Word has trickled down the pipe that Paul McGillion ("Dr. Carson Beckett" of Stargate Atlantis) recently auditioned for the role of Montgomery Scott in the eleventh "Star Trek" motion picture. From the mouth of Paul himself, GateWorld is pleased to confirm that this is so!

"I can't tell you a whole lot," McGillion said, "but I can confirm that I did indeed audition for the role of Scotty in the new 'Star Trek' movie. It was obviously thrilling to be able to go in and read for that character, seeing as I grow up watching Star Trek with my family."

It's no surprise that Scotty was McGillion's favorite Trek character while growing up, considering both have roots in Scotland. Additionally, both actors have roots in Vancouver. "It was a great honor [to audition], and obviously I don't want to sound cliché about it, but it would be a privilege to try to follow in James Doohan's footsteps."

Doohan's son, Chris, campaigned for his father's old role, but has stepped aside and endorsed McGillion instead. "I know that the chances that I would be the next Scotty are slim to none," Doohan told TrekMovie.com. "That being said, I think Paul McGillion is a GREAT choice for the role of Scotty. He has a great accent and I think that he actually looks like my father."

"I can't say enough about that," Paul told us. "Thank you, Chris Doohan! I've never met him. That was really a surprise and a thrill. He said some nice things about me. That's really kind of him. I'm absolutely overwhelmed by that."

Stick with GateWorld for more with Paul McGillion later this week!

Well this is interesting to say the least, though I can't see him as Scotty only has Carson Beckett, being on of my two favourite characters of the Atlantis show.

Sad to hear he didn't, STXI would have almost been palatable for me with McGillion in it...

I think they could do a lot worse.

Although the way i remember it scotty was a bit more excitable than Carson....

It's a shame he didn't get it, I think he would've been a good Scotty

Its for the best, he could evade an exploding tumor, so how good would he be at fixing the warp core???

NNOOOOOOOO!!

I thoguth the guy (espescially as in the role of Carson) was a great actor. and i would have actually gone to see star trek XI if he was in it, espescially as scotty (one of the few TOS characters i can stand... there! i said it!)

The only way i can see them rdeeming themselves is if somehow they get Christopher Judge as spok... some how...

sorry for double post.

This has to be a joke!

I was on Wikipedia looking over the information for the Star Trek XI film, and apparently the person who beat Paul Mcgillion was.... SIMON PEGG!

for those of you who dont know his name, he is the guy from spaced, Shaun from Shaun of the Dead, and most recently in Run Fat boy Run.

Someone... please tell me this is a joke!? He does comedy... or am i missing somethign about this film?

(btw the link is Star Trek (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_%28film%29) )

Yeah, I was less than pleased when I saw the replacement, and haven't they already cast Spock?

Simon Pegg doesn't even look a bit like Scotty.
Man I'm sure Star Trek 11 is going to be the worst star trek movie ever!!!

Definitely no joke:

he does indeed do comedy...

and is fairly good at it.

but yup can you really see tht going down well in a serious role.

Scotty may have had a sense of humour but this is the same man who has to get away with lines like... "she cannae take nae more captain"
and "I'm givin her all she's got"

preferably with a straight face..
