Yesteryears Publicly Canceled

Due to this thread on A2Files and it's topic about the MS3D non-stock importer and the thread starter hosting it and linking it through this signature even after the Administration decided not to have in on A2Files including these Gaming Forum I am hereby Publicly announcing Yesteryears canceled.

I have always been strongly committed to completing both Yesteryears and Parallels and I at the very first time of seeing that thread made my intentions clear on what I would do if that importer was made public.

I am sorry it has come to this but I will not allow the teams hard work, either teams hard work to be so easily ripped off and claimed as someone Else's.

I certainly don't blame you for doing this, but as someone who has had the importer for a while I am a little more self conscious that my models may be ripped off by someone. With that in mind I'm not too worried about it, personally I'd be far more worried about the textures being used elsewhere than the models in particular. After all, if the person with the importer is new, they likely cant texture for **** and the model will look like crud and never be downloaded anyway. If they know what they are doing then I'd have to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that they aren't stupid enough to not credit someone for their work. I've been in this boat before, you can't exactly watermark a model like you can an image...

With that note I'm glad to see that the project will continue as I most certainly look forward to it's release Majestic.

i'm sorry to hear that.

As i said before, the utility is effectively now killing off the community. While i do think that if people want the utility, they'll find it, and theres nothing we can do to stop it, im disappointed by Book's attitude, as it is now already costin us fantastic looking, long awaited mods.

And personally, id rather see good, high quality mods, than some utility that in my opinion will only reduce the quality of materials for the community because of the new modellers short cutting it, rather than learning it properly for themselves.

im not meanign to make myself sound good.

AS most of you probably know (espescially Majest and Syf as ive no end of Noob questions that ive been asking them) im pretty new on this whole mod thing, i came here as part of the SGP team, and now i have my own mod starting up.

but personally, i would have no interest in that tool, as the FUN of making a mod is to create your own ships, put in your own touches, any ship i make will never be completely canon, as id put in my own lil "touch of Jeddy" into it, as should any other artist out there, and thats what modellers are.

Just because there are a few new people out there who dont seem to understand that, why should the rest of the community suffer?

Your not a modder if you havent tried everything yourself.

ill own up that the ship that i have just got in game (unfinished mind you) was not completed by me, i had trouble with HPs so i called in the experts. if someone has a problem modellign they should just practice, or get help. at the very least if they HAVE to use someone elses model what is the harm in asking nicely?

It's a shame, it truly is. Your mods are some of the ones I was looking forward to, and it will be sad if I don't get to play them lol.

This sucks.

Granted , my own modding skills are fairly pathetic in regards to modelling and texturing and most have never seen the light of day save for a few models that were given , by me , to others who could actually do something with them and make them look respectable.

I'm of the mind that it's a trial and error process , a long road to being "skilled". I know it took me many months of practice and game crashes to get some of my attempts up and going on SFC3 and I'm still learning and still not ready to showcase ANYTHING at all because I'm not happy with how my stuff looks.

What kills me is that , yes , there are a-holes out there that will steal your work. I've seen it done twice on SFC3 by people that I've played with (one was a member of my own Seventh T.R. Fleet) and worked with for many years.

What sucks is that while not everyone out there who gets the utility will steal the files , enough will to upset the right person , who just puts the brakes on what they're doing , thus robbing more people of something they've looked forward to and/or worked on for a long time.

A really good friend of mine was trying to build a patch for MW4 Mercenaries that would give three Classic Battletech Mechs (Archer , Commando , and Starslayer) to those he trusted. One of his other friends managed to crack the code and released it early , making the models look like crap because they weren't properly textured or modelled at that time. My friend promptly said , "Screw it." and cancelled the pack , robbing those of us who were waiting six months for it of a great "expansion."

What Book said at #58 ,

"Cancel your mods? Go ahead, I honestly really don't care, the community should have this tool, and through it I'm sure someone will learn to make better mods.

That's the kind of thinking that makes someone want to just say , "Screw it."

Noone knows an artist's work like the artist...

That's my thoughts on the matter anyway.

So then you are cancelling both your mods (Yesteryears and Parallels) to the general public outside of this website or cancelling them completely?

Now as for Yesteryears, Syf and I have discussed this and Yesteryears will continue but will only be made available on this website and to those I feel will not re-release any part of the mod. That last part is so someone can't just register download the mod snatch what they want and then re-release it at the other Armada sites.

It is sad that it has come to this, being forced to select those who can have the mod and those who can't but it's the way it's going to have to be since that importer is now pubically available.

All I can say is it's better than the alternative so those who have been strong supporters of the mod over here and I know well are most likely already on the list.

It's just a precaution at this point. If you'll read my reply to the post that announced the unlocked importer, it's because of me as much as Majestic that this is now a limited edition mod. I have worked way to many hours on this mod to let it all be exposed to porting to another game that I don't want it in. Every last model has taken tons of my time to make. So, to that extent, I want a say in where my creations end up.

Any modeler can see my point of view. Modding and modeling are not the same. Modeling takes a lot of skill. After YY and F:RW are completed, I am personally done with Armada modding.

Unfortunately so, but I can assure you that most of you here and especially all the active members here will be getting a completed copy of this mod. So it's not cancelled for you guys just for the general public.

its a shame it came to this, but as i've said privately to majest, i understand and support the position thats been taken.

im not a modeller at all, but i can see why the utility offered by Book has had such a response, and as ive said on filefront, i can only imagine it will be a bad thing for the armada community.

on the upside, Freyr seems to be takin some action regarding Book's actions...

Well it was our decision and we think this is the best way, the olny other alternative is cancel or it make it private just for Syf and myself. Making it this way allows those who have been keen supports to still enjoy the mod once it is completed.
