is today. I myself ready 99% of Theta Sigma's posts though due to not following most of the series I don't post, like Primeval for example I've never heard of it.

DW = Doctor Who... Yeap, that'd be it.

I call the "series" post all part of the DW section. I know, this is not officially part of DW, but more of a competetor.

Episode 6: Wow what an end to the first season. What indeed has happened to Claudia. She has been removed from existence... well... supposable.

There are two scenarios, either the other guys are joking around, and she is hiding somewhere, or, she has actually been removed from existence. Yet, if she has been removed from existence, simply because those other creatures are in a time where they're not suppose to be, then how is it that everything else is the same, apart from a single woman?

Season 2 not yet been shown on Australian TV (although I have been told today it is coming very soon) but decided not to wait any longer for it and by some other way just finished watching the first episode of the season:
Quite an enjoyable start to the season with two dinosaurs in a shopping complex.
Amusing when Connor accidentally shot Abby with a tranquilizer.
Despite being told that Claudia does not exist in the reality that Professor Cutter found himself in she turns up at the end only with a different name!

Theta Sigma
28-08-2008, 19:38
Episode 8:
Pretty enjoyable second episode of the second season.
Disturbing moment when a worm was on Connor's head.
I thought it was heart felt moment that Cutter had with Jenny with that speech towards the end of the episode. Too bad it got interrupted by an unexpected development.

Episode 9:
Season 2, Episode 3.

Good story about the saber-tooth tiger and quite a good realisation of it on-screen.

Very enjoyable episode.
Love it from when Cutter and Stephen found the girl.
Also found found it funny when Cutter punched a caveman!

Episode 12:
Penultimate episode of season 2.
Best scene is when Lester had to face off that creature.
Also wow what a cliffhanger at the end.

To Australian viewers:
After The Friday Night Project last night came an ad for Primeval. Primeval is coming soon on UKTV.

Question is whether season 2 will immediately be shown after season 1 on UKTV. There is a good probability that season 2 will be shown straight to UKTV as the same has happened with the second season of Afterlife. The second season Afterlife was shown straight to UKTV immediately after the showing of its first season.

Episode 13:
Final episode of season 2.
A very good end of the season.
Leek really deserved what he got.
Very sad about Stephen (which is just as sad to what happened to Tosh and Owen at the end of Torchwood season 2).
What a shocking end seeing multiple versions of that soldier.

To Australian viewers:
Primeval will start on UKTV on Tuesday October 7 7:30pm.

The show continues to get better, we even get to see a 'G-Rex' (as Connor called it). I've heard though, that after season three, that is it. Because of the resession and what not, and the cost of running the show, they can't afford to keep going.

Is a shame, it is a good show. :(

Season 3, Episode 10:
Series finale.
Finally Helen Cutter is dead.
What a cliffhanger with Danny, Connor and Abby stuck in the distant past. With the series cancelled perhaps the movie will resolve the cliffhanger.

Like Torchwood season 3, Primeval season 3 had a woman character call Johnson. Since Johnson is a very common name this is perhaps a coincidence.

Primeval which had been cancelled by ITV three months ago has been revived for a fourth and fifth season. Under a new co-production deal between ITV and UKTV the deal is for seven episodes for season 4 and six episodes for season 5.

Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger but it will be quite a while before it is revealed how this is resolved as season 4 will not start (in the UK) until 2011.

That is **** good news. Shame season five will be so few episodes, though it is nice to know that they wont be leaving the show on a cliff hanger (unless they only end up creating another one, which will equally annoy me). Suffice to say, I am pleased to head this news.
