I am... hopeful. Saw the trailers which have focused on the individual characters and so far I've liked what I've seen (with the possible exception of the security chief... but we'll see).
It helps in a TV show when the characters actually have personality and are likeable. I watched part of a film recently about two women trapped in a shark cage - I turned off after I realised I was rooting for the shark .

I'm not going to hold my breath! I'm sure they can screw up Strange New Worlds just like they have with everything else they have touched the last few years!

"I turned off after I realized I was rooting for the shark." Don't be a quitter kjc733. Wasn't the shark likeable? You may have missed out on a happy ending and a full shark. :lol2:

Well thats good to hear. I haven't seen LD. After 3 or 4 episodes of the disaster they call discovery I just quit watching. The reviews for picard were worse so i didnt even bother. But maybe there is still hope. Until then I'll keep rooting for the shark!

Let's agree to disagree on that one.

Strange New Worlds appears on the surface to be better than the current shows but, given that this is not its own universe and pigeonholed into being the Prime Universe, let's see how much it's going to mess with canon more than it already has. Already cringing at the forced descendant of Khan being a part of the crew.

I'm more hopeful on SNW. Initial reviews coming out are quite positive about the episodic nature and how different the feel of this one is from DSC and Picard. I agree with Cabal on Lower Decks, and it's been good to see a few reviews make the comparison between these two in terms of preserving the feel of an actual Trek show.

I never finished Season 3 of DSC, and I haven't bothered with the newest. Similarly, I have not yet seen any of the new season of Picard. That being said, I like the look of the new Stargazer and I'm happy some decent new ship designs got in as a result.

I won't lie, I found that season 4 of DSC was the best. It had the most Trek feel of all the seasons thus far.

I love Lower Decks and Prodigy. Best part of Prodigy is that my youngest daughter loves it so it gives me a Trek to watch with my child, like I watched with my dad.

I am ok at best with Picard. Don't hate it but don't love it either.

I am cautiously hopeful for SNW. I like the direction so far. Agree about the idea of a Khan descendant being on board. Not sure how that'll play out in the long run.

Do yourself a favour, this is a life lesson, ignore critics and reviews, try it and make your own mind up. Movies like John Carter and Battleship were awesome but because of shithead numb brain dead critics it flopped. Critics are the third worse thing to come from evolution after Politicians and modern crazies. :lol2:

I found Picard lacking especially season 1 and season 2 got boring but that's just me. I found STD okay going season 3 and onwards. I wouldn't pay for it, getting it free on Netflix over here, but still, I ignored critics and gave it a go. I doubt I'll ever re-watch either series, preferring to go back to Voyager and other classic Treks.

Critics are not the third worse thing. They fall into the same class as the other two: Modern crazy, shithead, numb skull, brain dead, noodle nut, total clueless, etc., etc., etc., I would go on but it would fill the hole page, etc., etc., IDIOTS!!!! :lol2:

I won't pay to watch any of them either!

I have seen the first three episodes and so far it's fantastic. Has anyone else?

I am watching as well. The episodes so far are fantastic. Truely reminds me of what Trek once was.
Watching as well, and loving it!

From the preview for this week's episode, looks like we'll be getting our first look at new Gorn ships!

I've watched SNW's first three episodes and I find I'm really liking it as well.

Pike FTW, Una is a solid XO, La'an will take some growth and getting used to, Uhura is as I'd imagine her as a cadet, Spock is Spock, Hemmer is a unique CHENG, and M'benga and Chapel bring some life and flavor to sickbay.

About the only thing I've had an issue with thus far is how contrived it is that M'benga is keeping his daughter in the medbay transporter. That does NOT seem like something you do on the flagship and was way out of left field. Don't get me wrong, seeing him being a father to his daughter and reading to her was a perfectly good scene, it's the HOW that I have an issue with.

Definitely looking forward to the next episodes as it continues.

The Gorn ships are very unique. I'll need to get screengrabs for later.

Asymmetrical, unique movement and communication patterns. Very different from the old SFB/SFC designs. I kind of like it.

I must say, the writers are doing some very impressive work, finding ways to flex the canon or peep into the future without actually breaking canon. I like that the Romulans got some new battle birdies...though I call them battle chickens since they're a bit ugly.

The main drawback with how the episode ended is now we'll have two seasons starting with trials/defense of a comrade, with Captain Freeman in Lower Decks facing something too.

Really like how they show the different commands types played out between Kirk and Pike and how it changed the whole event and it's outcome. And that some time you just have to fight and brawl it out

I'd be fascinated to see a side-by-side of a lot of the scenes in this episode. I'm not sure, but I think even some of the explosion effects were made to look as close to the original episode as possible. If true, that'd be a great bit of attention to detail

One thing I didn't like.. was making Ortegas into Stiles.. like, yeah shes an ornery type of character.. but they made her into an outright racist against Spock. Plus she has no on screen history with the Romulans and didn't even acknowledge whether she had family that fought in the Romulan War the first time. Wouldve been much better to keep her at Sulu's station and recast Stiles just for this episode. Also ironic that its the girl (Angline Martine in the original series) as opposed to Tomlinson who dies in the battle instead.

I'd forgotten about that reversal.

Honestly Ortega has next to zero characterization as-is, so seeing a possible future for her was interesting. The writers may try to go that route in the future, or might change some things around.
