View Full Version : A Real Dumb Question..

Does anyone care to give me (in a nut shell) the story behind Battlestar Galactica?

I've never watched a single episode, though saw a trailer on TV the other night (when watching Ark of Truth), something about season 4 or 5.. and some woman saying she'd found Earth. It looked pretty darn good.

In a nutshell, there was a world called Kobol where mankind evolved. Eons ago three tribes of man left the world on 13 ships, 12 settled in a system and became the 12 Colonies of Kobol (Colonials). The 13th left a little later or earlier, I can't remember but went in the opposite direction and settled on Earth.

The Colonials created the Cylons (in TNS, TOS they were made by another race that died off). There was a war with the Cylons revolting that lasted many years. A cease fire was made and the Cylons left to make their own world. To cut the story short they along with the traitor Baltar used a new navigational software in the Colonial Military to disable the fleet when they launched a sneak attack. The Galactica, the only Battlestar we know off who didn't have networked computers wasn't effected and lead the remaining survivors of mankind on a quest to find the 13th tribe and survive.

I strongly suggest watching the mini-series (first movie length episodes) to understand what is going on. The series does get a little dry at times, as all series do but it's well worth getting into.

Does it explain why the people of Earth no longer have Space Ships, but the other Colonies do?

The series does get a little dry at times, as all series do but it's well worth getting into.I did attempt to some time ago. I saw parts of an episode on TV ages ago, and thought I may as well watch it. I found episode 1, of season 1, but never manged to find the mini-series, and the episode didn't make much sense (because I had no clue what was going on), thus I never got any further.

It starts on the 8th of April in the UK :)So there are five seasons in total (or will be). Or was that 4?

The 4th season is the final one :(

Some good news though, there's gonna be a spinoff called Caprica

In the old series, do the Colonials ever reach Earth? And if so, what happens? Are the Cylons defeated by then, or do they take over Earth or what? :?

BSG TOS was cancelled before they ever found Earth. There was a short lived revival called Galactica 1980 set many years later. In that series they did find earth but were shocked to find how primitive we still were and were concerned that the Cylons would wipe us out too.

G1980 was a kids show and not very good and it is not considered by fans to be part of the canon universe with the exception of one episode. Its episodes centre around two new pilots trying to find a way to advance earths tech and culture to a point where they can defend against the Cylons

Actually I just bought Galactica 1980 and it wasn't as bad as I remembered it was. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit for a 1980's production. Even saw the wires that supended the actors in space to make it appear as if they were floating.

1980 was the last season of TOS BSG and didn't have any conclusion to it, no doubt it was simply cancelled. They found the Earth and as Rod said they were in the 1980's so were more helpless than the Galactica.

The first three episodes were about stopping a renegade Galactican from going back to Nazi Germany and speeding up Earth's technology. The next two was about integrating some Galactican children into Earth's population after their freighter was destroyed by Cylons. The next one had the renegade returning and attempting to use the children as bargaining chips for his freedom the next two had the Cylons crash land in New York on Halloween and the two main warriors of the series attempting to stop them. The Next episode had to do with farming after the fleets argo ships were destroyed by Cylons and the final one revealed the fate of Starbuck and his efforts of survival and friendship with a Cylon and the true origins of Doctor Zee.

They deemed the Human race "unworthy of survival. Because of God's will and so on. Worthy to be mentioned here is, that the Colonials are polytheistic, while the Cylons are strictly monotheistic.

You were watching "33" then... the Cylons track the Galactica + civilian ships and jump in every 33 seconds.
Eventually a starship goes missing after one FTL-jump, but re-appears later (the "Olympic Carrier"). Father'S son "Apollo" and blunt blonde "Starbuck" check out the ship and find out, that there are no survivors on the "Carrier" and the Galactica detects a radiological siganture aka the Carrier is a flying nuke.
The Olympic carrier is shot down by Apollo, who has doubts about it at least until the end of Season 3 :)

3 Seasons "on air" with the 4th one to be on the screen soon :D

I love that show....

Yeah basically the conflict between the Cylons and the Colonials was a religious one.

Can't wait for season 4! :)

Yeah I only buy the DVD's, the networks here put the show on at strange times and move them around on occassions without warning. That and TV in this country sucks, and the only show I actually watch on TV is Doctor Who when it's on the rest I don't bother and wait for the DVD's.

Well, I thank all of you for the replies. I have no plans this weekend. I think I'll have to do a little scouting around for BSG, and will (if I can find it) start watching. ;)

Well... I apologise in advance for the double post. Was going to watch BSG over the weekend, though haven't yet. Have searched quite a few places, and simply can't find the mini-series.

I wish to watch these before I devolve into the actual show, else I wont understand what is going on. Does anyone know of a place that I can get them (names only, I doubt Majestic will be too pleased with links).

You may be in luck Ash, even if you aren't able to find and watch the miniseries, this Tuesday there's 3 programs starting from 9:00pm on Sky One about the last 3 series:

Battlestar Galactica: Revisited - This program recaps the events of the last 3 series (something that would help anyone who wants to watch the 4th series who hasn't seen the first 3). 9:00pm - 9:30pm

Battlestar Galactica: Phenomenon - This program shows the effects of the show on modern culture, and is commentated by various celebrities. 9:30pm - 10:00pm

Battlestar Galactica: Razor - This feature length program follows the events of Lee Adama's first mission as commander of the Battlestar Pegasus, and shows the story of the Pegasus after surviving the attack on the Colonies. 10:00pm - 11:50pm

Hope this helps you :)

Well Dan, the info is great, thanks. Shall keep that in mind. However, a recap isn't quite the same as watching the whole thing, so I think, before I start watching BSG, I'll have to find the original mini-series. :)

And Wheller, if you've got your whole family on it, that must be saying something. :lol2:

just a warning though... basically my entire family foudn the new version.. disappointing.

they missed a lot of the fun themes of the original and substituted it with what i can only call an under realised second rate religious theme that doesn't make any real sense...

enjoy the series if you can, buit most of us stopped watching it a long time ago adn really aren't going to be tempted back by the soap opera love triangles and swiss cheese story twists that have been showing up in the later series.

That one can even be seen with only a little knowledge beforehand. There is not too much stuff in it that is not explained in the movie itself.
