For those of you who don't know, The Elder Scrolls Online was announced yesterday. It will take place 1000 years before TESV: Skyrim, placing it at around year 600 of the Second Era, placing it shortly after a failed Akaviri invasion of Morrowind. The story will revolve around Molag Bal, Daedric Prince of Domination, trying to pull Tamriel into his plane of Oblivion and, judging by the trailer, the Empire currently has no leader and is likely falling apart.
There will be three major alliances. The first will be the Altmer (High Elves), Bosmer (Wood Elves), and Khajiit (cat people). The second will be the Redguards (humans from Hammerfell), Orsimer (Orcs), and Bretons (humans with elvish ancestry). The third will be the Nords (humans from Skyrim), Dunmer (Dark Elves), and Argonians (lizard people). There is no mention of the Imperials (humans from Cyrodiil), so I assume they are on their own.
The entire continent of Tamriel will be available to explore. There hasn't been any mention of what the gameplay is like so it is unknown whether it will use the series' usual "level/learn skills as you use them" system, a more standard "level/feat" system or something else entirely.
The game is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios rather than Bethesda Softworks. Hopefully, this means it won't eat up the usual Elder Scrolls games the way that World of Warcraft delayed development of the other Blizzard game lines for several years.
