View Full Version : New Star Trek Series Idea

You'll probably think I'm mad but i've chewed over this a fair bit now, and I wondered if anyone thought it was a good idea. I got the idea while making KA2 listening to David Bowie

Basically, premise is this.

Starfleet Captain, either male or female, probably Human just to keep things fairly simple (you'll see what I mean later) on duty on a starship in the mid 23rd Century, kind of First Contact type era.

Pilot episode starts with normal goings on, introducing a few characters and so forth, and then the main character enters the holodeck. At some point during their little recreational activity, the ship is ambushed by the Borg.

Due to critical damage to ship systems, the character is stuck in the holodeck, panicking and trying to disengage it. Another few shots to the hull, and the character is jolted around, and is knocked unconcious.

They awake in a sickbay, but something is wrong. Something is different. It soon becomes aparent that they have somehow ended up onboard a 22nd Century Starship, probably Constitution Refit (again you'll see why later).

Now, the character has to struggle to adapt to this new environment, and work out whether they are stuck in a holodeck program, whether this is part of a Borg assimilation procedure (to keep the victim compliant and calm while the transformation takes place) or whether they really are somehow back in time.

Basically yes, its "Life on Mars meets Star Trek" but, I thought it would allow some interesting comparisons. I wanted the main character to be human so that cultural references to today (what Roddenberry used as the plotlines for almost all TOS episodes) would be easier, and I thought a conny would be a good ship since the main character would be unlikely to have served on one before (unlike the Miranda or Excelsior, since they are still in common use in the 23rd Century). All helps the feeling of being "a fish out of water".

Remember "Trials and Tribulations" how they kind of had in-jokes for Star Trek fans (O'Brien and Siskos discussion about uniform colours, Bashir going ookie over Jadzia in a dress) but did it in a fun, immersive in-universe kind of way. I would want this series to be more gritty than that, dealing with the clashes between a peace-loving, reasonable Captain of a 23rd Century starship being thrown back as a First Officer to the "shoot first ask questions later" environment of the 22nd Century Klingo-Federation Cold War. You could have Captain Styles of Star Trek III fame as the Captain, as he was a sort of uptight "do it my way or else" kind of Captain, not the "lets all hug and talk about it" style of Janeway or Picard.

From what I've heard online, Trials and Tribulations, and the Excelsior flashback episode on Voyager were very popular, and I certainly enjoyed them, especially seeing the 22nd Century again.

So, inspiration from Life on Mars aside, would it be a truely different and original series? and would you watch it?

Hm, since I like TOS very much I'd watch it. Especially because of the "don't ask, do it!" style of command.

Bring in some MACO or Fed Marines and let an Ex-Marine advise 'em about tactics and it will be my favourite Trek show.

I love it when the peaceful TNG pacifists clash with the hardfacts.

Well tis meant to be more TMP than TOS, but, hey either would work, I just prefer TMP, and the uniform styles and so forth just work better for the contrast with TNG.

Sounds interresting, but you may have mixed the centuries some. The Constitution refit didn't appear before the 23. century, and the TNG series happens in the 24. century.

PS.: A little hint; we are now in the 21. century and the NX01 was on it's journeys in the 22. century. :)

AH yes, bugger, I meant 2200s, not 22nd Century.

But you all knew that right? *sheepish*

sounds more like a mission than a whole sim....

I think you might have trouble sustaining it for long periods...but then i thought the same about life on mars, and you were talking about a series not a sim..

but sounds at least an interesting twist on the dimensional shift idea.

Yes, we get the idea. Don't feel bad SJ. I sometimes do the same thing.

Now, about the idea... I like the idea a lot. I would love to see a fan made TMP series that was "serious"... I myself would nitpick the little details, like green screen blur and such. But that's just me. In other words, if you could pull it off right, I'd really be your number one fan on this I think.:)

Now, How are your thinking of going about making this?

I would suggest something like Hidden Frontier... one episode every 2-3 months. so you could make 5-7 episodes a year.

Well, tisn't really something i could realistically do, just wondered if anyone thought it was a good idea or if i was alone :)

I like it better than another TNG era series.

tbh ive never really watched TOS so i dont feel i could comment, i would probably watch the first one, but as i saw life on mars (probably going n 6000 times now :p) im not sure if id be able to get past the parallels in the plot lines. i like to see more or less original thigns, well, mainly original things to me anyway.

Well, people initially tried to claim Life on Mars was more or less Crime Traveller meets the Sweeney, but look at it now, very original feel and extremely entertaining.

Maybe I could call this series (given the downturn in the francise)

(Is there) "Life in Trek?"

;)

The idea is certainly here... Just need to get someone to produce it.

I'd do away with the Constitution Refit though.. Maybe a Constellation Class? Or perhaps a new type of vessel? We could always see Constitution Class vessels in the series, but for a series to be based upon one, I'm not too sure about.

I think having the Constituion-Refit would be the best possible idea for the 'hero' ship in this series proposal. Whenever anyone thinks of TMP-era of Trek the first hing that comes to mind is the Connie, followed by the Excellsior. Even tho the Constellation is supposed to be TMP-era, we didn't get introduced to one till TNG.

Well, personally, I think the overall concept seems nice, but I would really want the next ST series to be set in TLE (The Lost Era).:D

The TLE does need attention. There is so much that could be done...

i personally would love to see Star Trek: New Frontier fleshed out. it was a series of books regarding the U.S.S. Excalibur, an ambassador class ship exploring the now collapsed Thallonian empire. in the book, there are TNG characters that are familiar.

Commander Shelby is first officer (best of both worlds)
Dr Selar: worked with Dr. Pulaski and Dr. Crusher aboard the Enterprise-D

i own some of the books and found them to be REALLY good reads.
