• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

So the resident noob/curious George has another question. I just upgraded my PC to Win 7 Pro x64 OEM and I was wondering about upgrading my processor. I wouldn't change the mobo, just the proc and I'm finding conflicting info about Windows registration and whatnot.

I don't think changing the proc would matter from all the info I've found, but wanted to know if anyone else has done this and what you found.

As I understand it, the 'you need to re-register because this is a different computer' notice works on a point system. The CPU is worth X points, the GPU is worth Y points, etc. If you do the CPU by itself, then boot the system and let it detect the new part it should accept it just fine. By installing one thing at a time that way you should be able to replace every part in the system without tripping the notice. I'm also pretty sure you can just call tech support and explain what happened and they'll probably fix it.

The Windows Registration is seldom important as its mostly for floor display models to show how Microsoft Rates their system. You don't have to worry about it. What you should worry about is the following.

- The chipset supports the new processor
- the socket fits the new processor
- you have good thermal paste and heat sink
- if you use x64 OS that its a 64-bit processor
- you have the proper voltage and amperage for the processor
