I would like to announce the return to spaceflight for the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Finally, the Shuttle fleet is going back up (again).

The STS-121 will be onboard the Shuttle Discovery. It's flight will be on July 1, 2006.

Let's all watch the great moment in history.

Yep, I heard of this as well. Will be good to see the Space Program (hopefully) getting some more (hopefully) successful action.

I am so sick of news of the wars, Iran, and Terrorists. Finally a touch of great news to hear. I hope this will serve as some inspiration to all those fighting the wars and such. It is most certainly inspiring to me.

I look forward to July for sure now. The best Holiday in the US, The Shuttle Launch, The return of SG1/STA/BSG "new"episodes, and my 10 day vacation from work all in the same month.:thumbsup:

Only thing to make it better, is if I won the Lottery and became a millionair!

I believe so. Since you are about 12-14 hours ahead of us. Depending on the time of the launch. They often launch at early hours, so it may well be July 1st for you, or the very early hours of the 2nd.

For us US citizens, it's a huge milestone. Since most of the government's space program has been grounded since the shuttle Columbia exploded on it's return to earth. Actually, for the world, it's a huge milestone. A lesson learned for all mankind, was the Columbia. If we are to become a space-faring race, we have to learn to overcome all obticles, including our own "Human Error".

Hopefully NASA does not delay the flight (or at least to July 4! :wink: ) and hopefully NASA finds quickly a good successor for the old shuttles. Venture Star was a great concept, before being grounded by the Bush administration in early 2001.

Remeber the first shuttle to be built: ENTERPRISE OV-1

And why do the shuttles lift off in the early hours mostly? Has this something to do with the weather conditions or the quality of the air?

Well, that's good news. If it's in the Early Hours there, Syf, it would mean that it would be afternoon here. More or less. I'd love to watch it, but I'll probably be at work . . . :cry:

Yes, weather during the early hours is usuallly quite colld so they delay flightss because of thatt. Sommetimes cold weather can have an adverse affect on expansionn areas on the shuttle and that ccould be potentiallly a bad thing.

Go STS-121!!! Make the sppace program proud again!

I'd like to fly in a Soyouz capsule to ISS and return with the Endeavour back to Earth.
Star City - Baikonur -> Space -> Cape Kennedy - Houston :D

(Unfortunately I do not have 1 Billion US Dollar, as Dennis Tito had :cry2: )

I'd like to makke a flyby of Saturn, go on ttowards the Oort cloud, and vvector an approach home after seeing all thatt, and makingg one last sttop at Mars on the return journey.

Space Tourism is a near future reality. They expect to be doing civilian spaceflights within the next few years. At first, the expected cost to the passengers would be $200,000 US dollars. When as the cost / popularity is improved, eventually down to $10,000 US dollars within a few years after making tourism Happen. And to top that off, there is already plans be a Los Vegas Casino owner to put a orbital hotel up soon also. I'd expect Space tourism to be real in the next 5 years, with even more/cheaper available within 10 years.

That's why I consider the Shuttle flteet's return to service so important. So, soon we have that return.

They have a job, that matches with their craft's name: Discovery.
