A major goal since the inception of Sigma has been the inclusion of NPC Factions, Wildlife, and all sorts of doodads to color up maps. Space certainly is big, but these races don't fight in the void of deep space. Tons of celestial terrain and creatures inhabit the battlefield and bring life to all the maps.
There are quite a few NPC factions in Sigma, with plenty more to come down the road when there's time to work on them. Generally NPC races are organized to some degree and have a means of either manufacturing a "base" and a fleet of some sort. Some NPC factions are civilized races like the Jevorons, while others are simply wild creatures that have organized themselves into some semblance of a fighting force.

Jevoron (Jeh-voh-rahn)
Racial type: Mammalian
Homeworld: Unnamed (referred to as Jevoron Prime by the V.R.A.)
Faction Color: White
Overview: The Jevorons themselves are a mammalian race characterized by four large arms and blue skin. They breathe in xenon gas to respire, which more or less explains why their skin is tinted blue and has become remarkably soft to the touch. Because xenon gas is inefficient from a biological standpoint compared to gases such as oxygen, the Jevorons also absorb any heat around them to fuel their bodies. As such they cannot survive sub zero temperatures and standing in radius of a Jevoron can give a sensation of remarkable coldness. Studies show that their genetic structure is remarkably similar to that of Horovinians, implying that they either shared a common ancestor or evolved in remarkably similar conditions. The small difference in genetic makeup however has left the Jevorons a completely separate species with a different evolutionary path and despite their similar genetic structures, Horovinians and Jevorons cannot cross breed naturally.
History: The Jevorons were the first race encountered by the V.R.A. and were integral in defining the course of the Horovinians. At first the Horovinians established embassies on the Jevoron Homeworld and attempted to learn from and coexist with their race. One day however, every V.R.A. member was ordered to evacuate Jevoron Prime. Several weeks later, the V.R.A. bombed their homeworld into extinction without cause. Ever since then the V.R.A. has adopted a xenophobic creed.
Technology: The Jevorons have primitive technology and know nothing about Folded Space or any other means of FTL. They've only managed to spread through their home star system, and have a small police force of ships that could be considered a military.
When do they show up? The Jevorons are considered the antagonists during the prologue campaign and will make their appearance during that segment. Because they are virtually destroyed by the end of the prologue, they most likely will not show up after that.
Arkoid (Ar-koid)
Racial type: Bacteria
Homeworld: None (space-born)
Faction Color: Orange
Overview: Arkoids are generally classified as hyper-evolved bacteria. Their physical structures are rather simple and consist of a mostly mineral cell walls and packets of orange bio-luminescent gas sacks. It is still debated whether or not the Arkoids are multi-cellular though no studies have shown any sign of individual cell make-up. Arkoid sizes vary between individuals due to their odd DNA structures, though they are generally 150 meters in length. The Arkoids lack sentience, though they are socially organized to a degree. Often Arkoids will gather in massive clusters while they reproduce and feed off of numerous substances. Generally there are several active reproductives while younger Arkoids perform defensive duty. In the occasion that Arkoids sense a hostile threat, they will often gather in poorly coordinated swarms and blindly charge at their target.
History: The Arkoids have a notorious history of spreading into civilized areas, reproducing at an extraordinary rate, and then attacking everything in the area, including those of their own kind. Generally if an Arkoid is found in any given area then military forces are usually sent to exterminate them before their population reaches into the thousands.
Technology: The Arkoids have no known technological capability. They simply bash themselves into targets, or fire biological projectiles
When do they show up? The Arkoids will make an appearance in the campaign, and can also be found on some multiplayer maps and may randomly appear on any map if NPC options are set. They will proceed to reproduce rapidly and swarm everyone on the map. Even in large numbers they can barely scratch ships, though if they are not dealt with their population will eventually grow into the hundreds.
Jesmissic (Jes-mis-ik)
Racial type: Unknown
Homeworld: Unknown
Faction Color: Sky Blue
Overview: Virtually nothing is known of Jesmissic physiology as none of the other races have seen what a true Jesmissic looks like.
History: The Jesmissic are a mysterious race that may or may not be indigenous to the Sintar Cluster. The Jesmissic appear to operate under some form of unified political system, though what form it takes is unknown. The Jesmissic seem to be lacking in some technological areas such as weaponry, however they have mastered disciplines such as gravity manipulation. They often experiment with quantum singularities and a Jesmissic base of operations is almost always stationed in a safe orbit around a solar body. The Jesmissic are also infamous for their liberal use of fighter craft, and appear to lack larger vessels. Their race as a whole has not bothered to make contact with other races, although there are rumors that the Sov have managed to communicate and barter with them.
Technology: The Jesmissic are technologically competent, though they lack developments in some areas and are superior in others. On one hand they have poor propulsion systems and primitive energy based weapons. On the other hand they are masters of gravity manipulation, folding, and compressing of space. This technology has led them to create stable black holes for several moments at a time, and it is believed that they will eventually be able to create and control larger stable quantum singularities in the future.
When do they show up? The Jesmissic will make several appearances in the campaign, and if options are set they can potentially appear on any multiplayer map. They will generally establish an outpost in the sector and keep to themselves.
Hoggers (Hog-urs)
Racial type: Fungi
Homeworld: None (space-born)
Faction Color: Pink
Overview: Hoggers or 'Hogs' for short are a nickname given to a space-born life form native to the Sintar Cluster by the V.R.A. Hogs are simple multicellular beings that exhibit characteristics of most celestial fungi. They lack true cell walls and as such their organic mass is delicate and prone to being injured easily. Most Hogs are roughly 300 meters in length, have purple or pink flesh, and are characterized by several large vacuole sacks and two or more drifting tentacles. Large members of the species can reach a size of 1000 meters and display massive bloated vacuoles for storing materials as well as creating spores; the main method of Hog reproduction. There's some evidence that suggests the Hogs might be a distant cousin of the Ekoset and that they might have shared a common ancestor.
History: Hogs are docile, primitive, and seem to lack sentience. They are extremely passive and seem to be unaware of anything in their current environment, including other predators. Most often they gather in massive convoys and scour space for anything they can consume. This behavior implies that they are organized to some degree, even if it's only instinctual rather then through intelligence. Their primary diets include substances created by corroding most unprocessed metals. As such they are often found 'hogging' resource sights and blocking mining ships from their duties, hence their nickname. For this reason Hogs are considered a massive pest despite their harmless nature.
Technology: The Hoggers have no known technological capabilities.
When do they appear? The Hoggers may potentially show up on any map where they will proceed to clog resources sights and make it very difficult to mine.
Xilthu (Zil-thoo)
Racial type: Silicon
Homeworld: None (space-born)
Faction Color: Acid Green
Overview: The Xilthu are space-born entities that bare a resemblance to both living and non-living matter that are native to the Sintar Cluster. Xilthu are composed of mostly mineral and other non-biological substances, and as such are usually classified as non-living and in some cases as a virus. They are always bright green in color and come in a variety of geometric shapes ranging from simple polygons to dodecahedrons. There seems to be no form of organ system in a Xilthu, though its crystalline core is able to build up and discharge a powerful beam of light. Xilthu are capable of limited procreation through simple fission.
History: While the Xilthu technically could be considered non-living, their behavior suggests that they have some semblance of intelligence. They are able to gather in formations and attack virtually anything that moves, retreating if enough of their group has been destroyed/killed. Some suggest that like a virus they have built in behavior patterns and are simply acting on them to the best of their ability. Some xenobiologists have even suggested that the Xilthu may be artificial in origin because of their specific and almost mechanically predictable behavior. However, as one has never been taken intact/alive, little is truly known about their origins.
Technology: The Xilthu have no known technological capability, though they are able to build up and discharge beams of energy inside their mineral cores.
When do they show up? The Xilthu could potentially appear on any map and proceed to expand and attempt to destroy everything in sight.
V.R.A. Fox Division
Fox Division
Racial type: Mammalian
Homeworld: Classified
Faction Color: Sienna
Overview: The Fox Division is an elite sect of the V.R.A, one that operates almost autonomously and above the law. Everyone knows of their existence, but no one knows anything about them. They serve as an intelligence gathering agency, spies against other races, and a vigilante police force. In the mind of those in charge of Fox Division there are none above them in rank, none in the V.R.A. or otherwise.
History: The Fox Division was shortly established after the destruction of the Jevoron Homeworld in an attempt to form an organization capable of gathering information on extra terrestrial species. Over the years however Fox Division's power grew and they now operate and maintain their own fleet with their own ship designs. Under any circumstances a Fox Division commander can take control of any V.R.A. force without question or permission at all: none in the V.R.A. dare speak against the secretive organization. Propaganda often portrays the Fox Division as the reason the V.R.A. is intact, eliminated alien threats before they even arrive on V.R.A. borders.
Technology: In addition to having access to every V.R.A. ship, Fox division deploys ships that use experimental technology and powerful weapons. Most innovations are field tested on Fox Division ships before being applied to V.R.A. military as a whole.
When do they show up? The Fox Division mostly appear in the campaign. There will be instances where you will get the chance to control their unique ships (in reality they are controlling you), and there will be instances where you will have to fight against them.
There are more NPC factions that will show up, so stay tuned for more.
