View Full Version : Download times
What is it that affects download times?
At the moment it’s taking me an incredibly long time to download anything
Its been going as slow as 0.9 kb/s at some points.
This is happening with everything I download. At this speed the 640 MB path for medieval 2 is a big no no
Does any1 know what’s wrong? Do I have spy ware or something?
It could actually be a small number of things. What type of connection are you on?
um how do i find out?
im on broadband if thats what u meen

that a lost better
Dsl ?
I dont know how do i find out
It's simple, Does you connection come from a Coax "TV" cable (into a cable modem, then into your PC via a CAT 5 or CAT 6 cable) or are you using a "phone line" (that plugs into your DSL modem, then a thicker CAT 5 or CAT 6 cable from there to your PC)?
Here's mine:

I'm running a Cable connection.
EDIT: Cylon, I looked up your provider, it's an 128k ISDN access.
Mine is pityful

I cant take the credit i was shown it by one of the Techs at the base
Cylon, your connection is about right for an ISDN line.
The common things that effect ISDN:
Server resources. If the server you connected to is busy with lots of traffic, then it will slow you down.
Server issues. If the server is having hardware problems, then it will cause minor issues at first, then later major problems.
Line quality. If the quality of the line has been degraded by any means, then it will serve to slow down your connection. This can be at your end, or the ISP end.
PC problems. If your computer is having problems with specific components, it can slow down, and make the web connection slow as well.
Modem problems. If you modem is starting to fail, the first sign is the loss in speed. Be luck if you get this. Modems often stop working, with little or no warning.
And the list of small things that can affect your connection quality are in the hundreds. Most of these, there is nothing you can do about it. But you can run tests on your system (Benchmark tests are a good start), to help find problems.
Ive checked on the virgin media website and it says they are doing maintinace so thats probably it.
There you have it. That would cause a slow down on speed. The have to port all the traffic from a server they are working on to another server. It makes sense.
