I have always been curious about this, no doubt there is a thread like this either here or tucked away deep on the Filefront forums.

However I am interested. I also added Fleet Operations as while not a game per say, it's been changed enough that it could be considered one.

I started on A1 much like everyone mostly did...i had no idea what i was doing..though. I remember when i first installed the Millenium mod for A1 it had Admiral Riker commanding the AGT Enterprise-D and it used to CTD all the time but i had no idea why...LOL it was fun but frustrating at the same time.

Then i started on my personal A2 mod which was built off of BI2 through BI2:CS... then had some of Yacuzzas Tactical Assault thrown in.. Then BI3 and later BI:VR. Now its been completely moved to FO v 3.1.5 which is the latest before 3.2.2. It gives me sooo much more to work with now that i can have torpedo volleys and burst phasers much like in the shows...

I played Armada I first I think, back in 03 when a friend loaned me the disk. Good times, good times....

Didn't start with any modding until I got to A2 though.

I got a copy of A2 early in 2004, then I discovered a2files in 2006. I remember adding my first mod, which was Porty's Ambassador Class. It was the very first ship that I successfully installed and I was so happy to see it in-game. That pretty much kickstarted my modding career.

I started with Armada 1 and it's still my main focus. A2 was kind of disappointing to be honest.

I started with A2 (actually, I don't have a copy of A1). When I discovered a2files, I had been playing A2 for years, though.

I had A1 and then sold it. I bought A2 and liked what I saw because at the time I was ignorant of the faults it has. My very first mod was placing a cloak onto my Defiants.

I agree in fact I remember getting A2, played it for a couple of hours then closed it and went back to A1, it was like 3 months later that I gave A2 another shot. :lol2:

I played a1 and got hooked at an early age. All I did there was add maps, but after I lost the CD I stoped playing for a long time. around 2003 ish, I got a2 and a few years later started with modding. My first installed mod was the antithesis race from star trek gamers(also on ff) and it still to this day is one of my favorites. I started modding with FO before 3.0 was released(the pr) in my own personal install and the rest is history.

And I agree, compared to a1, the a2 campaign failed, and other than being newer and having better graphics, it really has nothing going for it.

When I started modding it was early in A1's "lifetime". The prevalent modelling software used was Storm 3d Tools, which in A1 allowed you to move and delete vertices, and therefore almost all ship mods were twisted or squashed versions of stock ships. The first ships I downloaded (actually from a site before even StaMods was big, and before AFC or A2Files existed) were:

- Ambassador Class: A squashed and shrunk Galaxy
- Atlantis Class: A scaled up Akira <-(so here it began)
- Forever Class: A Fek'lhr that had been retextured grey (by opening the .sod in notepad)
- Nova Class: A distorted and shrunk Sovereign.

Back in these days I didn't even have Internet, so was going to the library armed with half a dozen floppy disks to save stuff on to... So long ago. It's a bit scary to think that was almost half of my life ago...

But for actually modding itself, would've begun when I got a load of stock odf files and learned the most important line: "builditemX = Y". Once I'd tackled that and freetech.tt, my "Federation" fleets were filled with Klingon, Romulan, Dominion, Cardassian, Son'a, and Ferengi ships :-D

It was A2 era by the time I got into large-scale modding, but yeah, I began with A1.

First play was armada, but I never modded it. Purely because I didn't stumble onto nodding until a2 .

hmmm, Well for me it was Armada 1. My first PC couldn't play it very well so I stumbled through laggy games for a while, I found AFC while looking for ways to tweak the performance. I found the Warlords modding union through AFC and spent ages going through forums and questions (I remember Straxus was a member of the Warlords and maybe Kleotol).

Next up I got a Games PC and downloaded Kleotol's Xtreme mod and I was hooked :) I guess I learnt to mod by looking through those files and making the dominion available to the Klingons.

Next I wanted to creat a full Dominion mod for for Xtreme mod and needed some new units and stations but no one would help me there (In hind sight they were right not to) So I downloaded milkshape, uninstalled milkshape and installed 3Dmax.

I also brought A2, played for half a game and didn't touch it again for a long time until I figured there was no reason I couldn't make it play how I wanted.

If I was to start a mod now it'd be on FO, once their new compressed file system comes out.

OMG. If I remember correctly, max is rather costly. Was it the full thing?

Same here, thouh I can't remember when I got A1 and when I got A2.
However, I started playing Armada I and some time later A2 came a long. Since I sold my A1 disk to a friend, I bought a "Star Trek" package with A1, A2 and ST: Elite Force plus Add-on.
Never really liked "Elite Force", btw. Hasn't much to do with Trek, if you ask me.

When I first had A1, I too didn't have a PC that could run it very well, the nebula were in fact just coloured dots. When I upgraded and actually got a graphics card (rather the the ****py on-board one) I was amazed how much better it looked.

Oh yes, it's the thing that really going to draw modders to the mod I think. Something that A2 should've had to begin with.

Oh I know what you mean, I too have a 2010 version of max.

We're just that old, I bet modern onboards could run it fine.

yeah I got that, but I still need V5 for Armada.

My onboard could play A1 and 2 just fine and it's about 10 or 11 years old now. I suppose it was good at the time, even if I could barely play Halo 1.

Yeah I tried a few years ago to find a copy so I could do animations but was unable to. I wish they offered older versions at a reduced price for something.

I first got A1 in 2000 when it first released, not expecting much from it. At that time I had never known what an RTS was so it was a huge surprise when I could actually command more then one thing at a time. I took me nearly ten minutes to figure out I could even build bases! I got A2 just a few days after it released the following year, needless to say it was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. :cry2:

In terms of modding I stumbled upon a2 files back in 2004, the first mod I downloaded being the Species 9341 full race mod. Over the next few years I'd try out, combine, and mess with mods until I stumbled upon Fleet Ops back in December of 2008, just a day after 3.0 released. Seeing all the new features in FO pretty much convinced me to start on Sigma.

Species 9341 full race mod? Don't they have only two ships? How did they extend them into a full race?

For me I stumbled across the A2 demo about, oh, five years ago now and acquired the full version a few years later. And it worked until something about Windows or my driver changed and then it refused to work. After that I found the Patch Project (also run by the FO devs) and soon after Fleetops. I've been playing FO now for about three years. I didn't ever do much A2 modding; just a few ship mods here and there.

Unfortunately I've never actually played A1 since it refuses to play with more that 2GBs of memory or widescreens. I once tried to play it in a VM, but it was horrible.

I first played Armada I, never even attempted to modify that in any way, shape or form. Heck, I never even knew it was possible. It wasn't until a few years after Armada II came around that I found A2Files and dabbled into the prospect of adding new ships, and changing a few things around.

Obviously we all know where I went from there; not having released a single total conversion, and I think I've attempted this at least three times. hah! I always aimed too high, and continually changed the initial plans so I was never at a steady pace. Shame on me!

I've thought about modifying FleetOps, but I don't really want to get in to modifying any games right now, as I know I'll end up starting something that I wont finish. I've got a few more Zero Hour packages to upload (13 files) and then I'm done.

I played both A1 and A2 but I prefer A1 more...Sadly there's no too much ships or mods for A1...That's why I'm trying to make my mod for A1 where all ships from ST franchise (canon ships and ships from ST games) will be included...It's tough mission and I lack time for this but eventually I'll finish it... Right now I'm converting A2 ships in A1...
