"Star Wars Show To Run Long?

George Lucas' longtime producing partner Rick McCallum told the BBC that a proposed Star Wars TV series will run for at least 100 episodes.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, McCallum said the show's writing team would soon be meeting to start on the project, which would begin filming in 2008 and be ready the same year. "Hopefully, if we can make it work and everybody's excited and watches it, we will keep on going," McCallum told the BBC.

The series will be set between Episode III and IV of the film saga and will cover the 20 years in the life of Luke Skywalker growing up. McCallum said there would be "a whole bunch of new characters" and the series would be "much more dramatic and darker." He added that it was unlikely any of the stars of the movies would be involved in the TV series.

A typical prime-time network TV show airs about 22 episodes in a season. "
When I first heard about it I thought it meant that 100 episodes is
what they intended to make overall not all for one season.

Very interesting I knew about the series and when it was set but not the amount of episodes they were intending on making.

Damn, I was hoping for a Knights of the Old Republic Miniseries

That would be a good idea for a new set of Star Wars movies without damaging the Star Wars name with sequal movies. Blindeye, your a genious. :D

I just got done reading a quick interview with Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet over at Movieweb.com and noticed one new bit of information I had not heard until today. Steve mentions the live action TV series as "targeted more towards the end of the decade". Up to this point I was under the impression we'd see the animated series in late 2007 and the live action series near the end of 2008. I guess things have taken a different track for this new television project over at Lucasfilm. Here's a quick snippet from Movieweb.com:

"Speaking of the future, you said the Star Wars TV show is years away...

Steve Sansweet: We're doing it in two phases. The first is Star Wars animation, which is CG 3-dimensional animation, like a Toy Story, that takes place during the period of the Clone Wars that takes place between Episodes 2 and 3. And that we're setting for Fall of 2007. Preproduction is underway, we're doing animation test, people are working on initial scripts. So we're well under way on that. And George is very much taking hand and is very much part of the whole process. I know some people thought maybe he would just hey "hey, go do it," but George is Star Wars and he's always gonna be very closely involved in this.

The other project is live action, and the live action is going to take place between Episode 3 and Episode 4. We're looking at a 1 hour show and [Producer] Rick McCallum has said the ideal would be to come up with 100 hours to really get into the story line and characters, and that's the direction we're going in. So that is really targeted more towards the end of the decade."

So there you have it. A little dissapointing if true but think about it this way, I'd rather have them take a longer time and create a masterpiece rather than them just crank out crap with the Star Wars brand on it!

Interesting I only thought they were making the second one, though it is going to take longer than I thought I am still looking forward to seeing what they spit out. :)

Well, having grown up on Star Wars, I'm watching this one closely. The latest is as follows:
According to George Lucas at Celebration III, in the series, "a lot of the issues from the films are connected, but you won't necessarily see a lot of the people that are connected." McCallum says on the writing and plot of the series: "We are just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out which direction to go to. He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between Episode III and Episode IV with a lot of characters that we haven't met that have been developed in some of the novels and other things. We are really excited about that. Finally, we could have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series." Regarding the series, he says: "It is going to be much darker, grittier. It's much more character-based." The show is still in its early planning stages, so many plot and/or story elements may change, as Lucas has been shown to change his mind easily, such as expressing an interest in expanding the character Aayla Secura, then killing her in Episode III.

In a recent interview, when asked about the show, McCallum replied, "Think about bounty hunter, that’s all I can tell you."

In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine, Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, declared himself Emperor and transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire. In the process, he ordered the execution of Order 66, in which all members of the clone army of the Republic turned on their Jedi leaders and killed them. In a speech he delivered to the Senate, however, he reported that there were remaining Jedi, and that these survivors would be "hunted down and defeated".

The series is set between 19 BBY and 0 BBY, referred to as "the dark times" by Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope. It is during this period that the newly formed Galactic Empire will rise to ultimate power throughout the galaxy. It is during this time period that the first Death Star will be constructed, albeit with many problems along the way.

However, most of the stories will be told from the perspective of minor characters from the Star Wars galaxy. From George Lucas' own words, we may see the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett play a significant role in the series, with Daniel Logan reprising his role from Attack of the Clones. According to Lucas, several of the major characters from the films may have small appearances as well.

Over the course of the show, the fledgling Rebel Alliance will gradually form into a full resistance against the Empire. The Alliance, with its loyalist intentions to restore the Old Republic, will ultimately win its first battle against the Empire, setting up the events for A New Hope. Per the opening crawl of A New Hope, only one major Rebel victory can occur in the series. However, it is possible that the Rebels may achieve minor victories or even suffer defeats before that.

Recent Star Wars productions have revealed all that is known at this point about the period the series will take place in:

The Evasive Action: Prey webstrips reveal that an unknown number of Jedi escape Order 66 for any number of reasons (not actively involved in the war, 'conscientious objectors', semi-rogue, skill, luck, etc.), and are hunted for a time by Darth Vader. At some point, Vader is told to focus on helping Palpatine build the Empire, and less on remaining Jedi, leaving that to others.
Yoda is in self-imposed exile on Dagobah, while Obi-Wan becomes a hermit on Tatooine after taking baby Luke to live with Owen and Beru Lars. The Last of the Jedi: The Desperate Mission reveals that Obi-Wan resides there until contacted about Anakin's one time rival, Ferus Olin. He then goes on one final adventure off-planet before returning to Tatooine. He may have some further planetbound adventures, but otherwise mostly watches over Luke, from a distance.
A.C. Crispin has stated that she proposed a book series dealing with Princess Leia Organa between Episode III and IV, but that "Lucasfilm didn't approve the idea of a Leia backstory because they want to keep that era of the SW continuity untouched for the television series they're considering."

When you watch ROTS and Anakin is in the room with the young padawans it cuts away after he draws his lightsabre

He might not have killed them! these could be the Jedi Palpatine is reffering to in the movie to be hunted down and explain why he felt the need to train Mara Jade incase Vader turned on him.
But then again he orders his troops to set a false distress call to return to the Jedi temple. I guess he wouldnt do that if he knew he didnt have all the Jedi covered for 1 massacre.
plus im sure in a new hope Obi Wan staes to luke that Vader helped hunt down the remaining Jedi Knights.

Im sure whatever they do it will be good, the 6 films were great.

If they go with the scenario of Luke's upbringing then I hope they show a Beggars Canyon Race or possably Pod Racing.

Just saw the latest from Lucas on the subject of a live action show.
May 25, 2011
Last year, George Lucas said the long-discussed Star Wars Live-Action series was on hold, stating that the difficulty was in making the series for a reasonable price. This week, in a new interview with Attack of the Show, Lucas was asked about the status of the series, and replied, "It sits on the shelf. We have 50 hours [written], and we're just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies – a different technology that we can use that will make it economically feasible to shoot the show. Right now, it looks like the Star Wars features, but we have to figure out a way of making it for about a tenth the cost of the features, because it's television. And we're working toward that and we're continuing to work toward that and we will get there at some point."

It's not clear what Lucas is referring to when he talks about a "different way of making movies" exactly – new, affordable special FX techniques? More realistic digital sets? But the Star Wars creator does go on to say, "It's just a very difficult process and obviously, when we do sort of figure this problem out, it will dramatically affect a lot of movies, because a lot of movies, features now, that are costing 150, 200 million dollars, we'll suddenly be able to make them for 50 or 60 million dollars."

I do hope he eventually gets it started, I would personally love to see the Force Unleashed characters as one of the main focuses of the series.

Thanks for updating us Avon. :)

I don't think that there will be any TFU characters in the series. Rumors say that it will be about the young Boba Fett.

I very much dislike TFU by the way. OK, gameplay was awesome, but it made a huge mess with the timeline. Forming of the Rebellion for example. Or taking the rebels to the Death Star - who then DO NOT start to alarm the whole Senate that Palpatine builds something really BIIIIIIIG... And Leia tried to defend herself in Ep. IV. That she's a diplomat and a senator while she was already standing before Palpatine on a trial. Same to Organa asnd the others...
And I don't like how the series treated Vader. C'mon! Beating the sh** out of him? Twice?! The strongest Force-user in the galaxy?! At the end of TFU he shouldn't have remain alive as Starkiller destroyed his helmet and his his breathing system - according to the textures of Vader's damaged suit.

Obviously things would have to be changed to work for a series or movie. As something for a game doesn't always work for a book or movie and vise versa.

The problem is that everything what is officially licensed and has a history, has to fit into the Star Wars Saga. KotOR I-II, Jedi Academy, Rebel Assault, TFU1-2 are all part of the big story.

By the way, I've read somewhere that the main problem is that Lucas wants to give the same experience as they did in the movies. Many special effects, CGI, aliens, incredible duels, dogfights etc. And these cost too much money. AFAIK on the Skywalker Ranch they are currently working on cheaper CGI techniques - that's where they could spare the mot money.
But unfortunately this will take some time :(

I hope that they'll make at least another animated series until then.

Yes, they still have a lot of more to cover in the Clone Wars I fell. Even though I am only up to season 2 I still think they have much more to do as the movies only covered the start and finish of the conflict.

But I do agree that I hope they do something while they wait for some more cost effective CGI work. :)

100 episodes about the growing life of Luke Skywalker ? You're kidding.

I would prefer to see 100 episodes from the love life of Han Solo and Leia Organa.
