• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

I've been working toward the "one win with every civ" milestone recently. It's been tough because I started getting into mods - there are some really good ones out there - and I keep wanting to play those instead of the vanilla Civs.

Has anybody tried the scenarios yet? I tried getting into those, but have failed to win any (apart from the Steampunk scenario) so far.

EDIT: I should have mentioned I'm playing Civ 5 - I don't think any of us have the new version yet.

I looked at a few of the scenarios in 5, but they didn't sound as interesting to me as 4's scenarios. I should check them out again after my current Germany run.

I haven't play 5 in probably over a year. I may have to get back into it and refresh my memory. I never tried any of the scenarios. I remember looking up each leader and looking through strats and such.

Always loved when a great game came together and things fell in line for you. And the frustration of a bad start and another civ who just ran away with everything.

I haven't played IV, but I can totally see that. The worst IMHO are probably the purely tactical scenarios - I do enjoy some combat in my games, but it's just not as much fun on it's own. Also, I personally think that 100 turns is a bit short for a decent game.

And now for something completely different. For most of my time playing Civ, I've played tall. Even back in III, when tall wasn't really a thing, I usually stuck to a smaller core of cities. So recently I sat down and tried out some wide gameplay. It took me a bit to get how it works, and apparently it was easier before BNW, but it's still very much an option and can actually really be worth it. I thought I'd ask around and see what your favorite play styles are. ;)

I generally go wide. I really like not having to rely on trade to get my luxuries and strategic resources. Managing happiness gets much harder as you increase difficulty, though. I've gone tall, too, which seems to be great for science. Tall Babylon researches all the things. I've also done a mix where I dip into both Tradition and Liberty to have a core set of cities that do the heavy lifting along with a set of outer cities that primarily secure resources and provide a fortified buffer between my core and my neighbors. Not sure if that's effective against human players, though. Works best if you're playing a civ with an early culture bonus of some sort.

Since Civ 3, I tend to go for around 7-8 cities. Probably has to do with me micromanaging everything possible, and more cities than that gets tedious to micro.. I'm not sure whether 7-8 can be considered wide or tall, or a decent strategy for that matter, but it is effective enough at pushing out science and production. I used to play on epic speed, so things took forever, but this way having a few wars made sense. On faster speeds, by the time you set up your attack, I already have upgrades lined up..

I really liked pushing out culture in Civ3 (or 4, can't recall) to push out my borders and "steal" land and cities from neighbours. I think the latest Civ doesn't let you do this.

Typically, if I can stave off aggressive Civs via diplomacy, then I'll turn into a good game. Maintaining a large army just never made sense to me, especially when upgrading costs are so high.

I've tried Civ 6, and really liking the direction this iteration is taking. Don't want to buy it at the moment cause I know I'll get sucked into it for many days, and the price is a bit steep here in the North.. Instead, I've been watching some Civ6 game streams from quill18 on youtube. Surprisingly fun to watch.

3 and 4 both let you do that, but 5 doesn't. 5 does have culture flipping of cities, but it's a late game feature and is difficult to pull off, largely relying on the other civ's unhappiness.

Woah!! A dedicated Civ thread! How did I miss this lol!!! I've been massively back into classic Civ games over the last 3 years now.

Been super busy over at CivFinatics rescuing long lost Civ3 total conversion scenarios/mods and getting them better more permanent hosting etc. Been hunting for lots of cool scenarios to include in classic Civ mods video series I'm doing.

I've also been playing and doing a lot of my own modding of Civ2 making total conversion scenarios that really push the limits of the old engine.

For Civ2 I'm currently working on a Heroes of Might & Magic 2 scenario, a Command & Conquer scenario, a Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario, and a Master of Magic scenario.

Would it be a appropriate to post some of my Moddb dev diaries for these mod projects here or in a separate thread? I know this place is pretty sensitive about offsite links and self promotion so I don't wanna get in any trouble lol!

Sorry for not seeing this earlier. As far as I'm concerned, moddb is totally fine.

Thanks Terra. All good mate.

Decided to make a separate thread to talk about my moddb projects as there's some non-Civ Star Trek stuff I thought I'd mention too:
http://www.msfc.com.au/community/in...aster-of-magic-mods-for-civilization-ii.6306/

But yeah like I said above I'm currently working on a Heroes of Might & Magic 2 scenario, a Command & Conquer scenario, and a Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario all for good old Civilization 2. I'm also working on Master of Magic Enhanced scenario for Civilization 2 Test of Time. Hell I'm even mucking around with some Civilization 3 mod stuff.. all 20 years too late haha.
