hey guys
Has someone thought about grouping the fighters on squadrons?? It has been done for battlestar armada and, i got to say, the pics look pretty amazing. That way we could keep them with a more canon size compared to the ships.
So what do you think??

Squadrons would be cool. I dont know if we'll be doing that or not but I think it's been talked about before.

Its actually quite simple to do if they are units. All you need are two sods, a single fighter and a group/squadron of fighters. Then make a new fusion weapon from the stock Borg fusion weapon and wolla you have playable fighter squadrons.

Note: You need to make unit odfs too.

imagine for example a group of 4 small f-302s instead on having 1 big fighter I think it's better that way

i remember us taking about it, but we just wanted to get all the models done first then focus on ODF's

errr.... speaking about the models, i haven't heard nor seen nothing about them since the stargate project forums crushed.
Will someone put here the progres pages??

I would if I had access to them, but we will have to wait till CDP and his team comes by here again.

Topic Split.

If I am correct (and I think I am) would this 'squad' not be one single mesh? That being, they'd ALL move together, and they'd be fixed in a formation? They have something like this in the Bablon 5 Mod. I don't really like it because it doesn't give the ships the freedom they should have.

i could create it as an animated mesh. but its something id have to look into :) ive created animated models in the passed

Yes the mesh could be animated. Like the EF destroyer in the B5 mod, it had a rotating section.
But it would still act as only one ship. Also, once 'joined' into a squadron there would be no way to break it apart.

tbh i dont see the problem having it as one mesh,

personally i would preffer this, as when would you send one single fighter into battle?

It will allow the player to gain a sense of scale about their armadas, keep the ships cannon size (or near enough) and would probably make combining them to a carrier easier.

BTW i cant remember which mod it was but someone has managed to get a prometheus (ST model) to use Galaxy seperation, if anyone could find out how, then that would definately help sort out the carrier thing.

Yes, the Galaxy's saucer separation is the only thing that would allow (in Armada II) Fighters/ fighter squadron to be spawned from a carrier and then be rejoined with the carrier. The problem with using this is that it is hard coded into A2. So you could only use it on one ship, one race.

yeah i knew that, which is why i pointed out that someone managed to get the ST preometheus to seperate.

however, could we not just use teh borg seperation? just change it a little?

i dont think it will work actually but anyone thoguht about that? like can one ship be "fusioned" into 2? (btw i know this is a contradiction of terms) and obviously 2 can be fused into 1

I've seen a version of the Prometheus with MVAM. But it was quite buggy, you were able to separate that one ship into more than the the three or four sections that it was supposed to. And then getting them to re-integrate was a pain.

I had thought about the cube fusion special weapon, (we discussed it on the old project forum) and played around with it, but was not able to get it to change. When I tried the game crashed and well I just left it at that. Though someone more adept at moding A2 might be more successful.

But if you have several fighters in one mesh, if one of the ships is hit with weapons and is destroyed, aren't all the others destroyed as well?

Jeddy

thats very true, but you would be targetting the squadren as opposed to an individual ship.

and to even that out more, it may/should just be a case of balancing out the stats.

If it is done, imo it should be done the way that the ppl working on the BSG mod are doing it, with several versions of the fusion weapon for different purposes (1 fighter for scouting, 2 for patrol e.t.c).

This way, ppl who want to use one fighter can, and ppl who want to use squadrons can as well.

I imagine that will be how the SGP team would do it, as you can then fuse your squadrons together.

Its unfortunate that A2 does not support fighters, it was never designed for them. Something we will be making sure will work in Red Ash. :)
