"Doug Liman Producing New Knight Rider Series
Source: Variety September 27, 2007
NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," hiring Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) to produce a Transformers-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.
Variety says the network is developing a two-hour pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature schedule allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.
Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside executive producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Productions.
The trade says the success of Transformers had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that small screen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.
It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original series, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, the series is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car."
Much as I love the original Knight Rider, i only have one thing to say to this:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOO!!!
They've tried remakin it before. Knight Rider 2000, which was sorta 'meh' even though the pilot movie starred the Hoff, William Daniels (kitts voice) and Edward Mulhare.
Knight Rider 2010 - absolutely dire - the 'bad' car was built out of a wrecked stealth fighter after some sort of mad max inspired apocalyse, and the good guys car was I think a mustang with a heck of a lot of body armour and a rocket launcher in one of its front lights, and couldnt talk or do anything cool by itself until it was taken over by some holographic representation/ghost (memories a bit fuzzy on that) - it was godawful.
Team Knight Rider - worse than 2000, better than 2010. not that thats saying much. Had some memorable bits scattered between episodes, and 1 episode that was brilliant (KRO) and was good enough to get one season (2010 was a bad TV movie, and 2000 was supposed to be a TV movie/pilot show - apparently 6 episodes were filmed but never aired) which is more than the others did, but still not all that great.
I cant see any attempt at revival going well. The Hoff's been tryin to get a movie version made for the last couple of years and last i heard it fell through - because the studio wanted the car to not talk
if they remake it, i will give it a fair go, but i fully expect badness.

he'd be too old for it now anyway - unless they had it as a kind of sequel, with the Hoff's "Michael Knight" character acting more in Devon's role overseeing some new kid - which was the proposed plot for one of the movies they talked about and never materialised

the whole idea of it makes me want to go out and commit random acts of violence lol. well, maybe not random. more like directed at the 'geniuses' that want to revive it. theyve tried and failed before. learn the lesson already producers!
I don't know, this could be good. Depends what they do. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the original - have all the boxsets and am extremely envious of the guy that shops in Asda with a black TransAm :cry2: - but I don't think they done as much as they could.
Now there is such a thing as using a good name to much, look at Trek and what happened there. A Knight Rider: The Next Generation series would most likely have flopped more than a dead flower in the middle of winter which had just been trod on by a rather large bovine.
But, a new series after such a long time could be good. If they done it right. A few things that should be done in my opinion are these:
Avoid:
- Same actors. I liked KITT and his voice as much as anyone; but voices age and not to mention the fact that Hasselhoff was the worst choice for Knight that anyone could possibly make.
- Same plot. Set it a few years after, don't try to re-invent what works.
- A wholly CGI car. On a TV budget it won't work. It'd be better to have both a physical and computer prop
Include:
- Cameos and references. As much as we may not like it, Hasselhoff was part of the Knight Rider lineage so make a brief appearance as some sort of old man in a mental asylum saying things about talking cars.
- The idea of shape-shifting. If they can pull this off and make it look good then I'll watch the series. Of course ILM would be the best choice for this but I don't think they'd accept.
- Good voice actors. Peter Cullen would make an excellent voice for the car. And maybe a nice touch would be Frank Welker lending his talents to the arch-enemy.
Just my thoughts.

See, now theres a contradiction. For anyone who doesn't know, Peter Cullen provided the voice of Karr, Kitts evil 'twin' in "Trust doesn't Rust" - Karr being the original prototype vehicle built by Knight Industries and deactivated for being self serving and basically a danger to anyone in its way as it was programmed to put itself before anyone else...
Though to be fair, Karr did sound ace in that appearance. and was waaaaaay cooler than Kitt in my opinion...

whole series is out on dvd currently if you want it
worth getting :)
all I can say is that UNless it has the Hoff and a 3rd gen trans am in it its not gonna work. But hopefully itll make the value of my car go up if it does.
(Btw ive got a Firebird that looks almost exactly like K.I.T.T.)

im so jealous of you right now. i always wanted one of those :(
judgin by the spoiler and wheel trim, yours is the '89 model, yes?
then again, they were interchangable, even the spoiler, so u cud easily convert the 89 to look like the 82 model. and vice versa i suppose...
(and before anyone contradicts, ive read about that on a site that deals extensively with customing pointiacs into kitt/karr)

Knight Rider Jr:
E! News - NBC's Son of Knight Rider - David Hasselhoff (http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=d421c6a3-e093-4c23-89a5-ad3f80f40ed8&entry=index)
"It looks like KITT has himself a new partner.
NBC has tapped soap star Justin Bruening to front a new Knight Rider TV movie that could serve as a pilot to a revived series based on the '80s action-adventure about a crimefighter and his talking Trans-Am.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, the 28-year-old actor will play the son of Michael Knight, the original series' hero played by David Hasselhoff."
Interesting.
Not so sure on the whole Bot idea, sounds too cheesey even for Knight Rider and pretty blatantly taking off transformers following the success of the movie.
I still dont think its gonna work. especially if its not Kitt :D
lets face it guys... there is no way they could actuallly recreate the show any mroe than they could recreate the original galactica...
nobody would get away with being that up beat, overly moralistic and ... mulleted these days.

to be fair, i think the remake is a heck of a lot better than the original (meaning galactica obviously)
As for knight rider - any other attempt at a spin off has failed miserably. I dont think they can ever revive this one

travesty. complete travesty.
And two different vehicles anyway. different rear air scoop, and different wheel rims.
and where's the trademark LED on the front, or have they got rid of it like they did for *shudder* TKR?
Didnt the remake get canned completely anyway cos of the writers strike?
They should use an Aston Martin DBS, itd look much better :D
ahhh but does it do the red light thing....
that looked so very funky back then

To Australian viewers:
Andrew Mercado in yesterday's Sydney Sunday Telegraph reports that the new series will be coming on Australian TV possibly on 7.
Isn't that the problem with any remake? I will give it a chance when it comes out.
I'm not saying I won't give it a chance. the plot still sounds intriguing, though not as good as the original IMO. Though i dont understand why David is making a Michael Knight cameo, even though it seems completely unrelated to the original. Maybe the mustang is a new shell developed for Kitt by a foundation scientist? who knows. certainly its worthy of taking a look.
As for the red light, when i say it wouldnt look right, i mean it wouldnt look right on the mustang... its far too angular and hard looking for something like that. Indeed, neither the atrocity that was 2010, nor TKR had the red light on their cars (though to be fair to TKR, they included a '99 Mustang Cobra which would have been ok, an F-150, a Ford Expedition SUV and 2 motorcycles - not to mention KRO, the F-355 which would have looked kick *** with the red light... or some representation of it. lets not forget, Karr was kitts twin, but had a gold light...). Nor did the Knight 4000 from Knight Rider 2000 (which reunited the original cast, except Bonnie and April and also featured Mitch Pileggi and Sam Carter's father from Stargate), until Michael installed Kitt's CPU into it. Which would also have looked cool had the car not been candy apple red too... (and i dont mean Michael's 57 Chevy Bel Air. That was blue.)
TBH, the best bet would have been to go back to Knight Rider 2000 and continue from there, as it is so far the only spin off to do well ratings wise.
Well... the teasers look promising anyway:
YouTube - knight rider teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4LT3qWC6QY&feature=related)
YouTube - nbc new knight rider 30 second teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HguYIq_cfd8&feature=related)
It does look promising. Enough to make me want to give it a decent chance anyway. Although that car still isnt Kitt. even if they did get the lights right :D
But hearing him say Mike, not Michael... i cant stand it!
That looks surprisingly good actually... enough at least for me to try. Other than that I can't say but, yeah I'll give it a go.
I'd even say that the car looks even more of a successor to KITT than the other designs, such as the 4000 or any of the Team Knight Rider vehicles (apart from the plane:lol: )

looks good enough to give it a go. I still think they'd be better off using Pontiacs latest firebird/trans-am equivalent (please god not the godawful solstice tho lol) rather than a mustang. at least they got kitts attitude right, even if the voice is... well, its just not Kitt lol. Kitt never said Mike, even when insulting him in Knight Rider 2000
Only problem with the Knight 4000 was the colour. it'd have been far more suitable in black than in bright red lol. not a fan of any of the TKR designs apart from the Ferrari they used in 'KRO' - the one that was evil lol.

looks good, lets see how much they screw it up....
well... considering that the plot description is more follow up than remake (for example, the hoff makes a cameo as michael knight, and the show is supposedly following his son) from what i've read it could be ok.
then again, tkr and 2010 were downright awful. Knight Rider 2000 apparently got a good response audience wise, and was going to be made into a series, but for some reason, that was cancelled. there are rumours that 6 episodes after the pilot were filmed, but were never aired. which is a shame, because it was surprisingly good.

did we whatch the same film?
did we whatch the same film?
the one with the red Pontiac Banshee lookalike (lookalike because they wanted to use the Pontiac, but weren't allowed because it was a concept car, so they made a look alike based on the shell from a dodge stealth)?
it was good, but each to their own i guess. it apparently did well in audience ratings, so it cant have been that bad.
I quite liked Team Knight Rider.
Admittedly, I saw it when I was young and before I watched an episode of the original; but from what I can remember it was good in both premise and execution.
Knight Rider 2000 was alright, but I never really thought the plot was very thick. It seemed to me that it was more of a series finale than the start of a possible knew series. Especially when Devon died and Kitt's original body was s****ped.
I'd watch KR2000 again, but would probably not enjoy it as much as the series.

it wont be as good as the original though.
Yet another clip, and little sound bites from cast and crew:
YouTube - two minute new knight rider preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e9wgshS0qI)
The good news is, its now ok to like the new KITT lol. Because its not KITT.
The new car is the Knight Industries 3000, as opposed to the Trans-am from the original series which (for anyone who doesnt know) was the Knight Industries 2000.
According to most sources its not clear if its brand new AI in a new car, or an upgraded vehicle for the original AI - since this is supposedly a continuation of the original show, not a remake.
My bet is that they go the same route as Knight Rider 2000 - they'll make the new car (in this case, the 3000 as opposed to the Knight 4000 from KR 2000) and then implant the original KITT AI into it - certainly the clip where the new KITT says "they never learn" seems to imply that...
Indeed, now that I am sure its not a remake then the chance of success are higher.
I'm not gonna agree on the original AI thing for one simple reason - that'll split the old fans between who likes the new KITT and who hates the way the old one was put inside it.
Rather, I'd suggest that the memory of it was downloaded into the new one - so that it can remember being KITT even though it's KITT, not KITT :?
Erm...can we have another acronym please, this is getting confusing
Borg_Queen

I'm really looking forward to it. :D
By the way, even though also this car is named KITT, for it to be not confusing say KITT2.
Indeed, now that I am sure its not a remake then the chance of success are higher.
It certainly makes it more appealing to me, especially knowing that the new car, isn't KITT, and isnt supposed to be. and while i'm not swearing to it, I'm speculating a Knight 2000 cameo appearance too, since the 3rd clip shows the steering wheel from the original, and it looks to be in place too...

I think its likely... granted its Will Arnett, not William Daniels doing the voice so he sounds different, but at the same time, its like he's tried (and failed) to impersonate Daniels, because it sounds like Arnett tries to speak the same way Daniels did as Kitt with only partial success, and captures the same attitude.
So my personal belief is that theyre putting the original AI into a new shell, like they did in Knight Rider 2000. I can live with it, although i'd still rather the Trans-am returned lol. guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out

Well on Feb. 17th, I know exactly where I will be that evening.... watching the new Knight Rider. Since this is a true sequel, I think I am already a fan based on the previews.
I would like to have seen a more exotic car (like a Ferrari or something along that line of elite cars), but the Cobra Mustang will do.:)

i still have my doubts, but i have a lot more enthusiasm and desire for it to do well since finding out its a sequel, not a remake, and that even though the cars called Kitt, its not THE Kitt. Or at least, the shell isnt. If it was a remake and they said that was the 2000, i'd be upset lol

found some publicity shots :-
looks cool.... though i'd love to know how they're visualising the voice in the car. like in the original, KITT had the red VDU with the oscillating red bars - Karr having a similar one but in green.
Or the Knight 4000 in KR 2000 with its oscilloscope representation of the cars voice..
Or in *shudder* Team Knight Rider, each car had a wireframe display in its monitor (that moved to a smaller representation in the corner when in use) that changed from green to red as the car spoke...
Personally, i hope they use something similar to the original car but sorta... i dunno, newer somehow

I loved the original Knight Rider series and strangely enough, I loved Team Knight Rider. I'm holding off on making any snap judgements on whether it'll be good, bad, or just sucks - to which I have lately been given to doing. I think, if done right, we'll get ourselves a superb reimagining worthy of the Annals of Sci-Fi History. Done wrong, well, wouldn't be the first time they screwed up a show we all love. If it just sucks, I owe some people money.
Methinks it may be a good show. (Can't be any worse than Viper...)

i've been trying not to judge it lol, and certainly, the information thats coming out (continutation not remake, the car is A kitt, not THE kitt) has made me more receptive to it... im lookin forward to it now, and hope its good... then we'll have knight rider back on the screens lol  :D
yet another new trailer for it... seems to be re-using an old gag from the original series lol...
YouTube - new knight rider - valet 20 second commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZa6g6ic3ho)
And another new video clip, this time showing us a bit of the action, and the inside of the car, and the first view of its voice display - seems to be a mix of the ones used in Knight Rider 2000 and Team Knight Rider to me:

The AI sounds pretty aggressive too.
In other news, Will Arnett has dropped out as the voice of the car due to contract conflicts (he's the voice over guy for GMC truck adverts, and obviously the new car is basically a Ford).
The car is now being voiced by Val Kilmer
Yet another trailer for anyone who is still interested:

NBC seems to be really hyping this up now as it gets closer.
seems like a new trailer comes out every week for it.

One thing i dont get.. the original Kitt was virtually indestructible. bullets just bounced off it. So why does this ones windows break at all? the regeneration effect where the car repairs itself is cool, but why does it need it? the cars supposed to be an upgrade, so surely it too should be virtually indestructible...
Looks good, waiting with baited breath for the UK release.
About the windows - even bullet proof glass scratches, an auto repair system gets rid of all that.
Plus it looks quite good :D

In an episode (don't remember the name) of the original series, it was said that the glass was something better than bulletproof. The bullets ricocheted back to the shooter if shot at the windows. That means the glass was not glass, but something else (a new material made for the series and only in the series).
Can't wait for the new series to get to Norway, by the way. :D

Probably the very first episode, and likely any other too. the entire car was coated with a "molecular bonded shell" which supposedly rendered it virtually indestructible. Except it could still be damaged by heavy artillery, or by other objects coated with the same shell and much more massive than itself (eg Goliath), and the shell could also be broken down with a 'base agent' (s4, knight of the juggernaut). In any case, it rendered the windows and shell completely unbreakable. which leads me to:

a fair point, though you seem to have missed mine...which was that the original car was virtually indestructible, thus bullets had no effect on the windows whatsoever. no scratches, certainly no spider web effect when struck like in this trailer. so why isnt the new car equipped with the same shell, instead of this fancy nanotech thing it has now?
Can't wait for the new series to get to Norway, by the way. :D
Me either, like amateur for the UK release. Hence why my mates downloading it for me, because someone will likely upload it. its how i'm on series 3 of supernatural, season 7 of smallville (e4 has only recently started showing 6) and why im waiting for BSG series 4 lol (season 1 hasnt even aired on terrestrial tv here yet, only sky!).
yet another reason to love the internet lol!
