• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Well, as the title suggest, I'm looking for people that use Windows Vista and still play STA2. I don't know if I should turn this into a poll or not. But if you do use Vista perhaps you can explain how you made it work. By making it work, I mean the whole game. My problem is with the Multiplayer mode. I use Vista and my brother uses XP.

Incarnations mean Home edition, Office edition, Professional edition, etc.
Earlier version of Microsoft Windows mean 3.1, 2.11, 1.02, etc.
OS means Operating System.

I'm currently running Windows XP, Home Edition, with Service Pack 2 Installed. This should hopefully only be for another month or two though, as come the end of May, I'm buying a new computer, of which will hopefully be Vista Home Premium.

Well...a member here at MSFC suggested I go to A2Files and download the patch 1.2.5...and I gotta say it worked great! I'm able to play MP on Vista with my brother on XP and most of all I did NOT have to install the patch on my brother's copy. This patched worked on a unaltered version of A2. I do not know how this patch would work on a moddified version. Can somebody try to find out. Maybe Majestic and Syf can implment this patch into YY so I'll be able to play against everybody using my only computer...Vista!!!! I look foward to finding out what everyone thinks and finds out.

I use XP Home Service Pack 2, soon to be 3. I can't stand Vista, my major problem is so much isn't backward compatable, I understand why Microsoft did it (to make people buy their new projrams and what not hence maing more money) but as someone heavily into computers it was an extremely bad move and until that is retified in Windows 7 that is now being produced I will be sticking with XP.

This patched worked on a unaltered version of A2. I do not know how this patch would work on a moddified version.

It's designed to work with all versions (modified or not) or so I am told, but doesn't work for everyone. It has been known to really screw some peoples computers in the rare case and just not work for others.

Maybe Majestic and Syf can implment this patch into YY so I'll be able to play against everybody using my only computer...Vista!!!!

You could always ask us or check out the YY section. ;)

We are including it as an option and only due to allowing Vista users to use it and to use the restrict build code for the player. It's completely optional for users to install or not and the added code doesn't effect the game if the patch isn't installed, I actually tried it. It wont effect the AI at all as we plan the AI to only build a certain amount of ships and once they are destroy it will attempt to replace them the patch is more to stop the users building 30 Excelsiors instead of only half a dozen or so.

I currently use Windows XP Pro w/SP3

I will say I am getting a laptop soon, and I suspect it will have either Vista, or XP Pro on it. There really would be no point to use Win98.... and WinME would NOT ever happen, even if it was the most up-to-date and capable Windows yet.

Anything older than Win98, and you can't play Armada 2 anyways.

I got Vista with my latest laptop and PC, and the first thing I did (after a couple of days giving it a try), was to get rid of Vista and put XP on them.

Seriously, Vista is rubbish. Waste of money.

Wiser words have never been spoken, I will refuse to buy a PC if it has Vista on it and I have actually never heard a good word about it the best I heard of it is that it's okay.

It's a reason Windows 7 is now already in production to replace Vista.

I am using Vista for a full year now and although it had a rough start the release of SP1 fixed almost everything and by now I'm very glad I got it as it implimented some very useful new features. So, since my experience shows this is actually true, those bashing Vista so hard should first check they didn't accidently miss its system requirements, it's logical you can't run everything smoothly when you're just barely at its minimum. Just as hint ;)

Do you know the website where we can download this so called "SP1"?

If you're running Windows Vista, you have to install all the Windows Updates that need to be made before you get shown that SP1 exists. Sooner or later these tiny little updates make way for one big update called Service Pack 1. But Microsoft does all that updating automatically now, so they can verify your build time after time and prevent piracy.

I've been running Windows Vista for the better part of a year now, at the same time modding and running A2 without any problems I didn't create for myself. The 1.2.5 FleetOps patch was one such problem. I don't know what it did to my old install but I got error reports instead of beautiful A2. And I don't intend to return to using it.

But you don't want to get me started on FleetOps. Let me instead say that Vista, in my case, has worked fairly well and while I'm by no means impressed with it, I am satisfied enough not to roll back the operating system. There's nothing so fancy about Vista, after all, that I couldn't do with a good build of XP. That was Microsoft's big mistake with Vista: don't sell the people something they don't need. We're not talking about a Win95 - Win98 style transition here. Anything Vista can do, XP can as well, possibly better.

:D

I will simply remind everyone, that my problem is with the Multiplayer online. Playing against my brother whom uses XP, and myself using Vista. When I try clicking one of the internet buttons, such as TCP/IP or Lan and whatever the otherone is called, the game goes from a full screen window to a normal size black screen and locks up, to the point where I have to open up my Windows Task manager and click on Armada 2 then right click, go to process, and close process thus FORCING it to close. When I get this normal size black screen no amount of clicking the "X" button or right clicking closes the program..................:x :cry2: :help:  :(
